SO LONG, SEARS
Story by Kurt Christian | Photos by Jeremy Hogan

Open since March of 1965, the Sears store at the Melvin Simon
& Associates College Mall started out as one of two anchors within
the property; it closed its doors early this week for the final time.

stores closure.

the now defunct Bloomington location.

ears pre-dated the malls second anchor,

H.P. Wasson and Company, by five months.
It opened in a larger space at 56,000
square feet to Wassons 35,000 and
it outpaced its counterpart in growth.
One year after the introduction of competitor
Wal-Mart, Sears underwent a major remodeling

project in 1993 that increased the stores footprint

to 68,000 square feet.
Paired with Sears absence is the impending
closure of its east side sister store, Kmart. Of the
52 workers employed by Sears in March of this
year, eligible workers were offered severance and
the opportunity to apply for open positions at

other Sears or area Kmart stores.

The future of the College Mall location has
already been decided. An affordable version of the
national Whole Foods brand, called 365 by Whole
Foods, is anticipated to open its doors in the fall of
2017.

David Schwimmer stars in AMCs new series Feed the Beast.

Schwimmer takes
less friendly role
in Feed the Beast

By Lorraine Ali
Los Angeles Times

You knew him as Ross of

Friends, the voice of the
neurotic giraffe from the
Madagascar series and,
more recently, as a Kardashian (Robert, not Kim)
in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story miniseries. Now David
Schwimmer is embarking
on his first recurring television role in more than a
decade with AMCs gritty
new series Feed the Beast.
In this crime drama
(Tuesdays at 10 p.m.) set
in the Bronx, Schwimmer
plays a widowed father and
former restaurant owner/
wine sommelier whos suddenly caught in the middle
of an organized crime ring.
His life and his sons depend
on erecting a new establishment thats a financial success, though he must first
overcome his own painful
history.
Schwimmer, 49, spoke
with the Los Angeles Times
about returning to series
TV, becoming a father and
the soft spot he now has for
Robert Kardashian.
What made you want
to take on the role of
a grieving, alcoholic single
father in Feed the Beast?
Really, my heart just
went out to the guy.
Tommys a single parent raising a mixed race,
11-year-old boy, and they
both survived this horrible
tragedy of losing the love of
his life and his boys mother.
The boy hasnt spoken in
a year since witnessing
his mother being killed. I
was attracted to the role of
being a father because now
I am one. I havent really
had the opportunity to play
a dad since Ive become
one, except very briefly as
Kardashian in the O.J. thing,
but this explores that in
much more depth.
AMC is now synonymous with two of the
decades most celebrated
series: Mad Men and
Breaking Bad. The bar is
pretty high. Any pressure?
While this show is
unique because of the
whole cooking aspect and
getting a restaurant on its
feet, it is a one-hour drama
in the traditional sense of
Mad Men and Breaking
Bad. It is character-driven,
theres a crime aspect, and
dark comedy comes out
of it. Its just going to be a
question of getting eyeballs
on it, because theres so
much to choose from now.
Are you a foodie?

Q
A

Q
A

Q
A

I actually just had this

conversation with a
writer from Food & Wine.
I asked her what qualifies
a person to be a foodie? I
told her pointedly, I am
not a person who will fly
to a city or country just to
try a restaurant, so if thats
the definition of a foodie
then I cant say that I am
one. She then asked, Once
you arrive in a city, do you
immediately seek out the
most interesting restaurant
in the city? I said, yeah,
and then she said, Youre
a foodie. That was proof, I
guess, I am a foodie.
What were the challenges of playing Kardashian, or at least playing
him empathetically?
I tried not to have any
preconceptions about
who he was. I was trying
to excavate who this man
was. All I knew when I was
watching the trial, it was
always like, who is this white

Q
A

guy sitting next to O.J. the

entire time? He was on the
defense team but I didnt
get what he did I mean,
he wasnt cross-examining
anyone. And all the other
egos in the room overshadowed him. The attention
was on the flashier players.
Kardashian seemed to be
this private, modest, quiet
player that I wanted to know
more about.
Since Friends ended
in 2004, youve done
film, theater, TV cameos
and directed. Where do you
feel most at home?
I feel equally comfortable on stage as I do in
television or film. I dont
really have a strategy. Maybe
if I did Id be a much bigger
film actor or star, I dont
know. I go with my gut when
I read material sometimes
its a film, a play, a cameo, a
television series. Ive always
thought of this career as a
very, very long one. I hope
to be doing it until I can no
longer see, walk, whatever.
Maybe even then Ill be able
to take a role Scent of a
Woman 2.
The success of
Friends has been a
blessing and a curse.
Its a paradox, for sure.
On one hand, Im typecast, or there is the danger
of being seen or believed as
that one character. On the
other hand, it was a piece
of pop culture and television history, and it provided
financial security. For any
actor or artist, financial
stability is a huge blessing.
It gives you the freedom to
choose and not have to take
a job because you have to
pay the rent or pay health
insurance. Theres not a
day that goes by that Im
not grateful.
Have you noticed that
since Friends was
released on Netflix its now
resonating with millennials?
Ive noticed. Its really lovely to think its
appealing to a new generation. My daughters 5 will
it still appeal in a decade?
Im sure my daughter or her
friends will be more than
happy to tell me when they
get there.
Feed the Beast is
your first return to a
TV series since Friends.
So you once again get to
develop a character with a
potentially long arc.
Right. Fingers crossed
the show is picked up
for another season. Ive
always been fascinated by
the job of a wine sommelier.
Like what kind of person
becomes a somme? What
I learned from one of my
close friends here in the city
who is a top somme is that
there is no one path. It was
fun to invent Tommys back
story and figure out what
his journey was from the
streets of Queens to this job.
Hes so troubled, its
impossible to reconcile with the voice of Melman the goofy giraffe from
Madagascar.
First, Im really thrilled
to hear that, and I hope
others have a similar experience where they can watch
this new guy that Im trying
to create. Im also highly
aware that there will be
some people who will not
be able to distinguish that
this is a different character.
Its OK. Its happened my
entire career. Even when
I did Band of Brothers,
or The Iceman, its like,
Oh, thats Ross in World
War II! Or whatever they
want to say.

DEAR ABBY: I read your column and I

feel for the people who have problems. I

far from perfect and no bed of roses, here I
am at 95 with no serious physical, spiritual,
emotional, family or economic problems.
I grew up during the Depression,
had wonderful parents, worked my way

DEAR TAKING THE STEP: I certainly
do, because there are secular alternatives
to AA.
SMART Recovery offers a four-point
program aimed at motivation to abstain,
coping with cravings, managing negative
emotions and finding a life balance. It has
face-to-face support groups worldwide,
as well as daily online meetings. Like AA,
lifetime abstinence is the goal, and meetings and help are free of charge. Unlike
AA, lifetime abstinence need not require
lifetime attendance at meetings. For more
information, visit smartrecovery.org.
Another group, Women for Sobriety,
may be of interest to you because it is
non-theistic and aims to empower women
and minorities. The website, womenforsobriety.org, does not list its meetings (for
reasons of privacy), so in order to find
a group, you will have to make contact

YESTERDAYS SCRABBLE SOLUTION

This week, we are looking at covering

an honor with an honor ... or not. The basic rule is for the defender to cover the
last of touching honors, but only when it
might gain a trick. That is relatively easy
to do when dummy leads the honor, but
what about when it comes from declarers
hand? Then the defender might not know
which is the first and which is the last of
touching honors. My recommendation is:
When declarer leads the first honor, play
low smoothly.
For example, look at todays deal from
the point of view of declarer. How should
he plan the play in three no-trump after
West leads the spade king?
North made a negative double to show
four hearts (or perhaps five or six if
his hand was too weak for a two-heart
response).
Declarer starts with seven top winners:
one spade, four diamonds and two clubs.
He does not have time to play on hearts, so
must hope to collect four club tricks -- but
who has the club queen?
Unless playing against experts or defenders who have read this column, there
is a reliable method: After winning with his
spade ace (presumably on the third round),
South should immediately lead the club
jack from his hand.

