Opening this week on a somber
note. As many of you who
knew him know, area resident
Jack Hayes passed on.
Although not close friends, I
can say we were friends. In

that could be described as
badass except maybe his

Tech Tips, Talk & Advice For Your Computer

Today we have to use the internet for just about all of our personal business, from banking
and shopping to downloading
files.

If you connect to the Internet,

allow other people to use your
computer, or share files with
others, you should take steps to
protect your computer from
harm. Why? Because there are
computer criminals (sometimes
called hackers) who attack
other peoples computers.
These people can attack directly, by breaking into your computer through the Internet and
stealing your personal information, or indirectly, by creating
malicious software to harm
your computer.
Passwords should be changed
at least every month and do not
use the same password for all
the web sites or programs you
need a password for. Install a

like

to create and manage all your
passwords.

You can protect yourself by taking a few simple precautions;

here are some tools to help you
do that.

Dear Friends, Do you ever wonder if God

is there? If He hears your prayers? If He
sees you in the midst of the millions of people on
the planet? Does He even know you exist? The
answer is YES! Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded
you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be
terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD
your God will be with you wherever you go."
Romans 8:2839 And we know that in all things
God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose.
For those God foreknew he also predestined to be
conformed to the image of his Son, that he might
be the first born among many brothers and
sisters. And those he predestined, he also called;
those he called, he also justified; those he
justified, he also glorified. Read the Bible. God
bless you.

I Love Collaboration__________________

I love collaboration. Its a way to maximize and multiply the

reach of your work, allows you to access skills and expertise you
otherwise dont have, and builds and reinforces the communities,
partnerships and friendships around you. I see its positive effect
all over---from the communities I work with, to businesses I frequent, to the organizations I meet. Collaboration can, and often
does, work.

This past June, I was fortunate to go to a national joint conference

of university extension community development professionals
and natural resource professionals. Together we gathered in
Burlington, Vermont for four days of peer-to-peer learning, sharing, and networking. At the event, my own University of New
Hampshire team, was honored with an award in programming
excellence and one of the programs Ive been co-developing, the
1st Impressions Program, with my colleague Casey Hancock, was
presented at two workshops! But it wasnt the cool award or multiple presentations at a national conference that really wowed me,
it was the collaborative spirit of natural resource professionals
and community development professionals coming together. It
was the boots-on-the-ground development of professional relationships and partnerships between a diversity of folks from
across the nation. It was the back-of-the-napkin project idea and
collaboration generation happening over lunch or a quick bite to
eat. It was the development of community, development of collaboration, development of friendships that truly impressed me.

Collaboration can work, and when its done right, it can spark
innovation and expand capacity. My own collaborative efforts
have given me the ability to offer new and innovative programming and access a wealth of academic and experiential knowledge that immediately lend themselves to the questions, challenges and opportunities of our region. I simply cannot do it all
on my own, nor would I want to. Are you with me? Are you, partner?

BUSINESS ADVICE

A second lead-poisoned loon

was found on Cold Spring Pond
in Stoddard, NH, on July 6.
This male loon had been captured and released on July 1 in
the course of routine banding.
Blood tests conducted the following day revealed high lead
levels, and Loon Preservation
Committee (LPC) staff and volunteers began monitoring the
pond closely. The loon was
found deceased on Wednesday,
but it likely died over the weekend. A necropsy performed on
July 11 showed a lead jig and
fishing line in the loons gizzard.

July and August are when leadpoisoned loons are most often
found, which correlates with
peak lake use and fishing in
New Hampshire. The NH Fish
and Game Department and the
LPC urge anglers to stop using
lead tackle to protect loons and
other lake wildlife. Poisoning
from lead fishing tackle is the
leading cause of adult loon
mortality in New Hampshire.
According to the LPC, the loss
of so many adults from this preventable cause of mortality has
inhibited the recovery of loons
in New Hampshire.
