Palestinian plans to sue the
British government over the
1917 Balfour Declaration.
As British Jews prepare
for a series of events next
year to mark the centenary
of the historic document affirming the UKs commitment to a Jewish homeland,
Palestinian Foreign Minister
Riyad al-Maliki asked Arab
leaders for help in a legal
campaign targeting Britain.
The Palestinians said the
claim was on the basis that
London was responsible for
all Israeli crimes.

The letter to Baron Rothschild from then British Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour
gave the green light to the establishment of Israel, but alMaliki said this gave people
who dont belong there
something that wasnt theirs.
Speaking to Jewish News,
former Tory Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind said:
This is a purely political initiative. It will have no legal
force but might generate
some publicity. No more, no
less.
Zionist Federation chairman Paul Charney said: If
[Abbas] really wants to hold

Berger troll faces jail

AN INTERNET troll is facing jail
for a second time after making
anti-Semitic death threats to a
Labour MP in which he told her
she would get it like Jo Cox.
John Nimmo, 28, from South
Shields, sent two emails to
Luciana Berger, telling her to
watch your back Jewish scum.
The second message to the
35-year-old MP for Wavertree,
who hopes to become Mayor of
Liverpool, included a picture
of a large knife and came
three weeks after MP Jo Cox
was murdered following a constituency meeting.
Nimmo was jailed in 2014 for
eight weeks for sending abusive
Tweets to feminist campaigner
Caroline Criado-Perez and MP
Stella Creasy.
His first message made
reference to Joshua
Bonehill-Paine, who had
been charged with a
racially or religiously
aggravated hate
crime
against
Berger. On 6
July, Nimmo
wrote: Justice
for Joshua Bonehill-Paine will be

sweet, he has friends everywhere. Watch your back Jewish
scum, regards your friend the
Nazi. He followed it up two
days later with: You will get it
like Jo Cox did, you better
watch your back Jewish scum.
South Tyneside Magistrates
Court heard a statement from
the former shadow minister for
mental health, in which she said
the messages had caused her
great fear and anguish.
She said: I was extremely
concerned for my safety. I had
previously received anti-Semitic
threats, but the reference to Jo
Cox was terrifying.
Chairman of the bench Ian
Alexander told Nimmo the
seriousness of the offences
meant the case would be referred to crown court for sentencing. It will be heard at
Newcastle Crown Court
in August and Nimmo,
who previously admitted
sending malicious
communications to
Berger, was remanded in custody.
Stamford Hill daubings

ANTI-SEMITIC GRAFFITI has
been daubed on a number of
posters in north London, including on those in support of
refugees.
F*** Yids was found
scrawled on at least four
posters in Stamford Hill, which
has a large strictly Orthodox
Jewish community.
Police told Jewish News they
were aware of an allegation
being made... regarding antiSemitic graffiti scrawled on a
wall on Albany Park Terrace/
Cazenove Road, adding: An
appointment has been scheduled to interview the individual
who reported this matter.
Neighbourhood watch group
Shomrim posted images of the
offensive slogans on Twitter.
Michael Scher, supervisor at
Stamford Hill Shomrim, said:

Local residents were shocked
and disgusted to see the racist
and anti-Semitic graffiti appear
in their neighbourhood.
He added: This appalling
behaviour does not reflect the
wider Hackney community, who
are generally very welcoming
and friendly.
A Community Security Trust
spokesperson said: It is somebody going around with a
marker pen, but it is nasty and
anti-Semitic, intended to cause
alarm.
TOUGHER SENTENCES
URGED ON HATE CRIME
THE GOVERNMENT has promised
tougher sentences for those found guilty
of hate crimes, in one of new Home Secretary Amber Rudds first moves since replacing Theresa May.
The Hate Crime Action Plan, published
on Tuesday, outlines extra security funding
for vulnerable places of worship, stricter
sentences and fresh guidance on raciallyand religiously-aggravated crime.
Detailing a specific and defined threat
to Jewish sites and interests in the UK,
the Home Office said 13.4 million currently distributed through the Community
Security Trust (CST) would continue next
year, as Rudd renewed Mays tough line.
Where crimes are committed, we must
make sure victims have the confidence to
report incidents and the law is rigorously
enforced, she said.
Hatred directed against any community, race or religion has no place whatsoever in our diverse society and it needs to
be kicked to the curb to eradicate hate
crime.
Acknowledging the need to improve
the response to online hate crimes, the
Home Office report said MPs had met
internet industry executives to discuss
a range of initiatives and policy changes,
including best practice guidance.
It also said the Director of Public
Prosecutions would publish guidance on
prosecuting cases involving communications sent via social media following a
national consultation.
Several Jewish charities were named as
stakeholders in the governments push,
with Anne Frank Trust UK, CST, Maccabi
GB and Streetwise all listed as partners.
We are very glad to have helped play
a part in the making of this new hate crime
action plan for the benefit of all communities, said CST communications director
Mark Gardner. We regret that such things
are necessary, but hope that, in time, this
will help improve the situation.
The Home Office noted that strictly

Addressing concerns that the government was soft on hate crime, it said:

some people do not report hate crime
because they believe there is little chance

Campaign Against Anti-Semitism direc-
tor Jonathan Sacerdoti said: The recent

[post-Brexit] surge in recorded hate
crime revealed what Jewish citizens have
known for too long: hate crime is often
dismissed and not prosecuted. Nonviolent anti-Semitic hate crime often goes
unprotected, creating an atmosphere of
impunity.
The government published its first Hate
Crime Action Plan in March 2012, and
updated this two years later. However, the
problem appears to be on the rise, with
more than 15,000 people prosecuted last
year a 4.8 percent rise on the previous
12 months. The new plan comes after an
increase in racism in the aftermath of the
Brexit vote, when there were almost 300
incidents being reported each day.

ANTI-SEMITISM HAS no place in Great

Britains diverse and tolerant society.
In the past few years, the Jewish
community has been the target of
horrific attacks in Paris, Copenhagen,
Brussels and Toulouse. These outrages
horrify the people of Britain, but racist
and religious hate crimes are also taking place within our shores.
The threat to the Jewish community
in this country is something that I cannot, and will not, ignore.
Last year the Community Security
Trust (CST) received 924 reports of
anti-Semitic incidents in Britain, including 86 violent assaults. Any attack of
this kind is one too many.
We must challenge anti-Semitism
wherever we find it, and action is now
being taken to ensure the safety and
security of the Jewish community.

This week, I published a Hate Crime
Action Plan, setting out the steps the
government is taking to prevent all
forms of hate crime, to protect victims
and boost reporting.
It details work already underway
to tackle these abhorrent crimes and
increase safety for the Jewish community, including 13.4 million funding
specifically to protect Jewish schools,
synagogues and community sites.
Prevention is also key and we are
funding an extension of the powerful
Anne Frank Trust Schools Programme,
which uses Annes life and diary to
empower young people with the
knowledge, skills and confidence to
challenge all forms of prejudice and
discrimination.
This programme has already reached
thousands of young people up and
down the country.
It is vital we give people the confidence to report hate crime and know it
will be taken seriously. Kick It Out has
worked with the CST and Maccabi GB

on guidance on anti-Semitism in football that has been sent to all professional clubs.
And after hearing that members of
the Charedi community are less likely
to report hate crime, we are working
with them to educate young people on
what constitutes hate crime and how to
report it.
We have also improved police
recording of religious hate crime, while
new Crown Prosecution Service guidance will encourage tougher sentences
in religious and racial hate crime cases.
But we will not stop there. My job as
Home Secretary is to protect all the
people and communities that make us
Great Britain and I will do all I can to
achieve this.
Let there be no doubt, I will not
stand for anti-Semitism or any form
of hatred. Communities across Britain
must come together and stand
united against those who use hate to
divide us.

Labour Movement (JLM), was
elected to the 11-member
National Constitutional Committee, which has power to
expel Londons former mayor
from the party. It will also arbitrate over other disciplinary
cases.
It is the first time a JLM candidate has been elected to a
national committee in 20 years.

Church horror attack on faith itself

THE MURDER of a Catholic priest in a
Normandy church has been described
as an attack against all religions as
Israels president joined Jewish leaders
worldwide in condemning the outrage.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for
the attack after two terrorists stormed
the church during mass and made
84-year-old priest Father Jacques Hamel
kneel before slitting his throat. Another
person one of four hostages inside
the place of worship in Saint-Etiennedu-Rouvray, south of Rouen,
Normandy was in a critical condition on Wednesday.
As Pope Francis expressed
sorrow and horror at the latest terrorist attack in Europe,
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis
described it as a despicable
desecration of the sanctity of
human life in a place of peaceful
worship. He added: Prayers with
our Catholic friends.
Board of Deputies senior vice-president Richard Verber said: This callous
murder of a priest in France in the name
of a twisted ideology is an attack on all
of us. The murder of a defenceless
84-year-old, a man who had dedicated
his life to his community and was going
about his own business is beyond
disturbing.
Dr Moshe Kantor, president of the
European Jewish Congress, pledged
that the dastardly attack would only
strengthen the worlds resolve to defeat
Islamist terrorism.
An attack against a religious institution and a man of God is an attack
The death of Father Jacques Hamel provoked hundreds of tributes
against all religions and

faith itself, he added.
World Jewish Congress
president Ronald Lauder
insisted the fight ahead is not a
war between religions, but between
good and evil. We must stand as one in
the face of this great threat.
Condemnation also came from Israel,
where President Reuven Rivlin said:
This attack shows the true face of the
brutal nature and the horror of terrorism.
The whole free world must understand
that our values are under attack.
He added: Israel stands side by side
with the people of France, and we send
our thoughts and prayers to the victims
and their families.
France is still reeling from a deadly
terror attack in Nice on 14 July, Bastille
Day, in which more than 80 people were

murdered. Visiting the site of the church
attack, President Francois Hollande
pledged to fight IS by all means, while
Theresa May offered the condolences of
Britain.
This attack comes after a spate of
violent terror in Germany over the past
week and a half with varying motivations leaving Germans full of fear
according to the governor of Bavaria.
On Sunday, a bomb was detonated
by a man who killed himself and left
more than a dozen others injured. Two
days earlier, an 18-year old German of
Iranian descent killed nine people in
Munich, prompting the government
to review gun laws. It was not thought
to have been motivated by Islamist
extremism.
Learning from Israel

FRENCH PHILOSOPHER Bernard-Henri Levy
says his country and others facing terrorism in
Europe should look at Israel as a way of learning how to respond.
The war correspondent, speaking to presenter John Humphrys on yesterdays Today programme on BBC Radio 4, commented on the
latest terrorist attack in Normandy, in northern
France, in which an octogenarian priest had his
throat cut by two men.
One of the men had made so many attempts to go to Syria that he had been electronically tagged by the French authorities but,
unfortunately, the tag was switched off at the
time the attack took place on Tuesday. Islamic
State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the
attack.
Levy warned: Daesh [IS] is acting as a sort
of monstrous magnet for the worst kind of
actions. We have to know that it [such terrorism] will last for a long time and will not be
repaired in a glance.
Nevertheless, he told Humphrys, there was
one way of responding and it is a pattern
which has worked. And that is Israel.
For years, Levy said, because, alas, of its
terrible and long experience of terror, Israel
has put in place some ways of resisting.
It means day-to-day sorts of reflexes and
reactions. It means, alas, another way of dealing with public space. It means developing
a sixth sense, a sense of danger which the
Israelis have all the time; they know [terrorism]
can happen at any time.
He said this kind of response was not just a matter
for the state, but for society
and each of us. It is a very
narrow path, and we should
not become paranoid,
but a constant awareness is required.

