Summer blooms glorious at the library in stunning fabric paintings by

Nelson artist Kate Bridger.
Five flower portraits are
delicately rendered, resulting in a surprisingly painterly take on petal, leaf, and
glass.
Kate has been a practicing fabric artist since the
early 1980s. Over the years
she has invented, refined
and experimented with
materials, subject matter, and techniques, allowing her
to portray landscapes, streetscapes, wildlife, abstracts,
architecture and a variety of subject matter in meticulous
detail.
Her summertime library exhibition, Kate says, is
inspired in part by the beautiful work of (Nelson florist)
Bellaflora' s talented owner and floral artist, Kyla. I began
working on a few ` everlasting' flower arrangements earlier
this year.
These paintings, titled Everlasting Arrangements #1 and
#2, are joined by fabric renditions of sunflowers, gerberas,
and a tipsy rose.
Kate creates each bloom individually, using carefully
chosen fabrics and stitch techniques in an effort to recreate the flowers' unique properties.
Fabric is a fabulous medium to work with because it
provides instant texture: it can be layered to create subtle
shading and depth, she says. Perhaps best of all, it is a
relatively unstable medium and its fickleness and unpredictability often lead me down paths I had not foreseen.
Kate' s work shows through July and August.

Christine Ann Seafoot (Johnson)

Christine Ann Seafoot (Johnson) age 65, of Kaslo, British Columbia,
died suddenly February 19, 2016. Her loving daughters Alysha
Vlahovich and Jessica Vlahovich, and four grandchildren, Garrett,
Taylor, Madigan and Kavan, survive her. She is also survived by her
brother Jay M. Johnson (Carol); sister Vivian T. Frear (Marshall); and
three nephews, Matthew, Clayton and Joseph. She was predeceased
by her husband Jiggs Seafoot in 2001, her father John M. Johnson in
2013 and mother Doris H. Johnson in 2001.
Christine was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and moved to Edison
with her family in her early youth. She attended Edison High School
and was valedictorian of her graduating class. Christine was awarded
a full scholarship and attended Washington University in St. Louis,
MO. She moved to Kaslo, British Columbia, Canada where she
raised her family and resided until her death. Chris was a thespian,
loved music and the arts, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, animals,
motorcycling and snowmobiling. She will be greatly missed by the
many friends who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday August 6, 2016, 1 pm
at the Legion in Kaslo, British Columbia.

of a young killer whale, an orca nicknamed Luna, who

Nelson Police Department Restorative Justice (NPDRJ)

is a community based program that facilitates dialogue
in the aftermath of crime and other harmful behaviour.
Our program seeks to empower participants to share their
experiences and to explore collaborative ways to repair
the harm. NPDRJ facilitators work to design a restorative
response that meets the needs of all participants by providing victims with the opportunity to express how the
incident has impacted them, helping offenders understand the impact of their actions and empowering them to
take responsibility for the harm caused. They create value
by strengthening mutual understanding to build consensus for a meaningful, reasonable, and fair resolution.
We are currently recruiting dedicated volunteers for the
position of a restorative justice facilitator. Because of the
seriousness and sensitive nature of the work we do, we are
very discerning about which applicants we select as volunteers for the program. We cannot guarantee that everyone
who applies will be accepted and we request your understanding if you are not selected to participate in the training.