Maybe West will cover an honor with an

honor. Or perhaps he will think about it for
a while. If, though, he plays low without
any hesitation, declarer should win with
dummys ace and play a club back to his 10.
If West then produces the queen, South
should congratulate his opponent on excellent defense.

Texting, online chats get a like at more small businesses

Associated Press

NEW YORK Clients can

text their lawyers to doublecheck hearing times. Potential
customers may message a dog
breeder to find out the due date
of the next litter. More and more,
people who want to get in touch
with small businesses are using
texts or online chats rather than
emails or phone calls.
Company owners are responding in kind, communicating more
on the fly and in short bursts.
Theyre finding that texting,
online chatting and messaging
help them get and give information faster and run their businesses more efficiently.
Its a shift that began in the past
year, several business owners say.
And Facebook says the number of
messages sent between people
and businesses on its Messenger
service has doubled to 1 billion
a month in the past year. Many
companies rely on Facebook to
complement or replace their
websites because customers like
to connect with them through
Facebook pages or ads.
Attorney Rick Davis spends
less time talking on the phone

ORLIN WAGNER | ASSOCIATED PRESS

Attorney Rick Davis accesses his chat room while in his office in Leawood,
Kansas. Davis uses text and chat to communicate with his clients.
because many clients now text
with brief questions. He can dash
off a reply rather than engage in
the small talk that business phone
etiquette often calls for, and says
composing a text is faster than
writing a wordier email.
Davis has followed the lead of
clients who preferred to communicate using texts and chat.
This has been surprising to

me, as law is traditionally a more

formal industry, says Davis, who
has a solo practice in Leawood,
Kansas.
There are some downsides:
Clients may expect an immediate answer, which isnt possible if
Davis is in a meeting or in court.
He doesnt bill clients for
any time he spends texting with
them about their cases, similar

to his policy of not charging for

very short phone calls. Since the
nature of texting is to be brief,
most clients dont require much
time. He uses his personal cellphone and assumes that a number he doesnt recognize belongs
to a client or prospective client.
Although calls and emails have
been the standard methods of
business communication, companies need to use the media that
customers prefer or risk losing
them to other businesses, says
Christina Shaw, an owner of tangible, a marketing company based
in Newburgh, New York.
They have to move into the
digital age, Shaw says. She also
finds that representatives for
many of her own clients, which
are companies, want to communicate through texts.
The change can also ease
the burden of a small business
overflowing email inbox. Wolf
Stuntworks owner Steve Wolf
estimates that texting and chatting on Facebook with customers
has cut his Austin, Texas-based
companys email volume by 70
percent. That makes the business,
which creates stunts for the entertainment industry, easier to run.

We spend a lot of time away

from the computer, and handling
emails through the phone is cumbersome, Wolf says.
Many customers make their
first connection with Wolf Stuntworks, which also hosts classes
and corporate meetings, through
Facebook. They may see photos
that a friend has posted of an
event, visit its Facebook page and
message from there. Wolf and his
staff can answer messages or do
chats on their phones. Customers
seem to prefer the Facebook page
over the companys website.
It has a much more personal
feel, and the information is parsed
out in much more bite-sized bits,
Wolf says.
At Collage.com, which creates
photo books, blankets, calendars
and other items using peoples
photos, many customers want
to use online chat rather than
the phone and that helps the
company serve more clients,
says marketing director Graham
Davis.
We can do five or six chats at
once, Davis says, whereas staffers can talk to only one customer
at a time on the phone and calls
can last up to 30 minutes.

Ed ONeill gets in the swim of voice work on Dory
FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2016

By Rick Bentley
The Fresno Bee

Ed ONeill was a little

surprised when he was
asked to be the voice of
the cantankerous octopus
Hank in the new animated
Pixar film Finding Dory.
Hed done a scant amount
of voice work over the
years.
He doesnt completely
dismiss a suggestion that
the team behind the movie
was just looking for someone who could come across
as grumpy and his was the
first name mentioned. Hes
made a career of being
humorously bitter on programs from Married with
Children to Modern Family.
ONeills theory is that
Pixar chief John Lasseter
had a lot to do with it.
I found out that he used
to come to a lot of the table
readings for Modern Family. I didnt know he was
there, because we have
people who come in all the
time, ONeill says. Finally,
someone told me who he
was: Thats the Pixar guy.
That Pixar guy has
turned the animation studio into a major success
with the first two Toy Story movies, A Bugs Life
and both Cars films. In
2003, Lasseter was executive producer of one of the
biggest fish tales in Hollywood history in Finding
Nemo.
Hes got the same job
with the sequel that follows
Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) as
she tries to find her missing
parents. Hank gives Dory
the means to get around a
marina where she is certain
her family lives.
Whatever the reason,
Pixar turned to ONeill to
voice Hank. The offer didnt
come with a script or even
a few pages to explain what
Hank would be doing. As
far as ONeill knew, Hank
would be little more than a

cameo appearance for him.
I wanted to know,
Why would I sign on to do
the project without more
information? They said,
Because its Pixar. I took a
leap of faith.
Complicating matters,
ONeill had not seen Finding Nemo at the time of the
offer an oversight he has
since corrected.
His character is a mimic
octopus it can impersonate other local species
and predators. That skill
comes in handy as Hank
takes Dory on her long
search. Early in the movie,
it appears that Hank will
be the villain of the film
because hes only helping
Dory as a way of bettering
his own life.
Slowly, ONeill began to
see the real octopus behind

all those tentacles.

He is a very unhappy
creature in his situation.
Hes a loner. The accidental
meeting with Dory is interesting because it is something she wont remember,
ONeill says. But, they are
drawn together by a mutual
need.
Over time, their friendship develops.
ONeill, not usually an
actor who likes to deliver messages in his work,
says Finding Dory is a
move that touches adults
more than kids. We have all
either been parents or had
parents. Thats universal
and makes this a powerful
movie.
That message is about
family which fits perfectly
with his starring role on
Modern Family. ONeill,

the guy whom many groups

were protesting against for
his work on Married with
Children, has settled into
a career of family projects.
People have asked me
if I tried harder on Finding Dory because of all
the children, ONeill says.
That always reminds me
of Jack Dempsey who said
he didnt need to dislike
someone to fight better.
Everybody gets the same
thing no matter what job
you are doing. If you cant
do that, then you shouldnt
be in the business.

