My Hometown - Narvacan
Let me give you a brief overview of Narvacan's
history...

They once called our town a "Ghost town" for it is

where corpses and dead bodies were thrown.
Narvacan had this eerie impression to people in time
of Marcos' administration until such time they already
used to it and people living here were no longer
affected with whatever they describe our little town.

Until, a person was elected and became the mayor of

the town. Everything has changed. Honorable Mayor
Edgardo D. Zaragoza has proven to everyone that
what they think about Narvacan was all wrong.

He did everything to change the image of our town.

And until now, Narvacan seize to continue this
changes and becoming more progressive as time
passes. Narvacaneos were thankful and proud of their
municipal mayor for improving our town making it
peaceful and solemn unlike before.

In terms of geographic history, Narvacan was

discovered by Spanish forces under the supervision of
the navigator Capt. Juan de Salcedo. Narvacan was
derived from the word "Nalbakan" which was uttered
by a native when asked what was the name of their
place. The group speculated it was the name of the
place when actually what the native leader meant was
to ask them if they were shipwrecked. From then on,
they called it "Narvacan".

Established in 1576, Narvacan was one of the towns

that has the first Roman Catholic parish in August 25,
1587. Most residents are Roman Catholic and as
years passed, its population increases as they
established other religions and sects. Having 34
barangays, it is considered as one of the large towns

My Ilocos Vacation Tour
– Vigan, Laoag, Bangui
and Pagudpud
Just recently, I went on a road trip vacation to
Ilocos. Me and three other friends drove all the
way from Manila to Vigan, Laoag, Bangui,
Pagudpud and back in a span of four days.
Our mission was to see the famous places in
Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte while experiencing
the joy of travelling on the road.
Our vacation rules were simple – see as much
tourist destinations as we can, eat only in local
restaurants and of course, enjoy our time together.
Armed only with internet research, hotel
brochures and some street smarts, we set out to see
Vigan, Laoag and Pagudpud. Our initial budget
was set at P10,000 per person which was inclusive
of everything from gasoline, food, accommodation
and others.
Personally, I thought this was too expensive but
was advised that this was a just conservative
estimate. At the end of the trip, I would find out
that this was indeed a very conservative budget.

can cover it. Don‟t ruin your vacation by running
out of money.
We left Manila very early morning on Thursday.
We drove a Toyota Revo AUV on a full tank
which was just enough to bring us to Vigan. If
you‟re planning to do the same, make sure you gas
up in Manila because the the price of gasoline is
more expensive as you drive further up north. We
had a few stops along the way, not just to rest and
eat but also to buy some snacks for the road.
Budget Travel Tip: Prepare snacks at home or
buy them at the grocery where it‟s cheaper. Bring
a cooler to keep your drinks cold. Snacks are
expensive in gas stations and bus stop overs.
We arrived in Vigan early evening. We didn‟t have
any hotel reservations so we went around to scout
for the best deal available. We decided to stay in
Villa Angela based upon the recommendation
from a friend. It‟s not the cheapest place to stay in
Vigan but it‟s also not the most expensive. Our

main reason for choosing the place was actually
the ambiance and the great customer service of the
staff.
The next day, we had our tour of Vigan, courtesy
of one of the Villa Angela staff, Kuya Tony. He
offered to take us around while giving us bits of
trivia about Vigan. We went to the Baluarte Open
Zoo, Hidden Garden, Padre Burgos Museum,
Bantay Church and many others. We also saw
Vigan‟s handloom weaving and pottery making
industries.
We were lucky to have a “free” tour guide. But in
any case, there‟s a Tourism office in Vigan where
you can get free brochures of the places you can
see and visit around town. The people of Vigan are
also friendly and will give you proper directions
when asked. Everybody seems to know how to
speak Tagalog and English so there‟s no language
barrier.

