NAIDOC
NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander
Day Observance Committee) Week helps
celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander history, culture and achievements,
and recognise their contributions to our
community.
Many organisations, sporting groups,
schools and, especially, the Shire of East
Pilbara held educational, celebratory and
fun activities including an Elders morning
tea at the EPIS Centre, a disco at the Youth
Centre, Indigenous story time and craft at
the newly refurbished library, screening of
the movie Putuparri and the Rainmakers,
sports, music, food and more.
There were numerous volunteers and
sponsors for the various events which
enabled hundred to be involved with many
of the activities.

Say Cheese! Pioneers Annual Cheese and Wine Event

June 4th saw the Pioneers Football Club host

170 people from the Newman community
at their annual wine and cheese night. The
events casino theme was a hit, with ladies
and gents alike dressed up to the 9s in
suits and stilettos, trying their luck in poker,
roulette and the most popular game of the
night, two-up.
The wonderful wine selection, delicious
cheese platters and laughs flowed well past
midnight as the fantastic atmosphere and
party spirit took over the night.

This event is the Pioneers biggest social

event of the year and provides the club
with a valuable fundraising opportunity.
Being a not for profit association, events
like these help to sustain the operation of
the club by investing the proceeds towards
things such as general maintenance, buying
merchandise, and purchasing well needed
equipment.
The club also generously donated part
of their proceeds, a whopping $1000 to
Breast Cancer Research Australia.

Organising an event of this size is a

mammoth task to undertake and would
not have been possible without the
outstanding efforts of Marie Matthews
(Event co-ordinator), Liam Franklyn (Poker
and Two-up organiser), and Bec Avery
(Caterer).
A special thanks to the following
organisations that furthered the events
success by generously donating door prizes
which were won by some lucky punters Woolworths, Cellarbrations, Beauty on
Hilditch, Bliss Beauty, Newman Visitor

2016 regarding the State budget for 20162017, $49.7 million has been allocated
through the Royalties for Regions scheme
towards the Newman Health Service

The Shire of East Pilbara will be hosting its

biennial emergency exercise at Newman
Airport on 24 September and seeks up
to 150 volunteers to make the exercise
as realistic as possible. The emergency
scenario will remain undisclosed to ensure
realistic simulation. To voluntarily act
as a passenger, visitor or tourist, please

Rec Centre Now Open 24/7

Members of the Newman Recreation

Centre can now exercise at whatever
hours suit their schedule or motivation.
Increased CCTV coverage and installation
of duress alarms help make this possible.
To have access to the gym out of hours,
members must have had their induction,
a blood pressure assessment and sought
advice regarding safety measures and
procedures. Staff is available from 8am to
8pm on Monday to Friday and 8am to 12
noon on Saturdays. For those new to town,
the rec. centre is on the corner of Gregory

Turning 30

The Newman Day Care Centre opened

in 1986, and operates as a not-for-profit
centre offering long day care services to
children from eight weeks to six years.
The centre is managed by the parents and
community in the form of a Committee.
Its objectives are to recognise the
uniqueness of each child and value
their strengths, abilities and emerging
interests which are crucial to providing an
environment that will optimise childrens
learning. They encourage children to
actively participate in their own learning
through play.
Newman Day Care Centre is celebrating a
special anniversary this year. They turn 30!
To celebrate this momentous occasion,
they will be holding an open day on
Saturday 20 August (Fortescue Festival
weekend) between 9 am and 12 pm. The
entire community is welcome to attend.
There will be food and drinks as well as lots
of fun activities for the children including
a bouncy castle, face painting and craft
activities. Forms will be available for those
interested in enrolling their children.

Playgroup

Newmans Playgroup has been a recipient

of aroud $20,000 as part of the BHP Billiton
Community Grants Program.
This has enabled them to help offer
greater equipment and sensory learning
opportunities for young children in
our community. This included the final
installation of sensory boards on the
centres walls.
Newman Playgroup invites new families
with children aged zero to four years old to
enjoy their first session for free.
The children are enjoying the new
equipment which has made a huge impact
on the functionality of the playgroup space.
A specialised area has also been developed
for babies to play and large interchangeable
zones for toddlers. There is also a mums
lounge area and a breast feeding chair.

All the families utilising playgroup would

like to thank BHP Billiton for their grant
supporting the refurbishment project
along with all of the volunteers who
donated their time and energy. A special
acknowledgement to Playgroup WA under
whose auspices this project occurred.
Session times for families with children 0-4
years old occur weekly:
Monday: 9-11 am
Tuesday: 10 am -12 noon
Wednesday: 9-11 am
Friday: 9.30-11.30 am
Saturday: 10-12 noon