Finding Nemo sequel is a delight

By Katie Walsh
Tribune News Service

Unforgettable. Thats how

fans felt about Disneys 2003
hit Finding Nemo, and about
the films breakout supporting character, the infectiously
energetic and forgetful blue
tang Dory, voiced by Ellen
DeGeneres. So unforgettable
that anticipation is at a fever
pitch for the sequel 13 years in
the making, Finding Dory.
Its safe to say that fans will be
delighted to be reunited with
these characters in this charming and heartwarming voyage
under (and above) the sea.
Finding Nemo writer/director Andrew Stanton returns
to helm the good ship Dory
(Angus McClane co-directs),
which takes on Dorys life
story, even though she has a
hard time remembering it.
Dory is determined to return
to her home and find her
loving parents, Jenny (Diane
Keaton) and Charlie (Eugene
Levy), when some of her longlost memories resurface.
So its back across the
ocean Dory goes, with buddies
Marlin (Albert Brooks) and
Nemo (Hayden Rolence) in
tow. They end up at the Morro
Bay Marine Life Institute,
where the voice of Sigourney Weaver announces that
they rescue, rehabilitate and
release the oceans sickly critters. Memories come flooding
back, but before she can even
devise a plan, Dorys scooped

facility, and separated from

MOVIE REVIEW: CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

Central Intelligence is a chase movie that goes nowhere

By Colin Covert
Minneapolis Star Tribune

The arithmetic of comedy

is not that difficult.
If you produce logically
linked laughs every five minutes in a feature film, you
have created a classic.
Deliver random chuckles
every 10 minutes, and your
movie is pretty good.
Provide the best fun in a
pile of outtakes shown in the
end credits and you have a
zero-momentum mess like
Central Intelligence. Its
the kind of movie that sends
you from the theater smiling
because youre glad its over.
No need to bother with
the paltry excuse for a plot
cobbled together by the films
four screenwriters. Lets just
say that Dwayne Johnson and
Kevin Hart play high school
acquaintances rejoining 20
years after graduation to cavort through a thicket of spy
nonsense.
Johnsons character, an
obese wallflower in adolescence, has toned up to intimidating size but remains
a pussycat at heart. Formerly
king of the campus, Hart has
become an office drone. National security agents appear,
shots are fired, the unmatched
duo is on the run, and an inexplicable running gag involving
bananas is milked to exhaustion.
Johnson and Hart are
performers of trustworthy
charisma, but their personal
appeal hits its limits when

Kids learn small business skills with lemonade stands

By Kurt Christian

ts hard to say who will sweat more over

the course of Saturdays Lemonade Day
the cups of lemonade, or the young
entrepreneurs pouring those cups all
across the city.
No matter the sweat equity spent,
Lemonade Days primary goal is to teach
participants how to start, own and operate a
business as familiar to kids as grass stains and
bubblegum a lemonade stand. Throughout
the process, participants create a business
plan, make a product, build a stand, earn
money and network. And this year, some have
even taken part in the very adult process of
applying for a loan.
Financial literacy is a big initiative,
currently, within financial institutions, said
Amy Swain, the Lemonade Day city director.
Were hoping to expand that loan program to
other financial institutions next year.
Early in the month, about 10 teenagers from
the Crestmont Boys & Girls Club practiced
their firm handshakes in the parking lot of
the Peoples State Bank on 17th Street. Once
given the signal, they paraded into a cramped
office, presented a budget, outlined their
wares and requested a $189 loan from
the banks president, Lon Stevens. After
careful consideration and some pointed
questions regarding their slim profit
margins, Stevens approved the loan
agreement. The club members will have
to pay back the loan by the first week of
June; if they dont, the
banks customers
may see a group of

This year just exploded. I think the word
is getting out about Lemonade Day, said
Swain. The program sells itself once kids
learn about it, and parents want this sort of
experience for their kids.

CW to air Supergirl
Mondays, bumping
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Fall lineup includes
time slot changes,
two new series
By Meredith Blake
Los Angeles Times

Its a bird! Its a plane!

Its the CWs fall schedule!
Ahead of its upfront
presentation Thursday
morning in New York, the
CW released its primetime lineup for 2016. Heading into its 10th anniversary, the network is adding
two brand-new series for
the fall, plus Supergirl,
which is relocating from
CBS.
CW is hoping the addition of the drama starring
Melissa Benoist as the
Man of Steels cousin will
provide a ratings boost.
We truly believe that
this is a great help to
us, CW president Mark
Pedowitz told reporters
in a Thursday morning
conference call, adding
that his network, which
is home to three other
DC Comics adaptations,
is where it should have
been in the first place.
Supergirl will air in
the same time slot, Mondays at 8 p.m., it held at
CBS, which should help
ease the transition for
migrating viewers and
could potentially provide
a boost for Jane the Virgin, the modestly rated
but well-reviewed telenovela spoof.
Supergirl will take
over real estate previously occupied by Crazy
Ex-Girlfriend, a critical
darling that has struggled
even more to find an audi-

ence. The musical comedy

starring Golden Globewinner Rachel Bloom will
move to a lower-stakes
spot at 9 p.m. Friday night,
where it could potentially
benefit from lead-in The
Vampire Diaries.
The network is also
unveiling two new series
this fall. No Tomorrow is
a romantic comedy about
a risk-averse young woman who falls for a freespirited guy who believes
the apocalypse is just eight
months away. Its slated for
9 p.m. Tuesdays after The
Flash, the networks toprated series with women,
Pedowitz said, noting that
both shows share a certain
blue-sky optimism.
At 9 p.m. Wednesdays
is Frequency. Based on
the 2000 Toby Emmerich
film, it follows a female
detective who discovers
shes able to speak to her
father, who died 20 years
ago, through an old ham
radio.
Long-running favorite Supernatural, which
Pedowitz compared to
the Energizer Bunny, has
been bumped to 9 p.m.
Thursdays.
The CW has five shows
on tap for midseason. In
addition to returning dramas Reign, The 100,
iZombie and The Originals is newcomer Riverdale, a contemporary
update on the Archie
comics from executive
producer Greg Berlanti,
who now oversees five
dramas for the network.
This has become a
52-week world, Pedowitz said. You have to
have fresh programming
throughout the year.

House of Lies makes

itself at home in Cuba
Associated Press

NEW YORK The

Showtime comedy House
of Lies is wrapping its
five-season run with a
finale shot entirely on
location in Havana, Cuba.
Showtime, which made
the announcement on
Tuesday, says that this
marks the first time an
American scripted series
has been shot in Cuba
since the restoration of
diplomatic relations.
The episode, titled No

Es Facil (Its Not Easy),

premieres June 12.
House of Lies has
centered on the hijinks of
high-flying management
consultants played by Don
Cheadle and Kristen Bell
as they manipulate and
fleece their well-heeled
clients.
While viewers may
miss that show, they wont
be without Kristen Bell
for very long. She will be
back in the fall, co-starring
with Ted Danson in NBCs
new comedy The Good
Place.

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE by Lynn Johnston

girl dating sophomore boy

FAMILY CIRCUS by Bil Keane

DEAR ABBY: Im a senior (girl) in high

school and have been dating a sophomore
even though hes less than a year younger
than I am. (Im very young for my grade.)
We have a lot in common and I think we
both love each other a lot.
Next fall, Im planning on going to a
local community college, but I wont be
too far away. I think my boyfriend has more
interest in the military or a vocational
career than college, but
hes very serious and
mature for his age.
I know college will
be a chance for me to
meet new people and I
dont want to limit my
chances, but if Im still
interested in dating him,
Jeanne
would it be proper?
I was already hesi- Phillips
ta nt a bout dat ing SYNDICATED
him because he was COLUMNIST
younger, although I
knew if the situation
was reversed it wouldnt be a problem.
Assuming everything still works out
between us, is it OK for a college girl to
date a high school boy?
Im not sure how to handle this. I know
things may change before fall, but Im getting anxious about it now. He has already
said that he would still like to date me if I
want to, so its basically up to me. ANXIOUS IN THE MIDWEST
DEAR ANXIOUS: As far as I know, there
is no rule forbidding a college freshman
continuing to date someone who is still in
high school. Because the choice is yours,
I suggest you just let this play out.
College will present you with a chance
to widen not only your range of interests,
but also your circle of acquaintances. You
owe it to yourself to take advantage of
everything that college offers.
If you wish to continue seeing your cur-

rent boyfriend, do so. However, it would

be better for both of you if it is done on a
non-exclusive basis for the next few years.
DEAR ABBY: Several times recently
when I have invited people to parties or
dinners at our home, they have surprised
me by responding with not only their
regrets but also with a counteroffer. For
example: Sorry, were busy the evening
of the 22nd, but could you have us over
the following Thursday?
How should I respond to this? Im trying to invite them for a specific event, not
open a negotiation. It feels like the subtext
is that our schedule is less important than
our potential guests and we should be
prepared to entertain them whatever day
they have open.
On the other hand, this has happened so
often Im starting to wonder if social obligations are now being handled in the same
way as business meetings and I should
just adjust to it. Whats your opinion?
COUNTEROFFERS IN LOS ANGELES
DEAR COUNTEROFFERS: You should
entertain on the schedule thats most convenient for you. If someone has a conflict,
you should (sweetly) tell the person you
will miss having them. Period.