EXPERIENCE,
A TREAT FOR ALL YOUR SENSES
A trip to Paoay is visual and tactile indulgence.
It would entail a long drive from Manila to
Ilocos, good thing Florida Bus makes that trip
all worthwhile for its passengers. We left Manila
Sunday and arrived in Ilocos Monday morning.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the warm
smiles of the Ilocanos and were met by Mr.
James Galano, private secretary to Mayor
Bonifacio Clemente Jr. The gentleman was very
helpful and accommodating truly explaining
each beautiful feature of Paoay to us. We were
also met by Engr. Jose E. Cacayorin, the town‟s
tourism consultant. This man is very passionate
about tourism that he devoted a good amount of
his life in showcasing Paoay as a unique travel
experience and indeed it is a truly unique travel
experience. We first visited the hotel in front of
the municipal hall, Casa Dona Emilia and we
were given a delicious snack to revived up our
first photo shoot which the St. Augustine
Church.
Paoay is a 4th class municipality in Ilocos Norte
most famous for its church, Paoay Church or the
St. Augustine Church. The magnificent structure
has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage
site and is now undergoing restoration to
preserve its grandeur. Aside from its
architectural significance, Paoay Church, its bell
tower to be exact, has a very important role in
history as well. It became an observation post
for our Katipuneros during the revolutionary
years and later as an observation post during the
Japanese times. It has served as a fortress for our
countrymen and is still a fortress of culture,
history, and heritage for the Ilocanos. Paoay
Church is considered an earthquake Baroque
structure. Intricately integrated in its design are
corals, bricks, Oriental and Baroque inspired
ornaments. Paoay Church is just one of the
places to visit in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.
What is a trip to Paoay without tasting its
delicious delicacies? Across Paoay Church is
Herencia Café with a Paris inspired mural, but
reflecting on the graphics one can get a feel of
the true Paoay spirit. Herencia Café serves
Pinakbet Pizza. Yes, the pizza for every
vegetable lover. They wouldn‟t share the secret
to this tasty treasure but who cares once you
indulge on this treat you can‟t think of anything
else. They also have dinuguan pizza, although
dinuguan is not a native of Ilocos, the dinuguan
pizza is. Who would have thought this staple,
ulam, could become a tasty snack treat. Trust
Ilocanos to weave their magic in the kitchen and
tourists will be under the spell of their tasty
concoctions.
Malacañang of the North is also a noteworthy
place. This was built to house the former
President Ferdinand Marcos, who is a son of
Ilocos. This place is now a museum and a
reminder of the once lavish lifestyle of the
former President. The place is fronted by Paoay
Lake and could be a great spot for jet skiing and
water sports. It also has a golf course for anyone
who wants to indulge in this kind of sport. The

duress of time but it is being restored through
fees collected from visitors to constantly remind
us of the significance Paoay has placed in our
nation‟s history and culture.
Another Paoay magic, is the Nagbacalan
loomweavers. This handiwork is made by the
natives. They incorporated the colors of the
island to their work. They were inspired by the
lazy days of Paoay it has become a signature of
their creations. The Nagbacalan loomweavers is
fronting Paoay Lake and it has become a museo
for them. Countless foreign designers have
worked with the Nagbacalan loomweavers
because of their well crafted handiworks.
And if this is not enough visual treat, you can
also check out Culili Point, from a vantage view
it‟s almost like an Indian man over looking
China Sea. During summer, the place looks like
a desert, without a grass in sight, you‟d thought
you were somewhere in the Middle East. This
exciting sight has just been recently discover
proving Paoay has a lot of surprises to offer its
visitors.
It was a long day at Paoay but still our gracious
host Mr. James Galano, drove us to the bus
station for our next itinerary Pagudpud, showing
us the real Ilocano value of taking care of its
visitors.