Vast amounts of gas newly found
off the Israeli coast have given the
country a wealth of options and
this being Israel much to argue
about, writes Stephen Oryszczuk

s announcements go, it was

almost lost in the sea of news,
but as far as implications go,
it could be one of the great defining
moments in Israeli history.
So it was that Yuval Steinitz,
Israels reluctant energy minister,
told the world via the IDC Herzliya
Conference last month that there
was now a good chance that Israel
had four times as much gas under its
seabed as first thought.
Large deposits of natural gas off
Israels Mediterranean coast have
long been known about. The
Leviathan field, which alone could
meet all of Israels energy needs,
was once dubbed a gift from God
by Benjamin Netanyahu.
But if Steinitz is right, there could
be 2,200bcm still to be explored.
Put another way, thats the equivalent of another four Leviathans.
It could, Steinitz said, kick-start a
stuttering economy, and be a huge
growth engine at a time when investments and exports are increasingly proving insufficient to meet
Israels needs. Over the next two
years, it will save us from zero
growth per capita, he swooned.
But Steinitz doesnt have his eye

just on domesticity. The new gas
could prove Israel's newest weapon,
and by far her most potent.
Among her neighbours, many of
whom are oil-rich energy giants,
Israel is known for its military might
but its energy needs. In short, it has
only ever carried big sticks. Now it
dangles a large and juicy carrot, too.
If the gas could be exported via
pipeline at reasonable cost to places
like Egypt, Jordan and Turkey, it
could have a transformative effect.
Steinitz is in no doubt what this
means for his homeland, and now
that the long-drawn-out process of
developing a framework finally
seems to be over, he says the work
and benefits will soon be seen.
In terms of Israels position
in the world, this has great advantages. We could even become a
significant exporter to western Europe, he says, in a reminder to
British listeners that the North Sea
oil reserves are dwindling.
If you can liquefy it, you can
export it anywhere in the world.
Without a doubt, this could position
Israel completely differently vis--vis
Europe and the Middle East. We will
never be an energy superpower, but
in the next ten years we could
become a significant actor. If this
materialises, it would be a dream.
Its nice that the minister is
dreaming, says Eitan Cabel, a fiery
member of the Knesset, but now he
needs to wake up. Theres an energy crisis in Israel. People actually
feel it. The economic reality is
that factories and plants are not
connecting to gas. Theres nothing
in our hands yet. All we have are
Benjamin Netanyahu with one of his

lawyers at a Supreme Court hearing
into a gas-drilling deal with the US
stories. When will this change? How

long does it take?
An exasperated Cabel, who
blames both the government and
the private sector, is expressing the
frustrations of many, after years of
wrangling over how best to exploit
the resource. But Yossi Abu, chief
executive of Delek Drilling, whose
company has been closely involved
in what is, by some distance, Israels
largest infrastructure project to
date, has his own frustrations.
Fifteen billion shekels, this is
what they said wed save, says
a raging Abu. For five years weve
had people calling us saying to us
give us gas. We say we cant,
were waiting for the framework, its
stuck with the regulators.
The six-year process, a legal quagmire of drafting contracts, is widely
perceived as a commercial and legislative nightmare, says Dror Strum,
president of the Israeli Institute for
Economic Planning. The story of
gas so far has been the saddest

story, he said. Dozens of factories
in Israel sit in need of gas, while they
use methanol, crude or diesel.
Far from Steinitzs vision of
exporting it far and wide, he says:
We need to first look at our own
needs, develop our own economy.
Our only growth at the moment is
due to our domestic consumption.
We should not be looking outwards
for export, but looking inwards.
Orit Farkash-Hacohen, the former chair of Israels Public Utilities
Authority, agrees that Israeli
industries such as glass, pharmaceuticals, refining and petrochemicals are suffering as a result of
hold-ups. It all comes down to the
price of gas as stipulated in the contracts and as compared to global
energy prices, she says.
Were competing with gas from
the world market. The price of gas
in Israel is increasing, but the price
of gas on the world market is
falling, and will continue to fall. So
we need to make sure were not
signed up to artificially high prices.
Israels resources should have
given us a competitive edge, she
says. But they havent. It comes
down to price.
The government has a monopoly, and this affects prices. The government needs to go back; it needs
to look at what it did and ask what
it is going to do now.
Meanwhile, the drillers stand
ready, says Abu. More than 500 million shekels will be invested by the
end of the year. This is drama. There
will be a rig, the tendering process is
nearing completion. The time for talk
is over. Its time for action.

Plea on schools
THE NEW Secretary of State
for Education should scrap the
50 percent cap on faith-based
admissions to Jewish schools,
community leaders have said.
In a letter to Justine Greening, Board of Deputies CEO
Gillian Merron said: The
majority of Jewish schools [are]
in favour of the abolition of the
50 percent rule.
Asking for a more flexible
approach, the Board said the
cap had prevented the creation of more faith-based free
schools. Last week 68 rabbis
wrote to Greening, opposing
the cap, hoping that the government reshuffle would
change thinking.
Council unity
ANTI-SEMITISM IN the Labour
Party was among the topics
discussed by Jewish councillors of all political stripes at an
annual networking event this
week.
Across 14 City boroughs,
there are 67 Jewish councillors, most of whom attended
London Jewish Forums reception at the Jewish Museum in
Camden on Monday.
LJF chair Adrian Cohen told
the gathering: Jewish councillors are in many respects on
the front line and your
input into your boroughs is
vital.
UJS: weve been sidelined

NATIONAL STUDENT leader
Malia Bouattia this week said
Jews would choose the Jewish
representative to an influential
anti-racism committee but
the communitys student representative body complained it
had been sidelined.
The furore surrounds the
NUSs Anti-Racism Anti-Fascism (ARAF) campaign, which
has traditionally had a Jewish
representative chosen by the
NUS president in consultation
with the Union of Jewish Students.
The NUS national executive
committee (NEC) ruled in
February to end the longstanding practice of having a
guaranteed Jewish representative on ARAF, with the intention that the group would be
co-convened by the Black Students officer and another NEC
member from one of several
minorities. This was overturned
by the NEC last week in a
motion whose wording implied
that the Jewish representative
would be chosen by the 40member NEC.
Bouattia has now confirmed,
in a letter to Cambridge University Students Union, that
the Jewish representative will
be elected by a self-identifying caucus, which means
Jewish students already on the
NEC. Josh Nagli, campaigns

Students, said this meant not
involving the vast majority of
Jewish students.
Its more than a snub,
said Nagli. It shows that
there are still some in the
NUS who are unwilling to listen to Jewish voices. Shes
saying that four people [Jewish students on the NEC] will
choose the Jewish representative, but they have not themselves been elected by Jewish
students.
Bouattia, whose election
provoked widespread opposition after she had previously
referred
to
Zionist-led
media, met UJS officers the
day after she was elected earlier this year. In her letter to
CUSU, in which she responded to concerns about
anti-Semitism and Jewish representation, she said: As your
president I intend to fight for
the rights and safety of all students, including Jewish students.
She said there was no
place for any form of racism,
including anti-Semitism, in
NUS, or across the student
movement, adding that she
should be held to account
for upholding this belief.

MP on the unions future
Restitution fury over Polish law

THOSE SEEKING restitution
for Holocaust victims families
this week attacked a tribunal
verdict upholding the Polish
Parliaments decision to limit
claims for private property in
the capital, Warsaw.
Since October 1945, claimants had applied for the restitution of private city property,
all of which was transferred to
Warsaw municipality after the
war. But Soviet authorities
ignored most claims, before
closing the process in 1988.
The World Jewish Restitution Organisation (WJRO) criticised a decision by the Polish
Constitutional Tribunal, to back
an unjust law passed last

year that limits the rights of
claimants.
The WJRO said that Poland
was now the only European
Union country that had failed
to address the issue of confiscated Holocaust or Communist
era private property.
We are very disappointed,
said the WJROs Gideon Taylor.
This decision highlights the
need for Poland, at long last,
to do what all other countries
in the former Soviet bloc have
done.
About 350,000 Jews lived in
pre-war Warsaw, many related
to todays British Jews.
Janner hearing due in March

THE GODDARD Inquiry into
historical child sex abuse has
postponed its hearings on Lord
Janner until next March, partly
because of another probe into
the way Leicestershire Police
handled allegations against the
late Labour peer and ex-MP.
Criminal and gross misconduct notices have been served
on 11 people over the alleged

Rabbis gift of a
refugee home
Louise Freedman, Rabbi Janet Darley and Alice Alphandary from SLLS
and have their applications for

asylum examined here.
A series of fundraising initiatives will be held within the local
community in addition to donations and grants. Alphandary
explained that the synagogue
has previously used the space
for general rental, but were now
inspired by Janets work to
inject this project with Jewish
values and use it to truly welcome the stranger.
Describing the service as
both moving and exciting,
Rabbi Darley said: I received
some lovely presents from the
congregation, but the best one
of all was the promise that the
flat they hope to create in part
of the building to provide an
income stream will be rented to
a Syrian refugee family.
Tributes were paid during
the service which was followed
by a kiddush by the Mayor
of Lambeth, Councillor Saleha
Jaffer, Citizens UK chief executive Neil Jameson and Liberal
Judaisms senior rabbi Danny
Rich.
Rabbi Darley was presented
with a special tallit designed
by cheder headteacher Jackie
Ashton and made by the communitys children and a donation to her refugee appeal.
Student Rabbi Nathan Godleman will take over the south
London pulpit for the next year,
as part of his Leo Baeck College
fourth year placement.