Pet Emergencies in Newman: Part 1

There are many new, friendly faces in

Newman. This article delves into what to do
if your pet is struck with illness or is facing
an emergency outside of the Newman
Veterinary Hospitals normal opening hours
which are 8.30 am to 5 pm from Monday
to Friday.
In Newman (unlike many regional Australian
towns), we are fortunate to offer a 24-hour
emergency service for your pets. Our staff
are really experienced and highly trained
in dealing with pet emergencies and our
hospital is equipped with in-house digital
x-ray and diagnostic blood test machines to
give us results within minutes.
The most important thing to remember
is not to panic. Help is normally and,
literally, just around the corner. We always
recommend phoning the Newman Vet
Hospital first, even if you know we are
closed as this will direct you to the after-

hours contact number. Follow the prompts

and leave a brief message. You will be
contacted back as soon as possible. Please
allow 15-20 minutes for a return phone call,
as there are many times I may be dealing
with another pet emergency, driving, at
the supermarket checkout, or even having
a shower!
Being the only on-call vet for a very
large area can be really strenuous. Last
month, the Newman Veterinary Hospital
experienced emergency afterhours every
single day! Stay tuned for next months
article which will provide you with tips to
help prevent emergency call outs and help
me keep my sanity.
Common emergencies or illnesses we see
out of hours in Newman include:
Gastroenteritis causing vomiting and
diarrhoea, inappetence, trembling and
lethargy

Pancreatitis (feeding your pet fatty

leftovers, especially after a BBQ)
Ingestion of poisons for example ratbait, human pain-relief, chocolate etc.
Motor vehicle accidents or other
traumas like being cut on a fence in the
backyard
Dog or dingo attacks (or for our feline
friends cat fight abscesses)
Parvovirus in puppies and dogs not upto-date with their vaccines
Uterus infections in middle aged female
dogs that are not desexed
Snake bites and allergic reactions to
insect bites
Blocked cats (blockage of the male cat
urethra, so they cannot urinate)
Other examples: eye scratches,
collapse, seizures, heat-stroke
Remember do not panic. Help is never far
away!

Holiday Program
EPIC (Empowering People in Communities
Inc) held a full and inclusive school holiday
program that attracted 205 children.
EPICs Community Program Administrator,
Maria, coordinated these holiday sessions
which resulted in lots of laughter and
many smiling faces. Activities offered were
futsal, drama classes, disco, hip hop and
contemporary dance classes, a wildlife
carers talk, along with a potting and
planting session.

Also offered during the winter school

holidays were fabulous craft sessions and
a disco at The Beach Indoor Play Centre,
and activities in the crche at the Newman
Neighbourhood Centre.
The Newman Dance Company held a disco
for their students as a way of launching
their classes in their new venue.

Martu Share Stories

and Learn About Bilby

travelled over 500 km to attend the threeday Bilby festival in Kiwirrkurra. This festival
was the first of its kind in Australia. Over
120 Indigenous rangers from more than
20 different ranger groups, scientists
and government representatives came
together to:
share ideas and experiences on working
with bilbies;
celebrate the cultural significance of
the bilby; and to
hear about the latest scientific research
for bilby and the threats.
For most of the women, it was the first
time attending such an event. They gave
a presentation on what work KJ has done
to look after the bilby and participated in a
number of discussion groups.
It was a great opportunity to share stories
of what the Martu rangers have done and a
chance for the younger women to practice
their public speaking. Some of the other
ranger teams said that it was really great to
see so many young women rangers coming
from KJ and Martu country.

WACFL Football

Last week, two Newman National Football

League players, Matt Dickie (Tigers Football
and Sporting Club) and Dillan Jones (Saints
Football and Sporting Club) were selected
in the 29 man squad for the Western
Australian Country Football League that
played the South Australia Country Football
League (SACFL) at Adelaide Oval on 31
July as the curtain raiser to the Adelaide v
Essendon match. The squad was trimmed
down to the travelling 22 on 25th July. The
outcome of that squad is not known at the
time of this edition going to print.
Players are selected for the WACFL state
side by playing in the Annual Landmark
Country Championships which is an interleague competition between 14 leagues
across the State. Due to the Hills FL
being a late withdrawal from the comp,
the concept of a Regional All Stars team
was created. This included players from
Goldfield FL, Esperance FL, North Pilbara
FL, East Kimberley FL and NNFL.

The Newman players were Ash Roukens

(Tigers), Brad Cocodis, Jacob Fifita (Saints)
Tommy Nelson and Dylan Indich (Centrals)
as well as Matt Dickie and Dillan Jones.
Playing in Division 2, but ineligible for finals
due to being a multi-league team, the All
Stars won all three games and finished on
top of the ladder. 2016 was the first time
this concept was undertaken and was a
great opportunity for NNFL players to be
looked at by state selectors, particularly
given the Regional All Stars were coached
by State Selector Shane Darmody.
All
Newman
players
represented
themselves, their clubs and the NNFL
with pride and thoroughly enjoyed
the experience of playing in a quality
competition with quality players from other
leagues and will bring this experience back
to the NNFL to make them better players.
Congratulations to Dillan Jones who was
also named in the Landmark All Stars team,
which is the best 22 players across the 14
competing leagues.

Martu enjoyed hearing the stories from

other rangers and scientists and felt happy
knowing that they are not alone in carrying
out this important ranger work.
The range of the Bilby has shrunk by
80% with small scattered populations
now occurring across one million square
kilometres of the Australian desert. These
small populations are found in areas
that are mainly Indigenous owned and
managed. KJs ranger teams are undertaking
very important work by looking after this
threatened species. It is a high priority task
as scientists and ecologists view Martu
country as some of the last strongholds for
the bilby.