ALDER ON BRIDGE

By Phillip Alder
Newspaper Enterprise Association
Jack Benny said, Give me golf clubs,
fresh air and a beautiful partner, and you
can keep the clubs and the fresh air.
Give me playing cards, a bridge table
and an expert partner, and you can keep
the golf course! A good bridge player will
wonder how to make partners life easy
by describing his hand accurately in the
bidding, or signaling clearly on defense. At
other times, though, he must ask himself
what cards partner needs to hold in order to
defeat the contract.
This deal is a good example. After
a lengthy auction, South is in four hearts.
West leads the diamond ace and cashes
the diamond king, East playing up the
line to show that he started with a tripleton (because with a doubleton, he would
have played high-low). What should West
do next?
In the auction, North might have made a
negative double on the first round to show
spades. However, with such a strong hand,
it is preferable to bid his suits in length order: first clubs, then spades.
West should count up the high-card
points. He has 12, and dummy has 16. That
leaves only 12, yet South opened the bidding. Easts job is to avoid reneging.
To beat the contract, the defenders, with
no more side-suit winners available, need

two trump tricks. Which card must West

hope that his partner holds?
West should lead a third diamond, take
the first round of trumps, and play a fourth
diamond, hoping his partner can ruff with
the heart nine. This effects an uppercut,
gaining a trick for Wests heart 10. Keep
counting those points.

Black banner at Nicks memorializes two friends

Black cloth is wrapped around the sign at Nicks English Hut on Kirkwood Avenue as a memorial to friends of the business. Local bartender and Nicks employee Robert Hebenstreit, affectionately known as Hebe, passed away May 7.
Also memorialized by the banner was the passing on May 3 of Richard Dick Bishop, a longtime customer of Nicks.

As ominous as the black banner twisting around Nicks English Huts sign may look for the
longtime business, the symbols
appearance doesnt portend anything negative for the restaurant. Instead, it announces the
celebration of two lives to be
recognized at the establishment
this weekend.
According to Gregg Rags
Rago, a co-owner of Nicks English Hut, the banner has been
hung as a memorial to friends
who have died. Its appearance
this week marks the recent passing of two more friends of the
restaurant. Local bartender and
Nicks employee Robert Hebenstreit, affectionately known as
Hebe, passed away May 7. Also
recognized by the banner was the
passing of Richard Dick Bishop,
a longtime customer of Nicks.
Hebenstreit, 64, was employed
as a bartender for over 40 years
and worked at many Blooming-

ton establishments, such as The

Olde Regulator, Time Out, Yogis,
City Grill, the Upstairs Pub, and
of course, Nicks English Hut.
According to his obituary, Hebenstreit also co-owned the Peanut
Barrel from the late 70s to the
mid 80s. The family has invited
the public to a Celebration of Life
gathering in the Hoosier Room
of Nicks English Hut today from
6-9 p.m.
Bishop, 78, had been a regular
customer at Nicks since the 60s.
Bishop died May 3 after offering his expertise on broadcasts
through WFIU for 55 years. His
shows, Afterglow, The Big
Bands and Standards by Starlight were listened to by fans of
jazz, swing, big band music and
American popular song. Bishops
obituary stated that a celebration
of life service will occur on at 2
p.m. Sunday at the IU Foundations Showalter House in the
Peterson Room. Afterward, Rago
said, people will meet in the Hoosier Room at Nicks.

Google Daydream VR vision: With opportunity comes challenges

Googles new Daydream VR system could give more people a taste
of VR and make better games and
applications affordable.
But there are hurdles, including a need to buy a new Android
phone no iPhones.
On Thursday, Google offered
more details on its plans to develop a range of VR headsets that
promise to be more comfortable
and durable than its ultra-cheap
Cardboard headset. Google will
make one and share design guidelines with other manufacturers.
There will also be a wireless
motion controller functioning
like a fishing rod, a steering wheel
or a pointer to permit moresophisticated VR experiences.
Sophisticated systems such as
Facebooks Oculus Rift and the
HTC Vive are expensive, limiting
their appeal to gamers and other
tech enthusiasts. Alternatively,
cheaper VR headsets that tap the
power of smartphones are typically tied to one manufacturers
phones, such as Samsungs or LGs.
Daydream headsets will work
with a range of phone brands.
Gartner analyst Brian Blau says
he believes the Daydream-powered devices could prove to be a
thorn in the side of both Samsung and Oculus, which teamed
up to make a similar VR headset,
called Gear VR, late last year.

incentive for companies, educators and individuals to create
VR apps. Google says leading

people to buy headsets.
And the motion controller
could lead to better VR experiences, ones where you do more
than sit and swivel in a chair to
look behind you.
But youll need something far
more sophisticated to unlock the
true power of VR.

MOVIE REVIEW: ANGRY BIRDS

Movie based on popular app will have you seeing Red

By Rick Bentley

Angry Birds

The Fresno Bee

Youll known why the

birds are so mad after
seeing The Angry Birds
Movie. Theyve been
saddled with a thin story,
juvenile writing and a
look that might be great
for flying through the
air but otherwise looks a
little creepy.
The flying havoc
that mimics the popular
video game comes after a
group of sea-going green
pigs pay a visit to the
quiet bird community.
The only disruption is
Red (Jason Sudeikis), a
bird with anger management issues, who believes the pigs are up to
no good.
The pigs initially appear friendly, a ruse to
steal eggs. Quicker than
you can say ham and
eggs, they grab the eggs
and head back to their
island. The egg-napping
is an act of war, and
Red rallies the birds to
respond in the form of
being tossed at the walls
of the pig castle.
This bird tossing is
fun when you send the
feathered fowl toward
the obstacles while playing the game. But just
sitting and watching bird
after bird tossed into
battle with a sling shot
gets old fast.
Angry Birds writer
Jon Vitti shows none
of the wit, sarcasm or
fun he displayed as the

MOVIE REVIEW NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING

Neighbors sequel flips the script to great success

By Katie Walsh

Neighbors
2: Sorority
Rising

Tribune News Service

Two years ago,

Neighbors writers
Andrew Jay Cohen and
Brendan OBrien, along
with director Nicholas
Stoller, reinvented the
classic college party
movie by pitting the frat
guys against the young
parents next door. It
was a raunchy but sweet
rumination on getting
older and growing out of
party mode, a refreshing
take on the college movie
formula. With Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,
theyve flipped the script,
creating a feminist party
classic thats completely
current and doesnt
skimp on any of the wild
humor. Its also even better than its predecessor.
Starring Chloe Grace
Moretz, Kiersey Clemons
and Beanie Feldstein as
the freshman founding
members of Kappa Nu,
the film takes on a real
world issue thats a legitimate problem on college
campuses. Greek sorority
houses arent allowed to
host parties with alcohol,
so the majority of college
parties take place in the
boys rule atmosphere
of fraternities, often
predatory environments
with themes that are usually sexist and designed
to get girls into skimpy
outfits.
The picture-perfect sororities of flower crowns
and sundresses also arent
the right fit for Shelby

(Moretz), Beth (Clemons)
and Nora (Feldstein).
This is a trio of girls who
want to party on their
own turf and by their own
rules. So they find their
own house, formerly the
Delta Psi house next door
to 30-something parents
Mac (Seth Rogen) and
Kelly (Rose Byrne).
The couple are currently attempting to sell
the property, and just
need to get through 30
days of escrow before
the new buyers (Abbi

Jacobson and Sam

Richardson, stealing the
show) move in and have
to deal with the Greeks.
How do they confront
the wild new sorority
next door? A prank war,
of course. If it worked
against Zac Efron and the
Delta Psis, how bad can
some teenage girls be?
Take Animal House
or Revenge of the
Nerds, and turn the
gender roles inside out,
and youll have Neighbors 2. In fact, eliminate

almost all of the guys.