A LONDON SYNAGOGUE will

convert part of its premises into
a home for refugees as a leaving
gift to its retiring rabbi, writes
Jack Mendel.
South London Liberal Synagogue (SLLS) announced plans
for the project, expected to
cost up to 50,000, in recognition of Rabbi Janet Darleys
work supporting newcomers to
Britain. It is hoped the conversion will enable a family of
refugees to live there.
SLLS chair Alice Alphandary,
who announced the plan at the
end of a special Shabbat service
in Rabbi Darleys honour, said:
We are all so proud of the work
Janet has been doing alongside Citizens UK and other faith
groups to encourage the government to allow more refugees
into Britain, and then welcome
them when they get here.
We knew the best present
we could give Janet was to mark
her retirement with a project
that continued this amazing
social justice work.
Rabbi Darley, who has served
SSLS for seven years, was part of
a Citizens UK team that won the
Champions of the Year prize at
the Women on the Move
Awards.
The charity recently won a
major legal victory for children in
the refugee camps in Calais,
who have relatives in the UK,
which will enable these children
to come and join their families
New buddy benches unveiled

Two brightly-coloured buddy benches at Sinai Jewish Primary School
have been created to help children make friends. The benches, which
will be ready for the childrens return in September, were designed by
pupils Melissa Charles (Y5) and Liat Tilsiter (Yr2).
Rosh Pinah celebrates upgrade to good by Ofsted

ROSH PINAH Primary School has been
upgraded to good by a recent Ofsted
inspection.
The state-aided primary school in Edgware, which has 443 pupils, was previously
rated as inadequateby Ofsted in 2014.
In response, governors brought in Lilac
Sky, an external education agency, to help
run the school and installed headteacher
Angela Gartland.
The latest report said the school had
successfully tackled the weaknesses
identified at the previous inspection and
praised the tenacious and courageous

governors for ensuring improvements were
made.
Ofsted awarded Rosh Pinah good ratings in all areas, including the effectiveness of leadership and management.
Teachers were praised for providing
consistently helpful and comprehensible
guidance to pupils, while inspectors noted
that pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is very well provided for.
The report also found that pupils were
making good progress in the early years.
However, Ofsted found there was room for

improvement in helping pupils reach higher
levels in writing, as they do already in reading and mathematics.
Chair of governors Andrew Rotenberg
said: Our recent Ofsted inspection report
confirms Rosh Pinahs position as the premier Jewish primary school in the community, known for its strong leadership and
governance, good teaching and excellent
integrated secular and modern Orthodox

Saying there was no legal or

claim, UK Lawyers for Israel chair
Jonathan Turner said: The Balfour Declaration was not a legal
document and did not have legal
consequences.
Al-Malikis plea came in Mauritania on Monday, at the annual
meeting of the Arab League, in
the absence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and
Saudi Arabias King Salman.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was aware
of the Palestinian plan. The Palestinian mission in the UK declined
to comment.
Lib Dems urged to expel Tonge

PRESSURE WAS mounting on the Liberal Democrats
finally to kick Baroness Tonge out of the party this
week, after she claimed Israels treatment of the
Palestinians was a major cause of jihadism and
Islamic State.
It also emerged that the anti-Israel peer had
earlier this year shared an article referring to Jewish
power targeting the Labour Party.
In a House of Lords statement on Palestinian children last Thursday, Tonge said: The treatment of
the Palestinians by Israel is a major cause of the rise
of extreme Islamism and Daesh [Islamic State].
Board of Deputies of British Jews vice-president
Marie van der Zyl said it was another House of
Lords debate and another outrageous speech from
Baroness Tonge on the Middle East, adding: It is
time for Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron to expel
her once and for all from the party.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism said in a
statement: We cannot expect [her] to apologise, as
she means it. It is now time for her to be expelled
not just from the parliamentary party, [but] from the
House of Lords.
The Community Security Trusts Mark Gardner
said: This is the latest in a long line of provocative
statements that will cause offence. As with all political parties, it is for them to decide if they want to be
associated with such behaviour.
This week it emerged that Tonge had shared an
article by anti-Israel author Gilad Atzmon, in which
he said: British Labour is the current target of an intensive exercise in Jewish power. The Jewish lobby
and media are openly silencing criticism of Israel and
Jewish power. Gardner said of her decision to share
the article: She can make whatever excuses she
likes, but this stinks.
Tonge sits as an independent peer, having resigned the party whip in 2012 after refusing to apologise for saying Israel is not going to be there
forever. In 2010, she was sacked as health

Israeli woman raped in Himalayas

Two people have been arrested
in connection with an alleged
gang-rape of a young Israeli
woman in a remote Himalayan
town in northern India.
The woman, who is 25, said
the incident occurred in the
early hours of Sunday, after
she became separated from
her two friends in Manali and
hailed a car that police said she
mistook for a taxi.
She told investigators that
a car carrying six men pulled
over and offered her a lift. Two
of the men are then alleged to

New centre will showcase Israeli technology

Shimon Peres has launched an
innovation centre in Jaffa to
showcase how Israel reached the
cutting edge of science and technology in the hope that it will
build bridges across the region.
The centre, which is expected
to attract hundreds of thousands
of tourists when it opens in 2018,
will tell the story of Israel as the
start-up nation, profiling inventive techniques in areas such as

Parents of murdered teenager tell Pride marchers: Stand up for a tolerant society
THOUSANDS PAID tribute to murdered
teenager Shira Banki on Thursday as a
record-breaking 25,000 people took part
in Jerusalems annual Gay Pride march.
Despite threats to the event and painful
memories of the attack at last years march
which claimed the life of 16-year-old Shira
(pictured), five times the previous record
number attended the event in response to
a call from her parents, Ori and Mika.

Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Christians and Muslims as supporters.
Speeches made included criticism of

Jerusalems mayor Nir Barkat who, while
backing the right of the march to take
place in the city and supportive of efforts
for tolerance, did not attend to avoid offending the strictly Orthodox community.
TV personality Assi Azar said: Today
we have with us here religious people,
men and women, who are a part of the
LGTBQ community, and we have religious
leaders who honoured us with their presence. This is how a bridge is built.
Earlier last week, 250 Charedi rabbis
and yeshiva heads wrote in support of

Rabbi Yegal Levinstein, the head of an IDF
pre-conscription academy, who was criticised for calling homosexuals perverts,
and in support of another rabbi, who said
gay people were handicapped.
In response, hundreds have signed a
statement of tolerance advertised in
Haaretz newspaper, sponsored and co-ordinated by the New Israel Fund. Several
British Jews added their name, telling
Pride marchers: We stand with you in
spirit.

HE GENTLY turned the handle of the old-fashioned
minute music box, producing a calming, beautiful
sound that filled the space between himself and the
young man cowering in the opposite corner.
As all else was silent and the melody continued its
slow, steady rhythm, the fear and uncertainty gently
washed away.
Encouraged by the simple yet sincere gesture, this
young man who struggles every day to interact with
other people looked up and met Dushs glance.
In that brief moment, years of barriers were undone.
For David Barashi, whose stage name Dush is
a nod to his fathers Kurdish roots, this connection

So when he was invited to Kisharon Adult Day
Centre in Hendon to meet people with learning disabilities and complex special needs, he knew not
only what their challenges were, but exactly how to
build trust and to offer something profoundly positive to their day.
Calling Dush a clown feels like a disservice. Aside
from the lack of face paint and garish costume, he is
a trained specialist in medical therapy and an integrated facet of the Israeli healthcare system; working
as part of multidisciplinary teams in various units
including paediatrics and sexual abuse clinics. He is
also part of the IDF Israeli emergency team sent
around the globe to help in natural disasters such as
Haiti and Nepal.
I deal with the person as a whole, explains Dush,
who was touring the country for a week to educate
people on what is still a medical phenomenon in the
UK, visiting Immanuel and Menorah Foundation
Schools, Tzofim Friends of Israeli Scouts Association,
the S&P Synagogue in Lauderdale Road and North
Middlesex University Hospital.
We believe medicine solves only part of the
problem and that emotional wellbeing is crucial. As
such, I aim to make the hospital environment full of
creativity and colour and sound.
Rather than tricks, Dushs small rickety brown case
holds the most basic entertainment tools, albeit with
photos of his wife and daughter. They remind

me every day that I have all the riches in the world

I need, which is my motivation for helping others,
he admits. I purposefully dont bring lots of paraphernalia. I prefer to make moments, not balloons.
The truth of this is evident as he finds his stride in
a room now full of young adults for whom a stranger
engaging with them is usually difficult to bear. Bearing witness to the session, one can only attribute his
ability to interact with everyone so personally, while
facilitating them interacting with one another, as
a spark of pure magic. It is clear why this industry has
blossomed since its beginnings. In 2002, three medical clowns went to work at Hadassah. There are now
111 employed across 29 hospitals in Israel, interacting with 200,000 child and adult patients a year.
The scientifically-proven positive effects on
patients of these specialists include stress reduction,
improved tolerance to pain and an ability to alter
functions such as heart rate and blood pressure.
We cannot change their reality but we can
change their view on their new reality, Dush concedes. Traditional clowns paint smiles on their faces.
I dont, firstly because it creates a mask, which is
a barrier between myself and the patient, and

secondly, and importantly, because its important to
recognise sometimes a smile is inappropriate. There
isnt always a reason to smile and I certainly would
not want people to think I was mocking them by
making light of their situation.
The value of the medical clowns on the ground is
palpable. Using their client-centred approach, they
ask permission to enter a patients room, giving them
back the first bit of control since entering the hospital, explains Haddasah UK director Mark Addleman.
The dialogue develops the bond of friendship,
created through laughter and the application of
clowning techniques and sensitivity, to focus, listen
and respond to the patient. With relationship and
trust established, the clown opens the way for the
young patient to feel safe and relax as doctors perform the required treatment.

as entertainers but therapists who work as an essential part of our Hadassah medical team.

