Writing Task
In this poem, the narrator praises the courageous
soldiers. Do you think the narrator is supporting war?
Give reasons for your answer.
In the poem, the narrator describes the loyal and
disciplined action of the brave soldiers in the Light
Brigade. The six hundred men obeyed their leaders
command to charge into a valley to attack the enemy
even though they all knew it was a mistake. Such
courage deserves praise and that is what the narrator
does in the poem. This does not mean that the narrator
is supporting war. In fact, by describing the battle so
vividly, how guns volleyed and thundered the narrator
makes us view the war with horror and disgust.
Furthermore, the narrator points out unnecessary loss
of many soldiers lives due to careless command. This
strengthens the idea that war is unnecessary and
horrifying.

2. Explain the value of patriotism as shown in the poem

The charge of the Light Brigade
In the poem, six hundred soldiers were told to charge
forward to capture the enemys cannons. They obeyed
the command even though they knew their leader had
made a careless mistake. They just carried out their
duty as soldiers and that was to fight for their country.
They demonstrated the value of patriotism when they
carried out their duty, even to the point of death.

What is the most important moral lesson you can learn

from the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade
The most important moral lesson I can learn from this
poem is courage. In the poem, the 600 hundred soldiers
demonstrated amazing courage when they obeyed
their leader to charge into the enemy knowing they
would very likely die. They did it because it was their
duty to carry out their leaders orders. The poem tells
me that doing the right thing sometimes needs
tremendous courage. Therefore, if I am faced with a
challenging situation that requires me to act
unselfishly, I hope to have the same kind of courage to
do what is right.