Iloilo: The Haven Gateway in Western Visayas
Iloilo City is the economic center of the
Western Visayas Region in the Philippines and
is also the capital of Iloilo Province. It has a
busy international airport that connects the city
to major destinations in the country and the rest
of the world. The city's fish port complex is just
as busy with millions of kilograms of fish
shipped in and out yearly. Iloilo City also has a
strong banking industry with different sizes of
banks operating.
The place has enjoyed a growing economy
even before the Spanish came to colonize the
territory. It once had a strong textile industry
sometime in the 18th century. After that, the
city's sugar industry gained strength. Even after
World War II and its accompanying
devastation, Iloilo City was able to regain
economic strength at a moderate pace.
The weather here is pretty much the same with

Spanish and American colonial eras. Some of
these are Tigbauan Church, which was erected
in 1592, and San Joaquin Church.
Natural attractions here will become fascinating
havens for wandering souls. You may want to
visit the palm-fringed white sands of Sicogon
Island. There are several waterfalls that are
worth hunting for like the San Juan Falls, which
is a series of waterfalls surrounded by lush
foliage, that is just around six kilometers from
the town of Sara. Other natural attractions here
include Mount Napulac, Isla De Gigantes, and
Tinagong Dagat.
Yet another reason to visit Iloilo City are the
many wonderful festivals that are celebrated
year round. January nights are made bright in
blazing displays during the annual fireworks
contest. Colorful parades and street dancing are
major highlights during the city's Ati-atihan
Festival. If you would love to see bullfights
then come over to the Pasungay Festival in
January. Water buffaloes will make you eat
their dust as you watch the Carabao-Carroza
Race in May.
Where to Eat in Iloilo City
The people of Iloilo City are renowned for their
cooking. A very huge favorite among the many
delicacies here is the ever-famous La Paz
Batchoy. Restaurants in the city will most likely
have this in their menu. This dish will usually
cost around P50 to P60. The best of Filipino
delicacies are served in restaurants like Deco's
La Paz Batchoy, Afrique's Restaurant, and
Barrio Inasal.

There are some first class hotels in Iloilo City for
visitors to choose from. Some hotels of this class
are Hotel del Rio on M. H. Del Pilar Street,
which is only 10 minutes away from the
downtown area, Amigo Terrace Hotel at the
corner of Iznart and Delgado, and the Sarabia
Manor Hotel in 101 General Luna Street. Rates
for in these hotels start around P1,000 or about
$23 to $30.
If you prefer to stay in standard class and mid-
range hotels then you'll find a lot of those here in
Iloilo City. Some probable choices are Days

Hawaii-based Filipino Disc Jockey and
Broadcaster Israel Pacis Savellano shares what
he does best and what drives this passion.
HOW DID YOUR CAREER AS A DJ AND
BROADCASTER START?
Where do I start? It was unexpected. I called a
radio show to comment on the topic being aired.
During the conversation, the radio host, who
later became my mentor, offered me to be a part
of the broadcasting team. I said yes, and not long
after, I found myself hosting my own show
BALITOK BALLASIW TAAW. It was totally
far from my Business Management degree from
the Hawaii Pacific University.
CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR
SHOW?
I named the show BALITOK BALLASIW
TAAW which loosely translates to golden
inheritance. The title reminds me of the first
Filipino migrants who became farm workers.
Braving the uncertainty in a foreign land, they
endured the heat of the sun cultivating crops like
sugarcane and pineapple. The radio show was
formed as a gratitude to them who took the
golden opportunity and scattered the seeds of a
better life for their children. Nowadays, the fruit
of their initiative is evident, with more and more
Filipinos migrating into the United States. They
left a golden inheritance (balitok ballasiw taaw)
to Filipinos living around the world.
The radio show is basically informative as it
updates the listeners on the current trends and
events in the local and international scenes.
Another highlight is to enlighten the audience on
the rich culture, values and foundation of being a
Filipino.
It caters to a wide range of
listeners, including the
younger generations, to
help them appreciate their
Filipino roots. Of course,
the show will not be
complete without a dose of
dedications and song
requests, mostly
international songs and our
much loved pusong pinoy
music.