An attack on
all religions
HE WAS an 84-year old priest, but to his attackers, his age was not
as important as his religion. What happened in a church in Normandy
this week sickened and repulsed us all, in part because of how it was
perpetrated, in part because it was so targeted, so symbolic.
Unlike the Nice truck attack, in which 85 people of all ages and
faiths were mown down at random, Father Jacques Hamel was
slaughtered because of the robes he wore, the God he worshipped,
the place he said his prayers. As the Israeli president said, they
murdered him in the house of God while pretending to speak in
Gods name.
The Jewish community knows how this feels. We know all too well
weve been top of the jihadists target list for years. In Copenhagen,
Toulouse and Paris, Jews were killed for being Jews. Now Christians
are killed for being Christian. The same can be said of anyone whose
life has been brutally ended because they did not subscribe to the
Islamic States specific brand of delusion.
Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress, this
week said it was an attack on all religions and on faith itself. Our
response must include our faith in the good of Islam as it was intended,
and in the good of millions of Muslims throughout the world.
PA turns lawfare

THE PALESTINIAN Authority is to sue the UK for Israeli crimes
since 1948 because in 1917 Lord Balfour said he supported the
establishment of a Jewish homeland. A lot has happened in the
Middle East since then (world wars, ethnic conflicts, dictators use
of chemical weapons, refugee crises, that sort of thing), but the PA
only wants to sue just for some of it.
Notwithstanding that this was a letter (not a legal document), or
that it was a statement of intent (not a binding commitment), or
that the Mandate for Palestine was legally adopted by the League
of Nations it was written almost a century ago!
Were no lawyers, but that would appear to be quite important.
If not, perhaps Mahmoud Abbas could sue others for crimes
committed on Palestinian land such as the Egyptians,
Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Greeks, Byzantines...

POLICE TO TALK TO
If British police are going to interview Tzipi
Livini, then there are many more visitors to
our shores that they should question.
For example, any Saudi official who is or
was involved with amputations as a punishment should really be arrested and prosecuted. The same goes for Iranian visitors
involved with Iranian human rights abuses.
Chinese officials visiting the UK if they are
or were involved with taking organs out of
prisoners should be arrested.
When Spain requested the extradition of
Pinochet, the UK Foreign office should have
said that Spain must prosecute everyone
alive who was involved with human rights
abuses under General Franco before
Pinochet was extradited.
The major difference with Nazi war criminals, apart from their crimes being uniquely
horrific, is that their state does not exist any
more.
Since May 1945, Nazi war criminals have
no country to represent them. While Nazi
Germany still existed, German officials travelling abroad by invitation would not have
been arrested. Hess was arrested because
he came to the UK without permission and
we were at war with Germany at the time.
The police cannot be allowed to interview or arrest alleged foreign abusers of
human rights as it would make for very bad
relations with the allies of the UK, and
arresting an official from a powerful country
like China could even lead to a war.
Secondly the police should do what they
are paid to do, which is to arrest criminals,
and not meddle in issues which are best left
to the UK Foreign Office.

Even without nuclear arms, an emboldened Iran can fund regional terrorism to
influence affairs in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon,
as well as on Israels borders.
With a nuclear shield, which now looks
like a long-term certainty, Iran becomes a
truly lethal prospect. In the face of this
threat, the absence of effective global leadership is a matter of deep concern.

IRANS NUCLEAR GOALS WHY SO MUCH COVERAGE

OF CHAREDI GOINGS-ON?
ARE A HUGE THREAT
Earlier this week, Irans foreign minister,
Mohammad Javad Zarif, beamed with pride
as he told his countrymen that Iran would
eventually resume its clandestine nuclear
programme.
Why did Zarif exude such confidence and
optimism when the Joint Comprehensive
Plan of Action signed last year apparently
stopped the Iranian bomb in its tracks? The
answer lies in a document, submitted by
Iran to the International Atomic Energy
Agency, about which Zarif alluded in his
remarks.
This document, seen by Associated Press
reporters and since verified anonymously
by two diplomats, outlines how Iran
plans to expand its uranium enrichment
programme when the nuclear deal with the
west expires after a decade. It is the only
part of the agreement from 2015 that has
not been made public.
This addendum to the deal says that in
a decades time, Iran will start to replace its
older uranium enriching centrifuges with
thousands of more advanced ones. Being
more efficient, these centrifuges will enrich
uranium more quickly and thus reduce the
breakout time that Iran needs to produce a
bomb.
Combined with the revelation from
German intelligence that Iran has been
trying to purchase material to further its
nuclear programme, and the fact that she is
able to carry out nuclear research, these
developments are deeply alarming.
They show that critics of Obamas Iran
I was disappointed to read the headline

which denigrates a whole section of the
Jewish community for the fact they made
completely innocuous weather enquiries

of the Met Office (Jewish News, 21 July
2016).
Hopefully the report will not catch the
eye of the non-Jewish press and be given
even wider publicity.
Something similar happened a few weeks
ago when a group of Charedi teenagers
were caught by incoming tides near Dover
and had to be rescued by the emergency
services. This even received widespread
reporting in the general press and mention
on the BBC, yet a similar incident a few
weeks later involving German schoolchildren on an educational trip was completely
ignored by the media.
It appears that anything done by the
strictly-Orthodox community becomes
newsworthy whereas when precisely the
same is done by others, it is totally ignored.
One must, therefore, ask whether there
is some underlying motivation for such
an excessive preoccupation with events
involving Charedim.

THE SCARY SIDE OF

THE PRIDE MARCH
Last Thursday, we saw the Pride March
through the streets of Jerusalem. Its frightening that in modern Israel this is a divisive
issue. Its scary there needed to be so much
security, with 30 people, two with knives,
arrested for trying to disrupt the event.
Its clear, that Pride is a flashpoint for
some of Israels religious community. While
its true many Orthodox people attended to
pay a fitting tribute to Shira Banki, who was
murdered in the 2015 march, its also apparent there is opposition, and its not an issue
that can be swept under the carpet.
It cant be dismissed like other issues
through the unifying language of Israels
security concerns against external dangers.
Israel will battle to be as secure as it can
from its enemies, but if it is insecure about
itself internally, that will be its biggest
enemy.

Spielberg should not shrug

off Dahls anti-Semitism
BY THE time the celebrated childrens author, Roald
Dahl, died in 1990, he was most certainly a splenetic and bad-tempered old man.
Neither attribute can possibly excuse Dahls
sustained and all-too-frequently uttered antiSemitism, which found expression in a series of
public outbursts in the 1980s but which, his biographer Jeremy Treglown recorded, may well have
dated as far back as 1948 when Dahl was 31.
There seems to have been something about us
Jews that got under Dahls skin. In an interview with
the Independent eight months before his death, he
said: Im certainly anti-Israel and Ive become antiSemitic inasmuch as that you get a Jewish person
in another country like England strongly supporting
Zionism. Asked by a Jewish journalist if he could
elaborate, Dahl spluttered: Why are you being so
persistent? It is not a trait of your Jewish race to be
rude but you are certainly being rude I am an old
hand at dealing with you buggers.
In 1983, in the wake of the Lebanon War, he
reviewed a strongly pro-Palestinian book for the
Literary Review, in which he found it necessary to
write: It makes one wonder in the end what sort
of people these Israelis are. It is like the good old
Hitler and Himmler times all over again.
That year, he told the New Statesman: There is
a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke
animosity, maybe its a kind of lack of generosity
towards non-Jews. Theres always a reason why
anti-anything crops up anywhere; even a stinker like

Hitler didnt just pick on them for no reason.
I mean, if you and I were in a line moving
towards what we knew were gas chambers, Id
rather have a go at taking one of the guards with
me; but they [the Jews] were always submissive.
He claimed he never knew a Jew who had served
in the British armed forces, and was convinced that
no one else had seen one, either.
And now the celebrated film-maker, Steven
Spielberg, a fiercely proud and identifying Jew, has
made a film based on Dahls story, The BFG, or Big
Friendly Giant, which, as it happens, stars the
remarkable actor, Mark Rylance, who has not been
backward in revealing his discomfort with Israel.
But those critical of Israel do not all fall into the
same category. Rylances support for campaigns
such as BDS, the boycott, divestment and sanctions
movement, ought not to make him less of a BFG.
In fact, it ought to make him a perfect target for
asking him to re-think his opinions.
Dahl, however, is quite another matter (not least
because he is dead). Spielberg confessed this year
that he had not looked into Dahls views as thoroughly as he might. But he sought to downplay the
visceral extent of Dahls anti-Semitism by saying
that a) Dahl was a maverick who said whatever
came into his head in order to provoke, and that b)
his opinions were typical of those of his generation,
and they did not detract from his literary genius.
I beg to differ. Looking back at Dahls public

utterances which are shocking enough to make
one wonder what on earth he said in private
I dont buy that he was inconsistent in his attitudes
towards Jews, or said things just to see if he could
enrage people. At one point he complained: The
Israelis killed 22,000 civilians when they bombed
Beirut it was very much hushed up in the newspapers because they are primarily Jewish-owned
there arent any non-Jewish publishers anywhere.
So not just an anti-Semite, but a liar.
And as for the claim that his views did not bleed
into his fiction? Several of Dahls stories featured
derogatory caricatures of Jews, including the tale
of a little pawnbroker in Houndsditch called
Meatbein who, when the wailing started, would
rush downstairs to the large safe in which he kept
his money, open it and wriggle inside on to the
lowest shelf where he lay like a hibernating hedgehog until the all-clear.
In 1983, Tommy Lapid, father of the present-day
politician Yair Lapid, and then director-general of
the Israel Broadcasting Authority, made a dignified
announcement, saying Israeli TV would not show a
proposed new series of Tales of the Unexpected,
based on Dahls stories, because it did not want to
pay royalties to a man who could make such antiJewish statements.
To which I say, bravo, Tommy. And, are you
paying attention, Steven?

