Abstract
Low carbon steel is already have many beneficial for industrial
need, but in some other way low carbon steel cannot meet the
requirement for used. Low carbon steel can have high strength
with increasing, its carbon content, but it also decreasing its
ductility and toughness. Each alloying elements give different
effect for steel. Cu in structural steel is proved to strengthen its
corrosion resistance. In this study addition of Cu is done by
diffusion process in steels surface. After the process
copperizing is given an additional process of heating at a
temperature 11000 C is done and continued with the process of
water quenching. Then aging process in to be done in some
temperature variation. The microstructure obtained after
copperizing process are acicular and quasi-polygonal ferrite.
The increasing of aging temperature cased the grow of the
structure and reduce acicular ferrite content. The longer postheat temperatur the more acicular ferrite obtainned in steel.
The highest hardness obtained is at copperizing sampel with
20 minutes post-heat followed with 400 0 C aging temperature,
the value is 192.77HV. Corrosion rate of steel decrease in
copperized sample, it is caused by Cu 2O layer formed in the
samples surface that prevent further corrosion.