The girls have no real
interest in these slovenly
dudes. Efron as Teddy,
the former frat guy who
cant let go of his college
lifestyle, is simply there
to be objectified, a role
he embraces by performing a Magic Mike style
dance number while
oiled up in barbecue
grease. They refer to him
as Hot Guy.
The film derives a lot
of humor from embracing and also complicating

stereotypes. These girls

are at once absorbed in
their phones, but also
physically powerful. They
wage war through texting,
and always refer to their
neighbors as the old people. Those old people,
Kelly and Mac, question
their own parenting skills,
but theyve embraced the
role of parenthood, vowing to do what parents do
best: Stop young people
from having fun. Their
realization that their toddler daughter will one day

grow up to be a petulant
teen leads to a touching moment that gets at
the bittersweet nature of
parenthood.
Isnt it time that the
ladies got their own rollicking, foul-mouthed,
THC-soaked party
movie? The fact that it
contains a profoundly
progressive message
about the difficulties of
bucking an inherently
sexist system helps its instant-classic status. With
high school graduation
season upon us, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,
should be required viewing for anyone matriculating into college next
year. Congrats, grads:
Good luck, have fun and
remember never drink
the punch.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY

The Man Who Knew Infinity doesnt add up to much

By Michael Phillips

The Man Who

Knew Infinity

Chicago Tribune

Intuition can only carry

you so far. With the patented
over/underplaying only a
wily veteran British actor
can provide, so says Trinity
College mathematician G.H.
Hardy, as played by Jeremy
Irons, to his East Indian
protege Srinivasa Ramanujan,
played by Dev Patel, in The
Man Who Knew Infinity.
The line about intuition
holds true for sincerity and
noble intentions in movie
biopics. Such things cant
always get a filmmaker
over the hump and into
the realm of dramatically
effective storytelling. Writerdirector Matthew Brown
(whose previous feature
was Ropewalk) has taken
on a little-known true story
of considerable groves-ofacademe potential. Ramanujan
arrives at Trinity College,
Cambridge, in 1913, leaving
behind a wife (Devika Bhise)
and an initially disapproving
Brahmin family (It is
forbidden to cross the seas!
his mother says).
This ill-educated Indian
clerk has been brought
to England by Hardy, who
recognizes Ramanujans knack
for pure mathematics as well
as his disdain for traditional,
rigorous proofs. The Man

Jeremy Irons and Dev Patel in The Man Who Knew Infinity.
Who Knew Infinity charts
the adversities encountered
by Ramanujan in his short
life: the racism; the fearsome
Cambridge establishment;
loneliness; and finally
tuberculosis. The movie
focuses on the relationship
between Ramanujan, who

claimed to channel his

formulas directly from above,
and the progressive atheist
Hardy, during and after the
Great War.
Its pretty dull, sorry to
say. Movies about math (or
physics, or anything) dont
have to be, of course, but

writer-director Brown brings

a purely functional visual
style to the proceedings.
We experience Ramanujans
feverish, obsessive pursuits at
a discreet remove, his travails
and triumphs smooshed
into forgetability by one of
the most enervating musical

scores of the year.

As with so many X plus Y
movies before it, the writing
or explanation of brilliant
mathematical formulas
in The Man Who Knew
Infinity is depicted either
wordlessly, often by firelight,
as part of a bland montage, or
else a classic chalk-down
blackboard moment. Here,
such a moment comes when
Hardy, speaking before his
fellow Trinity College dons,
puts the chalk down at the
beginning of the scene and
says: So! Now we see the
work of partitions and the
enormous breakthrough
that has been achieved.
Despite the infinity-grasping
poetry of that achievement,
plus the efforts of Patel,
Irons and a supporting cast
including Toby Jones (as
John Littlewood, Hardys
friend and supporter) and
Jeremy Northam (as Bertrand
Russell), Browns film is
routine prose.

American Honey earns its screen time at Cannes festival

By Justin Chang
Los Angeles Times

CANNES, France How long

is too long? Its a question that
moviegoers are accustomed to
asking at the Festival de Cannes,
with its reputation for marathon
running times, and this year has
been no exception.
The official selection got its
most time-consuming entry
out of the way on the first day
with Cristi Puius just-shy-ofthree-hours Sieranevada. But
Puius film is scarcely the sole
competition entry to have clocked
in at well north of two hours. Park
Chan-wooks The Handmaiden
runs a tightly coiled 145 minutes,
and Maren Ades Toni Erdmann
and Andrea Arnolds American
Honey last a somewhat baggier
162 minutes each and have, even
in their most glowing notices,
taken flak for their perceived selfindulgence. (Theres also Kleber
Mendonca Filhos 140-minute
Aquarius and Na Hong-jins
out-of-competition thriller The
Wailing, listed in the festival
program with a running time of
156 minutes.)
Ive already written about
why I think Toni Erdmann,
in mapping the contours of
an unusually intricate fatherdaughter relationship, largely
earns the right to be unhurried and
exhaustive. American Honey,
though in some ways trickier to
parse, earns it too. Arnold, the
prodigiously talented British

director of Red Road, Fish

Tank and Wuthering Heights,
has shown an increasingly
fearless command of form with
each film, and in American
Honey, her tough, electrifying,
the-kids-are-definitely-not-allright road movie, she leaves
conventional ideas of narrative
structure almost completely by
the wayside, relying on pure
texture, sensuality, imagery,
music and performance to drive
her picture forward.
The astonishing newcomer
Sasha Lane plays Star, a Texas girl
who, fed up with her depressing
home life, impulsively tags along
with a band of teenage drifters
making their way across the
Midwest. At the instruction of
their whip-cracking manager,
Krystal (a terrific Riley Keough),
these kids raid remote outposts
and suburban neighborhoods
trying to se ll magazine
subscriptions, though its soon
clear that what theyre really
selling are their own dead-end
sob stories something that
will stir the charitable empathy of
the poor and wealthy alike. They
are in effect selling themselves,
the implication of which Arnold
follows, at one point, to its logical
conclusion.
There are toxic romantic
complications
and
misunderstandings involving
Krystals top seller, Jake (a
charismatically grunged-up Shia
LaBeouf), who shows Star the
ropes and soon shows her other

things as well. But the movie

never becomes fully invested in
their on-again-off-again flirtation,
and with a few exceptions we
never learn much about the other
kids in this nomadic commune,
either.
Arnolds attention gravitates
toward other elements in this rural
American panorama: the startling
beauty of a prairie sunset, the
furious pop energy supplied by
the films terrific soundtrack, and
the small insects that repeatedly
creep into the frame as though
drawn, moth-like, to the flame of
Lanes magnetism.
You cant blame them:
Arnold and her extraordinary
cinematographer, Robbie Ryan,
keep their camera close to their
leading lady, who has both a
spunky-sultry impudence and a
profile worthy of a Greek coin
a quality emphasized repeatedly
in Ryans ravishing square-frame
compositions.
American Honey is a
jaggedly beautiful aesthetic
object, and at 2 hours, 42 minutes,
its accumulation of immersive
details is meant to frustrate
your sense of time passing. The
subculture being examined here
is a fascinating one, but long
stretches of tedium, we come to
understand, are also a significant
part of the characters journey.
Which is not to suggest that
Arnolds road movie, for all its
sensory pleasures, lacks an arc
or a destination: In a revelatory
culmination of song, image and