Yet more proof that NUS

reputation is in tatters
I FOUND myself in the rather unusual, and
uncomfortable, position of agreeing with new
backbencher Michael Gove during our last
week in Parliament before the summer recess. In the debate on the governments
Higher Education Bill, Gove described the
National Union of Students as a chilling environment and a cold home for students, particularly those who are Jewish.
Last week, Izzy Lenga, a member of the
NUS National Executive Council (NEC) described the movement as toxic for Jewish
students, following a decision by the NEC to
abandon the long-established tradition that
the NUS anti-racism [campaign] would be
co-convened by a Jewish student in consultation with the Union of Jewish Students
(UJS).
To add insult to injury, one NUS executive
member referred to an amendment in the debate as not the final solution.
This latest embarrassment is only the latest
in a string of incidents during the past year
that have left NUS reputation in tatters.
Its new president attracted controversy by
referring to the University of Birmingham as
a Zionist outpost on account of its large
and well-organised Jewish society. She also
trotted out the old anti-Semitic trope of Jews
controlling the media with a tirade against
Zionist-led media outlets. A motion to

commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day was
subjected to an unprecedented level of controversy and debate at this years NUS Conference.
That the UJS has concluded that NUS,
and specifically the NUS president, have no
desire to listen to Jewish students will inevitably be met with concern by Jewish students and the wider Jewish community.
If this were not enough to spur students
and students unions to ask what on earth
their NUS leaders are playing at, they should
be in no doubt about the damage this is
doing to NUSs standing, beyond UK Jewry.
All students will suffer as a result of the reputational damage to NUS. If NUS can no
longer claim to represent all students, irrespective of background, its legitimacy as the
national voice for all students is undermined.
Ministers will find it easy to marginalise
NUS when students need it to be at its most
influential.
The Higher Education Bill currently making
its way through Parliament carries with it real
risks for students. It paves the way for further
inflation-busting increases to university tuition fees. It offers little assistance for students struggling to make ends meet
following the abolition of student grants
and the new Office for Students has no student representation on its board.
The best that the new radical leadership
of NUS could offer in response was a march
that couldnt be heard on the Parliamentary
estate and attracted barely any attention in
the media. Apparently, there was a sit-in in
the Department for Education. Not that anyone seemed to notice.
NUS drift to the hard left has led to a wider
political malaise that has seen a number of
students unions choose to disaffiliate following campus-wide ballots.
A number of university students unions, including Hull, Lincoln and Loughborough have
already chosen to leave. Further ballots may
occur in the autumn, as increasing numbers
of students choose to give up on a union that
they feel has now given up on representing
them.
Many Jewish students are now questioning
their place in NUS. Some Jewish societies
campaigned for their students unions to disaffiliate from NUS. Others may contemplate
joining them when they return to university in
the autumn. This would be a mistake.
Students need a strong national voice
now more than ever. NUS has a proud history
and it has a bright future so long as there are

Jewish students must not

walk away from the NUS
FOLLOWING THE election of Malia Bouattia, the
new president of the National Union of Students
(NUS), my predecessor and I met her. Malia expressed her desire to work with UJS and Jewish
students on the NUS Anti-Racism, Anti-Fascism
(ARAF) campaign. Yet last Monday, when she used
her deciding vote to remove any involvement of
the representative body of Jewish students, UJS,
in choosing who represents them on the ARAF
committee, Malia proved to Jewish students that
she had no interest in working with them, let alone
joining them in the fight against racism and
fascism.
From kicking the National Front off campuses in
the 1970s, to more recently confronting the farright group National Action, UJS and Jewish students have been at the forefront of anti-racism and
anti-fascism work over the past 40 years. In 2002,
UJS and the NUS Black Students Campaign
worked together on the Racism Will Tear Britain
Apart campaign, which united the student movement in the fight against racism and fascism. Today,
we could not be further from such a collaboration.
I know UJS and Jewish students will continue to
fight against racism and fascism. But I also know
that this will be harder in the framework of the
NUS ARAF campaign. When the NUS National Executive Committee voted last week, it pushed
Jewish students further away from the student
movement and it is proving harder for them to justify any involvement in NUS structures. If any cur-
rent or prospective Jewish student has seen the

headlines from last weeks NEC meeting, I cannot
blame them for wanting to steer clear of the student movement.
All too often in recent months, the actions and
rhetoric of some have made NUS an unwelcome
environment for many Jewish people. Why should
Jewish students have to work that bit harder to
have their voices heard? Why should they have to
watch not one, but two, delegates, challenge an
amendment calling on NUS to commemorate
Holocaust Memorial Day officially?
What will it take for the student movement to
wake up and see that Jewish students are being
pushed out? What do Jewish students need to do
for the student movement to stand shoulder to
shoulder with them? For too long, Jewish students
have been left to fight this battle alone.
Despite 57 J-Soc presidents highlighting their
concerns with Malias past rhetoric, including her
use of terms such as Zionist lobby and Zionistled media, 372 delegates still voted for her. That
is more concerning; it shows a willingness to dismiss Jewish students concerns about someone
who has said things that are questionable at best.
Why is it that when Jewish students raise concerns about anti-Semitism, these concerns are
swept under the carpet? There seems to be a very
literal hierarchy of oppression within the student
movement and Jewish students couldnt be further down the pecking order.
However, precisely because of what has happened in the past six months within NUS, it could
not be more important for Jewish students to get
involved in the student movement and in NUS.
Jewish students still have many friends in the
movement who are willing to stand up for them
and will always stand with them in the fight against
hate and intolerance.
Almost 500 students and sabbatical officers
signed the open letter to Malia Bouattia; NUS does
have a policy that commits itself to combating antiSemitism and officially commemorate Holocaust
Memorial Day; the vice president (Society and Citizenship) Rob Young, who is to start work with Jewish
students and on Jewish student experiences on UK
campuses, was one of two full-time officers who
stood with Jewish students last Monday in their fight
to choose who represents them on the ARAF
committee.
As Hillel once said: If I am not for myself, who
is for me? Jewish students need to be in the room
to effect change and stand up for their interests.
Hillel also said: If not now, when? Now is the time
for Jewish students to get involved, engage with
NUS and the student movement and make sure
that they are represented on a national scale.
Last weeks NEC meeting showed that many are
unwilling to listen to our concerns. However, I know
that despite parts of the student movement continuing to try to push some Jewish students out,
we will continue to push back that much harder.

Speak up for the democratic

and tolerant Israel we love
WHEN I MOVED back to London from Israel last
year, I knew there would be moments Id find really
hard to miss. One such moment was Thursday
nights March for Pride and Tolerance in memory
of Shira Banki in Jerusalem.
The tens of thousands of Israelis who came out
to celebrate freedom and tolerance in Jerusalem
created together a brief and beautiful moment of
victory not just for the LGBTQ community but indeed for all lovers of Israel who cherish the values
of liberalism and democracy. The joy of this victory
shone out in photos, videos and on social media.
The 25,000 marchers on Thursday night constituted a grand triumph against the vile discourse of
hatred and division being sown by the right-wing
forces that have conquered Israels political and
religious institutions.
As Uri Banki, father of murdered teenager Shira
declared at the march: Many deny or ignore the
direct connection between impassioned discourse,
hateful, condescending and blind confidence and
uncompromising self-righteousness and murder.
His plea to the marchers reached beyond his
personal pain to defend what his daughter had believed in: Dont let hate, ignorance and prejudice
wash you away get up and stand for your rights
to live in a tolerant and moderate society.
It is a real shame Jerusalems mayor Nir Barkat
was not able to summon the political strength to
magnify this message and clearly state that the city
of Jerusalem embraces the values of tolerance and

moderation. He shamefully chose instead to swell
support for the dark messages of homophobia
promulgated by Rabbi Levinstein and the 250
Israeli rabbis who publicly endorsed them. But
Jerusalem voted with its feet. As I participated vicariously through Facebook, the open and hopeful
face of Jerusalem gleefully fought back, the citys
beautiful diversity asserting itself in all its glory.
For me, highlights included a video posted by
a friend of revellers at the march largely overtly
religious but not exclusively joyfully dancing the
hora to religious music and waving rainbow flags
in Jerusalems Paris Square. Within the context of
the dire polarisation in Israeli society fanned by
voices such as that of Barkat, who claimed the
march would offend religious people this exuberant and spontaneous expression of Jewish joy at
Gay Pride was a moment much larger than itself.
But the principle of freedom of expression
a sacrosanct tenet of any democracy is under
threat in Israel. The Knesset has just passed two
laws that chip deep dents into Israelis right to critique or counter government policy and dominant
world views. The passing on 11 July of the NGO
law which will place extraneous reporting requirements on organisations receiving more than 50
percent of their budgets from foreign state entities was the culmination of a dedicated smear
campaign against human rights organisations that
has broadly succeeded in tarnishing in the publics

eye these champions of justice as representing
foreign interests.
And the Suspension Law passed less than a
week later which will allow a majority of 90 Knesset members to suspend an elected lawmaker for
views expressed threatens the very principle of
freedom of political debate. In an uncharacteristically fiery Knesset speech, Zionist Camp MK Tzipi
Livni declared during the debate: This collection
of laws, of which [the Suspension Law] is one, are
taking Israel to a dark place all of this is being
done in a manner which is destroying everything
that everyone from all strands of society worked to
build here over all these years.
Democracy is a fragile thing, and the extremist
forces wallowing in power in Israels political and
religious institutions are pushing the country perilously close to a democratic tipping point. Last
Thursdays march was a glorious moment for lovers
of Israeli democracy, but we all need to be vigilant
because, as Israeli singer Achinoam Nini so
poignantly put it in a New Israel Fund podcast, we
are in a battle for the soul of the state of Israel.
Deputy Jerusalem Mayor Meir Turgeman has
already announced his intention to ensure there will
be no Pride march in Jerusalem next year. All of us
who think there should indeed must be one,
need to place our stake in this battle and speak out
for the Israel and the Jerusalem in which we believe.

Kotel to Knesset for packed Israel trip

A delegation of young professionals heard from a whos who of Israeli political, military
and religious leaders during a packed four-day visit to the region. Jewish Agency chair
Natan Sharansky, Jerusalem affairs minister Zeev Elkin and one-time ambassador to
America Michael Oren spoke as part of the latest tour organised by the Centre for
Jewish Life. The London-based group of high-flyers from the worlds of finance, property
and law also visited Rachels Tomb during a visit to Hebron and enjoyed a Friday night
dinner with young soldiers at the home of Pamela and Aba Claman in the Old City.
Rabbi Yosef Vogel, who heads CJL with his brother Mendy, said: This trip exposed
participants to the complexities of challenges facing Israel and offered an insight into the
enormous sacrifices by many Israelis, particularly its soldiers. This had a profound impact
on their understanding of the issues and created a deeper sense of connection with
Israel. We hope those who took part will become more effective advocates for Israel
among their business and social networks and create projects to enhance the
relationship between Jews in Israel and the diaspora. Among the others addressing the
group were Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, David Keyes, the Israeli premiers new foreign
media spokesman and Saul Singer, co-author of Start-Up Nation. Participant Sam Cohen
said the emotionally exhausting and spiritually reinvigorating trip was a powerful
reminder of how much we have to be proud of. The packed programme was devised
together with Vladimir Bermant.

prepares exceptional performers for a career on world

FROM RIVALRY TO REUNION

A thought-provoking
documentary brings
runners Mary Decker
and Zola Budd together
for the first time in 30
years. Francine Wolfisz
meets the films Jewish
director and producer
hey both could have had such gloriously rewarding lives and yet at
every point, life just decided they
were going to take a dark path.
Reflecting on his latest documentary,
The Fall, producer John Battsek contemplates just how different things could
have been for two of the worlds top
athletes in 1984 Zola Budd and Mary
Decker had one of the most controversial moments in sporting history never
occurred.
South African-born Budd, who was
representing Britain and famously ran
barefoot, spectacularly collided with
American favourite Decker in the
womens 3,000m race during the 1984
Olympics in Los Angeles.
In one fateful moment, Decker fell to
the ground while Budd, reacting to a
hostile crowd, dropped behind the rest
of the pack, shattering the gold medalwinning dreams of both women.
Now, more than 30 years later,
Battsek and director Daniel Gordon
have reunited Decker and Budd and
retraced the events leading up to the
day that would leave the pair inextricably linked forever.
Battsek, who picked up Academy
Awards for One Day In September,
a documentary examining the murder of
11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics
in Munich and Searching For Sugar Man,
has worked with Gordon over the past
15 years.
Notably, the Jewish director and producer have a penchant for making
sports-related documentaries with
human-interest stories at their core.
Most recently, they received wide attention for their hard-hitting documentary,
Hillsborough, which aired on the BBC
earlier this year.

