WEB-BASED TEACHING FOR EFL LEARNERS

The Sudium Generale that held on Monday 4 April 2016 was interesting. It talked about WebBased Teaching for EFL Learners. There are some topics that for me is interesting and really
useful for English teacher. First, as teacher we should pay attention to evaluate website when
we are using web-based teaching because . We should notice these things: accuracy (we
should know who write the page, is he/she an expert in the subject, you may see the source,
check qualifications, experience, e.g. we can check the who is write the blog in about me
link), currency (is the content up to date? When was the page last updated?), content (is the
site interesting and stimulating? Consider the content from learners point of view) , and
functionally (does the site work well? Are the any broken links? Be sure to check all pages,
check how quickly it loads for learners, and check sound, video, and animation work).
Second, there are some programs, it kind of chatting with robot or called English
chatting. With those programs we can improve our writing and communicative skill. For
example when we use Hi Mike program (http://www.eslfast.com/robot/english_tutor.htm) ,
we can chat with him, and when we are wrong using grammar, he will correct us. So we
know our mistakes. But the weakness from this program, some information is not up-to-date.
Besides Mike, there is Elbot software (http://www.elbot.com/). The language that Elbot
use is more difficult than Mike program, so it can be used for advanced level.
Third, the speaker gave us information about visual dictionary or online graphical
dictionary (http://visuwords.com/). We can explore the lexicon. Whether we are native
English speaker or second language usereither as a student or a teacherbrowse the
language in ways we couldn't with traditional printed reference materials. With this Visual
dictionary, it can be used for learning vocabulary.
Fourth, there some online programs, that teacher can use to find source or inspiration
for teaching, there are ESL Mania (www.eslmania.com), Espresso English
(http://www.espressoenglish.net/), ESL Printables (www.eslprintables.com/), Busy Teacher
(http://busyteacher.org/), English Test Store (http://englishteststore.net/).
Mostly the material that Dr. Siti Yulidhar Harunasari, M.Pd. gave to us are really
similar and related materials in Media Language Learning. She gives us information about
the programs that we can use for teaching ELL. And it really related with the chapter 3.5
Listening Facilitative E-tools which the purpose is to improve ELLs comprehension skills.
The program is still the same as we talked during Media and Language Learning, it kind of
Podcast program, but the speaker gave us the up-to-date link podcast that can we download or
can be source. There are ESL POD (https://www.eslpod.com/website/) the strength from this
program there are many free podcast we can download and there also the scripts, EN Podcast
(https://www.enpodcast.com/) the strenght from EN Podcast there are levels, so we can
choose the podcast that proper to ELLs level, Elllo Podcast (http://www.elllo.org/), the
strength from Elllo, there are also video and games for ELL, and Grammar Sound
(http://www.soundgrammar.com/) with Grammar sound, we can also learn grammar besides
listening.