wordless exchange, the movie

arrives exactly where it needs to,
with Star emerging a bit sadder
and a bit wiser an epiphany that
wouldnt matter as much to us if
we hadnt seen and experienced
so much alongside her.
How long is too long? Roger
Ebert was fond of saying, No
good movie is too long, and no
bad movie is short enough. I
have a feeling he would have dug
American Honey.
The Handmaiden is the
Korean director Parks most
delectable narrative feature in
years and I say that as someone
who found his Stoker a genial
hoot but had little patience
for Thirst, Oldboy and his
other strained exercises in goresloshing perversity. Theres a
little of that sadism on display
here, but it doesnt rear its head
until the end, and when it does it
feels almost reflexive, compulsive
as if Park himself had become
so wrapped up in the yarn he
was spinning that he suddenly
realized, shoot, he hadnt sliced
off anyones fingers yet.
Adapted from Sarah
Waters Victorian-set novel
Fingersmith but relocated to
1930s Korea, this ornately artdirected erotic puzzler centers on
two beautiful women: Sook-hee
(Kim Tae-ri), a wily pickpocket
turned duplicitous caretaker, and
Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), a
Japanese heiress who is the target
of Sook-hees deception.
Over the course of the

movies three chapters, two

of which provide a revelatory,
Rashomon-style shift in
perspective, the women will
become lovers, rivals and allies,
and their teasing, mercurial role
play is what gives the movie its
seductive pull.
A sort of Gaslight-meetsJane Eyre with a big ol splash of
Diabolique, The Handmaiden
has predictably generated a lot of
ink over its explicit lesbian love
scenes a touch that might well
have been decried as exploitative
(just as Blue Is the Warmest
Color came under attack here at
Cannes three years ago) if not for
the righteous narrative primacy
that Park grants his leading ladies.
Guys may well take pleasure at
the sight of these women going
at it, but the entire audience can
take a certain gratification in the
way they turn the tables on the
devious and controlling men in
the picture, including Hidekos
uncle (Cho Jin-woong), a pervy
old purveyor of Japanese erotica
who keeps a collection of human
genital parts in jars.
Fetishism is both a crucial plot
point and an entirely accurate
description of Parks stylistic
approach. The Handmaiden
may not be much more than
ravishing surface at the end of
the day, but Parks embrace of
his own voyeurism is awfully
infectious. He likes to watch, and
its a pleasure to admit that we
do, too.

Bequest from UU fund renovates

three preschool classrooms at MCUM
Special to the H-T

Monroe County United Ministries nationally accredited

childcare program received a
$17,078 donation in February
that will allow the childcare
center to provide much-needed
renovations to three of its classrooms.
Thirty years ago, Leonard
Lundin bequeathed a large sum
of money to the Unitarian Universalist Church into the Lundin
Monroe County Youth Facility
Fund.
It was Lundins dream to
see his money directed toward
building a youth facility in Monroe County. Since there wasnt
enough money for this to be
feasible, an ad hoc committee
from the church decided that
the most effective way to meet
his goals was to repurpose the
fund.
In December, the fund was

renamed the Leonard Lundin

Monroe County United Ministries Fund.
In its new form, this fund will
support renovations in three of
MCUMs classrooms, providing
new equipment, toys and physical upgrades.
With new equipment,
MCUM can better serve the
low-income students who
attend its childcare program.
At MCUM, kids receive two

Crimson Stables offers horseback riding activities for all skill levels
By Kurt Christian z 812-331-4350 z kchristian@heraldt.com

On its surface, the history Crimson Stables has built upon is a lot like the history
of other equine training centers. Its a 30-year old facility with a 30-year old
Hanoverian to match. The head trainerss boots are high, black and shiny. Shes
vetted in the English style and trained in the pastures of Kentucky. At one time,
the stables even operated under the ostentatious brand Devonshire.

Still, what sets this re-invented facility

apart from its counterparts just might be
what it takes for a horseback riding center
to find success two miles northeast of a
city like Bloomington.
Aimed at making the sport more
approachable, owners Mike Ross and
Scott Rolens vision is for a premiere,
family-friendly stable that caters both to
equestrians steeped in the practice, and
to novices interested in exploring the
pleasures of a new experience. From that,
Crimson Stables was born, named after
the citys collegiate colors and a reference
to the open pastures scenic crimson
skies.
Horse people dont really like to
teach beginners at all. They focus on
the advanced-level riders and stay with
them because they like to show, and kids
are hard to teach, said Amy DuKate,
manager, head trainer and instructor
at Crimson Stables. You have to have
years of patience, and its a lot harder to
put kids on a 1,000-pound animal while
theyre trying to coordinate their balance,
and use their hands separate from their
legs, separate from their head. It takes a
lot of time, and theres not a lot of people
willing to do that.
Originally Devonshire Equestrian
Center, then retooled as Rocky River
Horse Stables, the nearly nine acres of
pasture and arena space at 2025 N. Russell Road came under new ownership last
summer and began a nearly year-long
renovation effort to update the barn,
stalls, fencing, outdoor rings and indoor
arena. While the number of stalls may
fall from 39 to 37 to accommodate an
expanded tack room, the facilities will
still be large enough to host the Indiana
University Equestrian Team and trips
from Wonderlab.
As of now, there are 13 students taught
by the facilitys two instructors. Ranging
from city kids new to the sport, to adult
novices checking an item off their bucket
list, to students who show their horses
through 4-H, DuKate hopes to grow that
number to 113 by seasons end.
A lot of your facilities are showfocused, and they cater to the people that
only want to show or have already chosen
to make this a huge part of their lifestyle,

Crane: A
defining
point in
our region
Regions are defined geographically; lines are drawn
on a map, and places are
grouped together by location
and proximity. But the people,
the assets and the opportunities that one finds inside those
geographic lines are the things
that truly define a region.
One asset that certainly
helps define our region is
Naval Support Activity
Crane. With
its two major
tenants, Naval
Surface Warfare Center
(NSWC),
Crane DiviBecky
sion and
Skillman
Crane Army
Ammunition
A CRANE VOICE
Activity, NSA
Crane is the
third largest
naval installation in the world.
It drives nearly $800 million
into the Indiana economy
annually; it is a hub of federal research and development; it employs more than
5,000 people, many of whom
are scientists, engineers and
technicians; and it is also a
leader in STEM education and
outreach. The bottom line
Crane is incredibly important
to our region.
Because of its tremendous
impact, we have added a
new position to the Radius
Indiana organization to help
ensure that the public is well
informed about the opportunities, successes and challenges
at Crane.
Matt Craig has been named
Radius Indianas director of
Crane community support.
Craig will work to attract
new defense business investment to the region and elevate
awareness of Crane in the
community, the state and
within the U.S. Department
of Defense. Craig will work to
strengthen the network of advocacy for Crane to ensure a
future of stability and productivity for this regional asset.
Craig retired from NSWC,
Crane Division after 30 years
of service; his last appointment was as the deputy
technical director and interim
technical director. We are extremely fortunate to have him
join our team, as his experience and years of dedication
to Cranes mission make him
an invaluable asset in Radius
Indianas efforts to strengthen
the region and create more
jobs in the defense sector.
He will work closely with
local leaders, residents and
stakeholders and engage the
NSA Crane customer base
within the U.S. Department
of Defense and other federal
agencies. Craig also will work
with the Radius Indiana Business Development staff to increase research opportunities
and investment in the region,
as well as collaborate with the
Radius Defense and National
Security Advisory Council, the
Southern Indiana Business Alliance and the Indiana Office
of Defense Development.
We know that the value
of military installations like
Crane is continually assessed
at a federal level, and the Radius team remains committed
to understanding not only how
that value is determined, but
how it can be enhanced.