Inevitably sport has an organic and

inherent dramatic element to it, so
theres always great drama in most
sporting events, explains Battsek,
executive producer at Passion Pictures.
But sporting drama is just one level
of what makes these films so powerful.
All of them have this magic ingredient,
which enables them to transcend that
dramatic sporting story and become
about a number of things bigger than
just that. You can be completely disinterested in long-distance running, but
go and see The Fall, because its also
about childhood, parenting, politics,
growing up and the struggles of life.
The film, which airs on Sky Atlantic
tomorrow night, reveals the poignant
and at times, tragic moments that Budd

and Decker endured during their formative years.
For Budd, her life started out on
a small farm outside the city of Bloemfontein, where she was kept largely sheltered from the unsavoury politics of
apartheid ravaging her country.
She was very close to her sister, Jenny,
who tragically died aged 24, from an
adverse reaction to chemotherapy for a
tumour.
After that, the young sportswoman
poured her anger into running, and at
17, achieved fame by breaking the
womens 5,000m world record previously held by Decker by six seconds.
But the International Amateur Athletics Association refused to ratify her time
because of the sporting boycott against
South Africa a boycott that also
stopped Budd from competing at the
Olympics.
To get around this problem, the
young teenager was persuaded by a
lucrative deal with the Daily Mail and her
overbearing father to adopt British
nationality and compete for Great
Britain. But on arrival in the UK, she was
greeted with hostility by apartheid campaigners. Often the crowd could be
heard jeering and booing at times,
even spitting in her face as Budd made
her way around the track.
In the film, Budd maintains that her
naive upbringing meant she knew little
about apartheid and claimed not
to know who Nelson Mandela was a
sticking point for protesters who claimed
she was lying and wanted to hold her up
as the poster girl for racist South Africa.
Even Battsek admits he was incredulous about Budds ignorance of the
issue. But then I asked some of my
South African friends, given how Zola

Budd grew up, if this could be true and
they categorically said it could.
This girl didnt even know what it was
she was being spat at for. She lived in
a community where those people
werent in the newspapers and she was
simply unaware of Mandelas existence
in any way, shape or form.
In contrast, Decker appeared to have
the perfect, all-American childhood. By
the time she was 14, she was already
recognised as a world-class runner and
had the world at her feet.
But things did not go to plan. On a
professional level, she found herself too
young to enter the 1972 Olympics, too
injured to compete in 1976 and disappointed again in 1980, when the US
boycotted the Olympics in Moscow.
In her personal life, all was not well
either. When her parents separated,
Deckers father rebuffed any attempts to
stay involved. He said I didnt need
attention, because I already had the
attention of the world, says Decker.
When one of her mothers new
boyfriends became abusive, the devastated teenager packed her bags and left
home.
What becomes clear as The Fall progresses is that the personal hardships of
both young women propelled them
towards becoming the greatest athletes
of their time.
The striking parallels are ones
that have not escaped Gordon, who
describes the similarities as incredible.
But equally the Sheffield-based producer was surprised to discover that
Budd and Decker knew relatively little
about one another before agreeing to
take part in the documentary and were
not due to see the film until just a few
days before its release this week.

I just cant help thinking what will it
be like when they both see the film,
adds Battsek. You can already see how
they look at each other in a different way
having shared bits of experience, but I
suspect youll find when the film ends
theyll be all over each other.
In some ways thats one of the most
rewarding parts of this process. For the
contributors, the project has this really
profound, cathartic and healing effect
on them, which is always a joy to
behold.
By the films end, the pair both now
in their 50s are reunited for the first
time in more than 30 years. While the
emotions surrounding their famous duel
at the 1984 Olympics are evidently
still raw, there is certainly a sense of
reconciliation.
For Battsek, their reunion is perhaps
the sweetest ending to a bittersweet
story.
He adds: The thing that I feel most
profoundly about them and their story is
just the randomness of life. They were
both so close to success and yet at every
point they ended up with the exact
opposite. The aspect of fate is so delicate
and seems so unfair for these two girls.
Her former coach calls Decker the
greatest American athlete of all time
but you wouldnt know it, because she
never really got to reap the rewards of
that. Equally for Zola, it could have been
such a triumphant life, but because of
the politics, her father and the Daily
Mail, she was just miserable. I find that
profoundly moving.
The Fall airs on Sky Atlantic tomorrow
(Friday) at 9pm and will be released in
Picturehouse Cinemas nationwide

the tragic fate of Jewish sporting
heroes during the Holocaust
hether they were Jewish soldiers who fought for their country during the First World War, or Jewish Olympians who
found glory for their country, I have often wondered how
many erroneously assumed their medals would protect them in the
Shoah. The fact that they had proudly risked their lives fighting for
their homeland or had achieved sporting greatness was irrelevant
when the Nuremberg Laws were enforced.
Not for the first time in writing my book, Who Betrayed The
Jews?, I found myself shocked by discovering the fate of more than
30 Jewish Olympic medallists and sportsmen who had won medals
for their country, but were exterminated without a thought when
the Nazi juggernaut ploughed on with The Final Solution.
Gerrit Kleerekoper (18971943) was the Jewish coach of the Dutch
gymnastics team at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, where they won gold.
On 2 July 1943, Gerrit Kleerekoper, along with his wife, Kaatje, and his
14-year-old daughter, Elisabeth, were murdered by the Nazis at the
Sobibor extermination camp in Poland. Twenty-nine days later, his
18-year-old son, Leendert, was murdered at Auschwitz.
Helena Lea Nordheim (19031943) was a Dutch gymnast born in
Amsterdam. She won the gold medal with the rest of the Dutch gymnastics team at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. She was
sent to Camp Westerbork in June 1943, and shortly after was deported
to Sobibor, where she was murdered with her husband, Abraham, and
their 10-year-old daughter, Rebecca, on 2 July 1943.
Anna (Ans) Dresden-Polak (19061943) was also on the team. At the
1928 Olympics, about half of the Dutch womens gymnastics team was
Jewish, but only one member, Elka de Levie, survived the Holocaust.
Dresden-Polak was killed at Sobibor with her six-year-old daughter, Eva,
on 23 July 1943. Her husband, Barend, was killed at Auschwitz in 1944.
Judikje Jud Simons (19041943) was a third Jewish member of the
1928 Dutch womens gymnastics team and Olympic gold medallist.
After her Olympics career Simons married and, with her husband, ran
an orphanage in Utrecht, housing and caring for more than 80 needy
children. As the Nazis rounded up Dutch Jews and sent them to concentration camps, Jud and her husband
refused to abandon the
orphans who depended
on them. The Nazis captured her and her family, all
of whom were shipped to
the Sobibor extermination
camp and gassed on 3
March 1943.

and in 1926 she and her teammates achieved a world record
in the 4 x

her brother and her 66-year-old mother were deported. She and her mother are believed to have
been taken from the Riga Ghetto and
machine-gunned to death by an Einsatzgruppen
mobile killing unit later the same year, along with
a large number of other Jews. They were all
buried in a mass grave in the woods outside Riga.
Attila Petschauer (19041943), another Hungarian, won silver in Amsterdam in 1928 and gold in
Los Angeles in 1932. During a routine check in
1943 he realised he had left some of his ID papers
at home and was soon deported to the Davidovka labour camp in Ukraine. One of the people
responsible, Kalman Cseh, a Hungarian Army Attila Petschauer
colonel, was a fellow member of the Hungarian
delegation
to
the
1928
Games.
Cseh
referred
to him as the Jew and told his subordinates to give him a bad time.
Another Olympian Karoly Karpate, a Hungarian wrestler, said that one
day, when he was digging in temperatures below zero, the guards told
Attila to take off his clothes and climb a tree and crow
like a rooster. They sprayed him with cold water which
froze and eventually he fell off the tree. They took him
back to the barracks but he died a few hours later on
20 January 1943, aged 39.
Eddy Hamel (19021943) was born in New York to

immigrant Dutch-Jewish parents, and returned to Holland as a child. He played for the Men from the Meer

He was forced to participate in boxing matches for the
amusement of the Nazis. By 1945, Victor had survived 140
bouts in 15 months and won 139. Perez was one of the
prisoners on the death march that left the camp on 18
January 1945. He died on the march on 22 January 1945,
aged 33.
Andras Szekely (19091943) was a Hungarian swimmer
who won Olympic silver (200m breaststroke) and bronze
(4 x 200m freestyle relay). In the 1932 Olympics, he won
a bronze medal in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay event. He
was also fifth in his semi-final of the 100m freestyle.
Szekely died in a Nazi forced labour camp.
And lastly
The first Jewish victim from the Olympics was not a
competitor. Wolfgang Furstner (18961936) is virtually unknown today. He was the former commandant of
the Olympic village, who committed suicide on
18 August only two days after the 1936
Olympics in Berlin finished. The German press
were told to say he had been killed in a car accident but the foreign journalists discovered
the truth and broke the story. Furstner had
been found to be a Mischling.

hen Carmella Gordon popped a small

pack of plastic food covers into her
shopping trolley while on holiday
in Florida, little did she realise they would
become a significant part of a business
proposition.
The food covers,
called CoverMate, are
similar to shower caps
and stretch-to-fit food
containers, plates or individual items.
Gordon, now the director of Kitchen Table, which
has the distribution rights of
the products in the UK and
Ireland, describes them as
one of the most useful items
in your kitchen that you never
knew you needed.
I was on holiday two years
ago in Florida with Hayley Allan,
one of my oldest friends, and on
the last day I was in Publix supermarket, which is like a Tesco, Gordon recalls.
Im always looking for products that you
cant buy here and I was in the cling film
aisle and saw a green package right at the bottom of the shelf CoverMate and put it in my
basket.
Hayley said: I love these and Ive never
seen them before. So I bought a few packs,
thought nothing of it and came home. Then my
husband actually said: Oh Carmella, I love
this its so easy and brilliant.
Back in the UK, Gordon thought she would
buy some more packs but, when she looked
online, she couldnt find them on sale here.
Her husband suggested she see if she could
bring them over and, despite being a bit reticent at first, she contacted Touch Industries,
the Canadian company that owned the
product.
The company agreed and Kitchen Table,
which Gordon founded in November 2014 with
three other friends and family members Allan,
Allans cousin Claudia, and Amanda Cannon
was given sole distribution rights.
Approaching Lakeland as a potential
stockist, Gordon was
at first told over the
phone that it was not a
suitable product.
She insisted it was
and, not taking no
for an answer I knew
it definitely was a
Lakeland product!
Gordon, then 47 and
a freelance make-up
artist, pressed for a
meeting, travelling the
five hours up to
Cumbria to prove it.
The Lakeland representative then agreed
that the food-safe polyethylene
covers, which are twice the thickness of standard plastic wrap, were of interest.
CoverMate, which is BPA and PVC free, had
to go through stringent testing, after which it
was accepted into Lakeland in January and
then into Waitrose and Ocado, plus Yummies,
Silvermans and Orlis on repeat orders.
We launched it with no advertising budget
and very little capital, but we all put all our
expertise into it, Gordon says.
It is now one of the bestselling products
in Lakeland it sells on average between
1,500 and 1,800 CoverMate packs a week
and Waitrose has done an article on
it, she adds proudly, pleased that she fought
her corner.
CoverMate is something you didnt realise
you needed in your kitchen. Its so easy to use,
says the mother-of-two.
People struggle with cling film and it never
sticks properly to anything, but this opens up
easily and fits to any shaped dish. Its brilliant
for people of all ages people at university,
older people and those with arthritis.
You can wash or throw it away. You can put
it in the dishwasher on average you can use
it between four and six times and in the
microwave, too.
She adds: People who are very religious are
not allowed to cut cling film on Shabbat, and
many of them use CoverMate because then
they dont have to cut anything.
And theres nothing like it on the market
no similar product. For the price of it 1.99
for a pack of eight in three sizes: small, medium

and large its a no-brainer.
The partners are no strangers to setting up
organisations. The Allans were among the
founding members 13 years ago of the Rays of
Sunshine organisation, which is now one of the
countrys leading wish-granting charities for terminally and seriously ill children between the
ages of three and 18. Cannon, meanwhile, was
senior vice-president of womens clothing
brand Juicy Couture.
Gordon is rightly proud of what the group
have achieved.
We went from nothing to having our product stocked in major retailers. We are four
housewives trying to make a mark, and in the
future wed like to take on more products.

Natasha Blair goes on a

search for her roots and
uncovers a part of Poland
filled with Jewish heritage
efore the Second World War,

around 120,000 Jews lived in the
south-eastern part of Poland in
the Podkarpackie region, bordering
Slovakia and Ukraine.
Sadly, there are now very few Jewish
inhabitants, but evidence of their onceburgeoning existence can be seen
everywhere.
I travelled to Rzeszw, the capital of
the region, by Ryanair to begin my
exploration and found in a small park
behind the main square a monumental
sculpture, The Transgression, by Josef
Szajna, which marks the place where
the Jewish ghetto used to be.
There are three buildings all near to
one another that used to be synagogues. One of them, dating from the
17th century, has been renovated and
is now the citys art gallery.
By its side, a grassed park with trees
marks the site of a Jewish cemetery.
A large stone bears a plaque commemorating the fact the gravestones
were removed during the Communist
era to pave the local roads.
Many Polish families hid Jewish people during the events of 1939-45, and
their memorial is tucked away in the
tiny village of Marowa.
This is the site of the Ulma Family
Museum of Poles Saving Jews in World
War Two, which opened in March complete with a monument dedicated to

Holocaust victims, while nameplates
fixed to the pavement and a wall of
remembrance commemorate the many
Poles who took part in the campaign
help to save Jewish lives.
Inside, the displays include memorabilia from Jzef and Wiktoria Ulma,
after whom the museum is named and
who ultimately lost their lives for providing shelter to eight Jews.
The Ulmas were posthumously
named in 1995 as Righteous Among
the Nations.
At one time or another, every town
in Poland had a castle. A particularly
fine example is at Lancut, whose 17th
century fortress has been left largely
unscathed by war.
Inside the entrance is a large menorah, a gift from the local Jewish community, while the interior is furnished
with original items and feels as if
people are still living there.
Like all visitors, we had to cover our
shoes to protect the parquet floors, the
marquetry of which was different in
each room. Another particularly
impressive feature was the library, with
thousands of leather-bound books
lining its shelves.
Although there are no Jews left in

Lancut, the Chassidic synagogue built

in 1761 has been preserved. It is
looked after by Miroslaw Kedzior, who
is not Jewish but says he feels an
affiliation to the Jewish community.
The synagogue doesnt look anything special from the outside, but
inside is a different story as visitors are
confronted by a Baroque interior.
One of the most important tzadiks of
Chasidism, Jacob Isaac Horowitz, had
a room here where he prayed, studied
and had discussions with other Chasidim. His room is maintained together
with some of the broken pieces of
gravestones that have been rescued.
Lancuts synagogue forms part of the
Chassidic Route, a tourist trail that
takes visitors in the footsteps of the
Jewish communities that were once
found through south-eastern Poland.
Twenty-nine communities are involved in the project, which is another
of the ways in which the Jewish history
of the country is being preserved.
Our next destination was reached
via a new type of bicycle that seats four
people, with two cycling and two

sitting behind, that travels along an old
disused railway line.
Along the track, I cycled the two
kilometers needed to reach the brewery of URSA Maior, which specialises in
unpasteurised beers.
Rejwach na Kazimierzu, a beer made
for their pub in Kazimerz, the Jewish
quarter of Krakw, has a label which
has been designed to look as if the
words are written in Hebrew.
Our next stop was Sanok, where the
open-air Museum of Folk Architecture
has more than 150 wooden buildings
dating from the 17th to 20th centuries.
A minimum of two-and-a-half hours is
needed to appreciate this interesting
venue fully.
A Galician market square with the
interiors of the houses and shops recreated to look like those from the turn of
the 19th century has been established
and includes two Jewish houses.
Another feature, an 18th centurystyle synagogue, is also currently under
construction.

say about...

Today DOPING IN SPORTS

IT IS a Jews job to behave uprightly
and honestly to the utmost of their
ability. One should always be honest
in ones dealings and not seek to
deceive others. The rabbis state that
our yes should mean yes and our no
should mean no.
It is a misconception that the Torah
tells us we are not allowed to lie in the
Ten Commandments. That particular
commandment is about court evidence. The prohibition on dishonesty
is to be found later, in Leviticus 19:11.
The rabbis tell us that dishonesty
extends even to messing around with
a person to get them to think something for a joke.
The term for this is geneivat daat in English deception, or literally stealing their understanding. This is
derived from Jacobs deception of
Laban, and Absalom his father David.
The origin of the term is attributed
to the Talmudic sage Samuel, who
lived in Nehardea, who states in
Chullin (94a): It is forbidden to mis-
lead people, even a non-Jew.

The Talmudic even is notable.
Deception of anyone is prohibited. Indeed, in business situations the rabbis
give examples of how straightforward
we must be, to the extent that if we
buy an item and discover another
more valuable item to be concealed
within it, we must return the more
valuable item to its rightful owner.
Among ourselves, we are only
allowed to make a profit of one sixth
over the cost of an item.
Of course, cheating in exams falls
under this prohibition, because you
are lying about your qualifications.
Recently another, more modern
form of dishonesty has been uncovered: taking drugs in athletics.
The whole Russian team appears
to be suspect. The International
Olympics Committee considered
banning all the Russian competitors,
which would have been a reasonable
penalty. Unfortunately it changed its
mind. This could have the result of
throwing suspicion over many competitors, and has caused untold
damage to the competitions in which
they participate.
The deception here is com-
pounded by the health risks. Drugs

are often used to disguise heavy use
of steroids, which can take high tolls
on health.
We are forbidden from intentionally
damaging ourselves. At one point,
the gymnastic teams of Romania and
Bulgaria took the disgusting step of
getting young girl gymnasts pregnant
to enhance their flexibility.
The morality of such an act is utterly
reprehensible, no matter how scientifically administered, not to mention
the physical and psychological effects.
The implications of cheating in
sport are very serious, as the drugs
may well seriously alter the result of
the event, and this has bearing on the
whole business of sport and on the
practice of betting on the results.
The greatest damage, though, of
this most recent scandal appears to
have been to athletics in general. The
good name of the sport, the damage
done to the name of Russian athletics
and, of course, the suspicions raised
against all the medallists over the past
eight years, are all reasons why this
dishonesty is utterly prohibited.

THE SAGES of the Mishnah debated

which is the most important verse
in the Torah. Rabbi Akiva opens the
discussion by invoking the golden rule
Love your fellow as yourself (Vayikra
19:18).
Ben Azai, however suggests on
the day that God created man, He
made him in His Image (Bereshit 5:1).
Ben Zoma goes for the well-known
declaration of faith Shema Yisrael
(Devarim 6:4), whereas Ben Nanas also
casts his vote for Love your fellow as
yourself (Vayikra 19:18).
Shimon Ben Pazi suggests a more
inclusive verse from our sedra: The
first lamb you shall sacrifice in the
morning and the second lamb you shall
sacrifice in the evening. (Shemot 29:39
and Bamidbar 28:4).
The debate concludes with Rabbi
Ploni standing up and declaring that
the halacha is in accordance with Ben
Pazi.
This is a fascinating debate whose
conclusion seems rather odd.
Most of the contenders for the top
spot are the usual suspects and the winner is the rank outsider. What is Ben
Pazi teaching us with his verse?

Perhaps he is teaching us that love of
our fellow, seeing humanity as being
created in the image of God and declaring our belief in one God are indeed
central themes in Judaism. However, if
they are not put into practice in a consistent fashion, then they lose their
value.
Ben Pazis verses are talking about
the daily sacrifices that took place
every morning and every evening without fail, the bedrock of the service in
the Temple.
This is not just a message for religious observance. Rather, the Torah is
teaching us a lesson for life.
Consistency allows for measurement
of achievements; it creates accountability and establishes ones reputation.
When we are clear with what we
expect from ourselves, people know
what to expect from us.
Of course, there is always room for
flexibility and spontaneity, and in the
Temple, there were additional Mussaf
offerings on special days and free will
offerings that could be brought as one
wished.
However, these were secondary to
the constant daily offering.
This week we marked the fast of the
17th of Tammuz.
One of the reasons the fast was
established was because on that day
the daily sacrifice ceased during the
period of the destruction of the
Temple.
While we do not have the ability
to fulfil the mitzvah, we certainly can
internalise its message.