Becky Skillman is president and CEO of

Radius Indiana. Next week, Ivy Techs
Steve Bryant will share his views.

PASADENA, Calif. If
orange is the new black,
then 70 is the new 40. At
least thats what Lily Tomlin
and Jane Fonda think. And
they are proving it as aging
cohorts in Netflixs Grace
and Frankie, streaming its
second season.
I think 70, thats when
things started to really happen for me, says Fonda. For
one thing, shes found happiness, she declares. Why
dont we just start with that?
I mean, sort of knowing
what to look for in a partner, for example having a
steady job, a man. Ive never
had to go to a studio every
day for five months. Its
fabulous. When youre 78,
having a steady job like that,
I absolutely love it.
And then, working for a
company where the product that youre making it
was released on a Thursday
last April. We were in New
York promoting it. The next
morning, Friday, we got on
a plane to fly to L.A. By the
time I got home, I was getting calls and emails from
people who already saw the
whole Season 1. I mean, to
have what to me was like a
revolutionary experience
like that when youre my
age, thats pretty great. So I
love 70s!
Tomlin, whos the less
talkative of the two, says
that she probably felt the
freest in her life when
she was 15 and managed
to avoid juvenile delinquency school. But, she
reckons, The first 20 years
of your life everything is so
imprinted and you spend
the next 20 trying to get
that out. The next 20 trying to remember where it
all started I dont cling
to those things in the past.
I think I probably had a
pretty good time (then). I
think I did, she says.
Grace and Frankie is
about two very different
women who find themselves odd-couple pals
when their husbands come
out of the closet and leave
their wives for each other.
The husbands are played by
Sam Waterston and Martin
Sheen (West Wing).
Waterston, who played
the stiff Deputy District
Attorney Jack McCoy on
Law & Order for 16 seasons, says people are astonished by the show. They
dont expect such delicate
and difficult and hard subjects as late-in-life sexual
orientation changes and
divorce and death itself
and aging to be funny at all.
And so I think people are
frankly astonished. They
were astonished to see Jack

star in Grace and Frankie,
a Netflix series.
McCoy claiming that he
was a homosexual, and they
were astonished to see the
president of the United
States want to marry him.
Fonda says that not only
do she and Tomlin synchronize on the series, they
share a special bond in real
life. I love being with her
for all kinds of reasons,
but she has a funny bone.
I come from a long line
of depressed people. And
she has a true funny bone.
Thats one of the reasons I
love going to work every
day. I get to spend time with
somebody whose take on
everything comes from a
place of funny, which for me
is total catharsis, she says.
I mean, its just fabulous
She jokes a lot with me
and Im so lacking in humor
that I think its all serious.
And then she has to kind of
bring me out of it. We have a
good time together, and we
do have a history together.
That history dates
back to 1980 when the two
starred with Dolly Parton
in 9 to 5, a working-girl
comedy about three female
employees who dream of
wreaking revenge on their
chauvinist boss. Ever since,
theres been talk of a sequel,
but so far its only talk.
Tomlin and Fonda are
conspiring, however, to
bring Parton on Grace and
Frankie as a guest star. But
executive producer Marta
Kauffman (the guru behind
Friends) says not now.
Were still, I feel, creating a world, and the world
is Grace and Frankie. Thats
the world. These are characters you want to know and
invest in. And the minute
you bring Dolly Parton in
who I love by the way its
9 to 5. No matter what you
do, the thought is, Oh, look,
its a 9 to 5 reunion! And
youre taken out of the show
I will say there will never
be a Friends reunion movie,
but I will not say never on
the Dolly Parton thing.
But this season there are
several guest stars, including Sam Elliott as Fondas
new love interest and Amy
Madigan as his wife.

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE by Lynn Johnston

DOGS OF C-KENNEL by Mick & Mason Mastroianni

FAMILY CIRCUS by Bil Keane

DEAR ABBY: I am the building manager

of a high-rise office building. Every year we
perform a fire alarm test to determine that
all our fire alarm systems work properly.
Employees in the building must evacuate
in a timely manner.
Two years ago, a very overweight woman told me she had a heart condition and
could not make it down the stairs during
the drill. I told her to proceed to the stairwell, have one of her co-workers give me
her location and in the
event of a fire Id send a
fireman up to get her. A
year later, another obese
woman told me she, too,
couldnt make it down
the stairs. Word has gone
out in the building. Now
10 other women have
asked to be added to the Jeanne
list so they wont have Phillips
to descend the stairs.
SYNDICATED
I have nightmares COLUMNIST
about these women
standing in stairwells
waiting for firemen to help them during
a real fire. I have a call in to my local fire
chief to see what he/she thinks I should do.
Have you any thoughts on this matter?
WORRIED BUILDING MANAGER
DEAR BUILDING MANAGER: Employees who are disabled need to know the
evacuation plan in place for their safety. If
others are taking advantage of the system
set up for people with disabilities in order
to avoid going down the stairs, it is unfair
to everyone.
I took your question to Austin, Texas,
Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr, president
of the International Association of Fire
Chiefs, and to Allan Fraser, senior building
code specialist at the National Fire Protection Association. Both expressed concern
that you would create a list, because lists
can become out-of-date or misplaced and
of no use when a fire occurs. People quit,
get fired, go on vacation, are home sick,
etc. on any given workday.

The late chairman of NFPAs Disability

Access Review and Advisory Committee, Bill Scott who was a wheelchair
user often said, Everyone, regardless
of their disability, has some responsibility
to ensure his or her own safety. Being
dependent on others for rescue can be a
recipe for disaster.
NFPA offers a free Emergency Evacuation Planning Guide for People With Disabilities, available for download at www.
nfpa.org/disabilities. Chief Kerr and Mr.
Fraser recommend you get it. I hope you
will take them up on the suggestion and
be a stickler for compliance.
DEAR ABBY: Im a dad whose children
are growing up fast, and our second will
soon be out of diapers. Before that happens, I need to get clarity on public diaper
behavior.
Often I find myself at a restaurant when
it smells like its time to change the diaper.
Instead of running to the bathroom for a
false alarm, I (and most parents I know)
pull back the back of the diaper to check
while were in the middle of the restaurant.
Is this bad manners or considered to be
practical behavior? ON THE SCENT
OUT WEST
DEAR ON THE SCENT: Pulling back
the diaper should not be necessary. Experienced parents know what a clean and
empty diaper looks and feels like. Others
just pick up their child to determine if he
or she passes the sniff test. I suggest
this is what you do until your child is out
of diapers.

ALDER ON BRIDGE
By Phillip Alder
Newspaper Enterprise Association

LAST WEEKS SCRABBLE SOLUTION

Robert Orben, a comedian who is also

a magician and was a speechwriter for
Gerald R. Ford, said, There are days
when it takes all youve got just to keep
up with the losers.
That is a good sentence for bridge players to remember. Especially when in a suit
contract, after the dummy comes down,
the declarer should pause and count up his
potential losers. How many should South
see in todays deal? He is in four hearts,
and West has led the club queen.
Well, lets count them up. South has
one in spades, one in hearts, one in diamonds and one in clubs -- one too many.
At this point, it is a good idea to count
winners. (If an opponent complains that
you are taking too long, tell him that he
has just broken your train of thought and
you will have to start all over again!)
Here, declarer has one spade, four hearts,
two diamonds and two clubs -- a total
of nine. Hmm ... things are grim. What
should South do?
North, counting three points for the
singleton, was well worth his single heart
raise.
The spade, heart and diamond losers are
theoretically unavoidable. Declarer must
eliminate that club loser. After taking
the first trick, he must lead a diamond,

preferably a sneaky jack. If West is asleep

and plays low, suddenly South can collect an overtrick. But lets assume West
wins with his ace and plays another club.
Declarer takes the trick, discards dummys last club on the diamond king, and
starts to draw trumps. Eventually, he will
ruff his club six on the board to eliminate
his loser and to gain a fifth trump trick.