SOMETIME IN the years following the

destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE,
a group of poets sat down to write a collection of mournful lamentations. Through
their eyes, we see the ravaged city of
Jerusalem as a bereaved and abandoned
woman, her children dying of hunger on
street corners, her maidens and youths
murdered.
These dirges eventually formed the text
for Tisha BAv, a public day of mourning
and fasting, commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples, as
well as other tragedies throughout Jewish
history.
As we become witnesses, in our own
time, to the great catalogue of death
and destruction most recently in France,
Belgium, Copenhagen, Tunisia, Iraq, Turkey,
the United States and Syria, including the
drowning of hundreds of refugees as they
cross the perilous waters of the Mediterranean Sea how do we prevent the hardening of our hearts?
How do we ensure that we do not
become desensitised to terrorism and
violence?
Like the retelling of the Exodus from
Egypt, Tisha BAv became a vehicle
for memory reliving the catastrophe of
a people terrorised, tortured and forced

into exile. Its imagery and language function like a hand-held camera, designed
to show us and allowing us to hear every
intimate detail of suffering, to evoke
a sense of horror, sorrow, empathy and
compassion.
And like the martyrology in the liturgy for
Yom Kippur, or Yom HaShoah with its revisiting of the loss of six million, we relive
again and again a peoples utter devastation and loss.
These texts and commemorations remind
us of our own vulnerability and through the
awareness of that susceptibility, our feelings are awakened and we hold on to our
frail humanity.
Yet we are not left with the burden of
unrelieved suffering of the present or past,
for it is the repeated blows on the bruised
body that leave the individual numb with
terror and fright.
Yes, we are navigated through the darkness of despair and destruction, but the
architects of our liturgy and poetry do not
lose faith.
They are still prepared to affirm their
faith in the loving kindness and infinite
compassion of God and in so doing, to call
upon our own humanity and compassion for
the suffering of the world.

MARC CHAGALL was born

Moishe Segal in Lionza, near
Vitebsk in the Pale of Settlement, on 24 June 1887, and
was a true hero of our
times.
Born into a deeply religious
Chasidic family, he managed
in his work to cross the line of
religious inhibitions about pictorial religious art by developing a kind of visual metaphor
linked to folk imagery.
His physical journey took
him from Vitebsk to St Petersburg, Paris, Berlin and Soviet
Belarus again, all the time enhancing his painting.
His continued travelling
opened up more vistas of
mysticism and his arrival in
Palestine was, indeed, a
mountain-top experience,
where he would identify with

the early chalutzim (pioneers).
He had found the Bible,
which resonated from then on
through his work. His emotional journey had begun, reinforced when he met his first
wife, Bella Rosenfeld. Of
course, he had to convince
Bellas parents that he was a
worthy shidduch and this must
have contributed to his determination to succeed.
By the time the Second
World War had started, Chagall was no longer in favour
with the Germans.
In 1941, when it was almost
too late, the somewhat naive
Chagalls were helped by a
USA operation to migrate to
America, along with 2,000
other artists and musicians.
Even though, as an adult, he

was no longer a practising Jew,
Chagall always credited his
Russian cultural background as
the source of his art.
Further, he went on to
expand the religious message
by including Jewish and Christian themes.
So what was his legacy, this
hero of the modern world
and my own Jewish hero?
Undoubtedly he was a visionary a citizen of the world
while also recognising his
inner child.
His work reflects the need
for world tolerance and is an
inspiration to us all.
Let us leave the last words
to Chagall himself: My painting represents not the dream
of one people, but of all
humanity.

I understand why you are concerned. Some couples take

longer than a year to conceive naturally and you may be
one of these couples.
Factors contributing to the challenges of infertility may
involve either or both of you. These factors may be medically-based, lifestyle-based or simply unexplainable.
Having taken a medical history, normally your GP would
suggest blood tests to look at your hormone profiles. They
will probably suggest testing your husband and may also
suggest an ultrasound scan (at your local NHS hospital).
Depending on these findings, they will recommend a referral for further investigations with a gynaecologist, urologist
or fertility clinic.
One in six couples experience a fertility challenge. Options
range from cycle monitoring through to assisted reproductive therapy.
Many Jewish couples with fertility concerns feel isolated and
overwhelmed but our support workers available in Borehamwood, north-west London, Stamford Hill or via Skype
can offer medical information and emotional support.

Think about what youd like to do now and whether retraining
is necessary. Talk to as many people as possible to get ideas,

We all communicate differently and naturally connect with people
like us. Individuals who learn to communicate with all types of people generally achieve what they want quicker. Many of my clients
have moved closer to this by using the DISC behavioural profiling
tool which looks at four main types of behavioural style. The styles
and sales tips for each are:
D. Outgoing, fast-paced, guarded, task-focused. They are likely
just to want top-level facts and will forget to say happy birthday or
ask how the wedding was.
Sales tips: Be brief, challenge them and ask for the order. Be
prepared for tough questions and no small talk. Expect a quick
decision.
I. Outgoing, fast-paced, relationship-focused and open. Will answer
questions with at least 500 words and loves being around large
groups.
Sales tips: Will never say no, but will avoid your calls and not go
ahead unless many others like them have bought and they fear
missing out.
S. Reserved, slow-paced, relationship-focused and open. Hates
change and is very shy around new people, finds networking very
scary. Very loyal and the easiest to get along with.
Sales tips: Will buy after a slow decision process if nobody is
adversely effected and there are lots of guarantees.
C. Reserved, slow-paced, task-focused and guarded. These are the
perfectionists, using statistics heavily to drive decision making and
are really scared of being wrong.
Sales tips: Be prepared with lots of statistics, testimonials and
ensure there are no spelling errors.

Piquant Moroccan Chicken Salad
PREPARATION TIME

This flavour-packed Moroccan chicken salad

is perfect for rustling up an impromptu
lunch. With plenty of flavour from tender
artichokes and tangy green olives, this salad
recipe is sure to keep you full until dinner
time. You could swap the chicken for beef or
turkey instead, and the recipe is also a great
way to use up leftovers.
4 teaspoons olive oil

2 teaspoons harissa paste
6 baby courgettes, each sliced into 3 pieces

cling film and bash with a rolling pin until the

meat is about 1cm thick.
Rub two teaspoons of oil over the chicken,
then the harissa paste. Heat a griddle pan until
very hot. Rub the rest of the oil over the courgette slices and griddle until tender.
Griddle the breasts for three to four minutes
on each side (or steam in a steam oven for five
minutes on 100C.)
Take out of the pan and wrap in foil to keep
warm. Griddle the slices of ciabatta.
Divide the salad leaves, ciabatta, courgettes,
artichokes and olives between four plates.
Slice the chicken and arrange on top.
Whisk three tablespoons of oil from the pack
of artichokes with the balsamic vinegar and
drizzle over the salad.
Scatter with chives.
4 slices of ciabatta
100g lettuce leaves/rocket
180g jar artichokes in oil drained but retain
3 tablespoons for dressing
16 green olives pitted
Dressing:
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
Pinch of sugar
Handful of chives or wild garlic if available

Part three of our preview to the Rio Olympics looks at Israels

judo fighters, cyclists, synchronised swimmers and sailors
ISRAEL WILL have seven judokas at the
Games the joint-second highest number of
athletes in any of the 16 sports theyre entering.
Ori Sasson, who will be fighting in the
100+kg event, claimed one of the best wins
of his career in the final warm-up tournament
for Rio when he won silver at the 2016 World
Judo Masters championships in Mexico.
The 25-year-old, who also claimed silver at
last years European Games, said: It was one
of the most significant achievements of my
career so far and of course, Im always
happy to represent this country every
single time. Im proud to be part of a
team of such quality, and with my
team, including coach and personal
trainers, am looking forward to the
Olympics.
Golan Pollack (U66kg), who won
bronze at last years World Championships, will be looking for a better showing than four years ago in
London when he lost in the first round,
while Sagi Muki (U73kg), for whom this
will be his first Olympics, won Israels first
gold medal at last years European Games.
On the female side, Israel have in Yarden
Gerbi, a former world champion. Aware of
how fast a match can be decided, she says:
The competition in judo can end very fast,
you can lose and win in one second but my
main thing is to fight each moment on the
mat and to be the best I can, to be strongminded, and I believe in myself. The 27year-old became the first Israeli to win gold
at the World Championships three years ago

in the U63kg category the same one shell

bronze medallist at last years European
Games, has won the Israeli championship five
times and was a silver medalist in the 2009
Maccabiah Games. Shiri Rishony (U48kg), Gili

the Scottish Road Race

to finish in second place, she
insists age is no barrier, recently being quoted as saying:
After Rio we must look ahead
to Tokyo 2020.
Haimy will be taking part in the
cross country event, having finished in 18th
place at last years European Games. Taking
up the sport as a 12-year-old, he says: Crosscountry Olympic mountain biking has always
been close to my heart. The physical and
technical requirements, together with the
connection of nature and the machine connects perfect for me.
Anastasia Gloushkov and Evgenia Tetelbaum will be taking to the pool as a duet for
the synchronised swimming event.

Gloushkov definitely has experience on
her side, with this being her fourth
Olympiad, though Tetelbaum, who
moved to Israel from Ukraine in 2009, will
be taking part in her first.
The pair have been in Florida for their
final preparations, with Tetelbaum saying: Its very exciting. Its been my goal
all my [sporting] life to be in the Olympic
Games, I have a lot of emotions inside,
but I have to keep them until I have my
best performance.
Sailing has provided Israels only
Olympic gold medal when Gal
Fridman won the mens sailboard
event in Athens in 2004. Twelve
years later, there are six sailors
hoping to follow in his footsteps.
Shahar Zubari is the only athlete
in this squad to have an Olympic
medal to his name, having won
bronze in the RS:X event in 2008.
With further gold medal wins in
RSX European Championships to his
name, he will though be looking for an
improvement on his 19th place finish in
London four years ago. Dan Froyliche and
Eyal Levin are taking part in the 470 event.

ONE OF six new teams entering the MGBSFL next
season has been told by the
London Football Association (LFA) they cant call
themselves

offensive.
The team played under the
same name four years ago.

Hamme explained: We rejoined the league this year
and asked the LFA for the
same name. But they refused
because they believed the
term 'chutzpah' was offensive
for some reason. They researched the word on google
and apparently didn't like
what they saw.

Olympic delegation thanks to
a registration mistake by the
Belarus national team.
The swimmer (pictured) had