State launches site to help start new businesses

TheStatehouseFile.com

INDIANAPOLIS
State leaders have launched
a business website in an
effort to streamline the
steps for starting a new
business.
Gov. Mike Pence and
Indiana Secretary of State
Connie Lawson on Monday
launched INBiz, the first
phase of the states business

one-stop web portal. On

INBiz, business owners will
be able to complete several
registration steps including
filing, reporting and making payments.
The first phase of the
project includes business
services within the Secretary of States office, and
will include services from
the Department of Revenue
and Department of Work-

force Development later

this year.
From day one of this
administration, we have
been focused on cultivating
a more business-friendly
environment that encourages investment and opportunity for all Hoosiers,
Pence said in a statement.
Weve cut taxes and red
tape, invested in our classrooms, our workforce and

the infrastructure that

makes Indiana the Crossroads of America.
Officials said the website modernizes the current business registration
system and enables business to open their doors
faster. INBiz also utilizes
state-of-the-art security
features so businesses can
feel safe about inputting
business information into

the system.
INBiz will be the most
comprehensive one-stop
resource in the nation,
Lawson said in a statement. It will streamline
and expedite the registration and compliance process, reducing the cost of
doing business with the
state. Todays launch is just
the beginning, and we will
continue to add as many

services as business owners

demand.
As the portal continues
to grow, INBiz will become
the single point of contact
for businesses as they do
business with the state.
INBiz is available at INBiz.

WASHINGTON
Across America, the middle class is hollowing out.
A widening wealth gap
is moving more households into either higher- or
lower-income groups in
major metro areas, with
fewer remaining in the
middle, according to a
report released Wednesday by the Pew Research
Center.
In nearly one-quarter of
metro areas, middle-class
adults no longer make up
a majority, the Pew analysis found. Thats up from
fewer than 10 percent of
metro areas in 2000.
Pew defines the middle
class as households with
incomes between twothirds of median income
and twice the median,
adjusted for household
size and the local cost of
living. The median is midway between richest and
poorest. By Pews definition, a three-person household was middle class in
2014 if its annual income
fell between $42,000 and
$125,000.
Middle class adults
now make up less than half
the population in such cities as New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Houston.
Th at s h a r p s h i ft
reflects a broader erosion that occurred from
2000 through 2014. Over
that time, the middle class
shrank in nine out of every
10 metro areas, Pew found.
The shrinking of the
American middle class
is a pervasive phenomenon, said Rakesh Kochhar, associate research
director for Pew and the
lead author of the report.
It has increased the polarization in incomes.
The squeezing of the
middle class has animated this years presidential campaign, lifting the
insurgent candidacies of
Donald Trump and Bernie

Sanders. Many experts

warn that widening
income inequality may
slow economic growth
and make social mobility
more difficult. Academic
research has found that
compared with children in
more economically mixed
communities, children
raised in predominantly
lower-income neighborhoods are less likely to
move into the middle class.
Wendell Nolen, 52, has
experienced the slide from
middle-class status firsthand. Eight years ago, he
was earning $28 an hour
as a factory worker for
Detroits American Axle
and Manufacturing Holdings, assembling axles for
pickup trucks and SUVs.
But early in 2008, the
good life unraveled. After
a three-month strike, Nolen
took a buyout rather than a
pay cut. Less than a year later, the plant was closed and
American Axle shipped
much of its work to Mexico.
Now Nolen makes $17
an hour in the shipping
department of a Detroit
steel fabricator, about 40
percent less than he made
at the axle plant.
America is losing jobs
because of the free trade
stuff, Nolen said. Theyre
selling America out.
Nationally, the proportion of middle class adults
shrank to 51 percent in 2014
from 55 percent in 2000,
Pew found. Upper-income
adults now constitute 20
percent of the population,
up from 17 percent. The
lower-income share has
risen to 29 percent from
28 percent.
Yet the changes have
been much more dramatic
at the local level. There
are now 79 metro areas in
which the proportion of
adults in upper-income
households equals or
exceeds the national average of 20 percent. Thats
more than double the 37
cities in which that was
true in 2000.

Can Assassins Creed spawn a film series?

By Josh Rottenberg
Los Angeles Times

Michael Fassbender is not a

big video game guy at least not
anymore.
In his younger days, the actor
remembers coming home from
a night job unloading boxes in
a warehouse and playing one
particular racing game. Id get
obsessive about it and sit there
for six hours straight, Fassbender
said recently by phone from
Australia, where he is currently
shooting the next film in the
Alien franchise. I decided it
wasnt the best thing for me to
have around.
When the French video game
developer Ubisoft approached
Fassbender a few years ago about
signing on to a film adaptation of
its popular game series Assassins Creed, he knew next to
nothing about the game, which
blends history, parkour-style
action, sci-fi, conspiracy theories
and, as the title suggests, a whole
lot of stealthy killing. I hadnt
played it, said the actor. I was
totally ignorant.
Suffice it to say, hes learned a
lot since then.
On Dec. 21, 20th Century Fox
will release its big-screen take
on Assassins Creed, with Fassbender starring as Callum Lynch,
an alienated, violent drifter who
discovers that he is descended
from a 15th century Spanish assassin named Aguilar. Recruited
(kidnapped is more like it) by
a corporation called Abstergo
Industries, Lynch taps into his
ancestral memories via a device
called the Animus to gain the
know-how to fight the Assassins
age-old nemeses, the Templars, in
a battle for the future of humanity.
Callum doesnt belong to
anything, doesnt have a family,
Fassbender said of the character,
who is different from the original

games main protagonist, a young
bartender named Desmond
Miles. We thought it would be
interesting to have somebody that
was disconnected be faced with
what it means to join something
so sacrificial.
With their rabid built-in fan
bases, fast-paced action and often
complex mythologies, video
games have often been alluring
fodder for movie adaptations.
Assassins Creed is one of four
hitting theaters this year, along
with Ratchet and Clank, The
Angry Birds Movie and Warcraft, and many more are in the
pipeline. (Among other projects,
Ubisofts film division is also
developing an adaptation of its
Splinter Cell game series, with
actor Tom Hardy attached to
star.)
Translating the interactive

gaming experience into the medium of narrative film, though, is

a tricky piece of business. For
every commercial success like
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or the
Resident Evil series, there are a
whole lot of forgettable duds like
Doom and Street Fighter: The
Legend of Chun-Li. But Ubisoft
and Fox are bullish on the film,
and plans are already in the works
for an ongoing franchise.
Assassins Creed, which
jumps back and forth in time
between the present day and the
Spanish Inquisition, is attempting
a tricky balancing act simultaneously treating the game that
inspired it with what Fassbender,
who is also producing the film,
calls a healthy dose of respect
and disrespect.
On the one hand, the movie is
trying to capture what hard-core

gamers have loved about the

many Assassins Creed games,
which have sold more than 80
million copies and spawned a
number of spinoff comics and
novels. On the other, its trying
to tell an engrossing original
story that stands on its own even
if youve never even laid a finger on a game controller. (With
Fassbender and costars Marion
Cotillard and Jeremy Irons, its
safe to say the Assassins Creed
cast boasts more Oscar nominations and wins than any previous
video game adaptation.)
Like Fassbender, director Justin Kurzel had never played the
game before signing on to the
project. Nor, for that matter, had
the Australian filmmaker who
previously directed Fassbender
and Cotillard in last years Macbeth ever made a film on this

scale, with this degree of action,

special effects and stunt work.
Thats probably what attracted
me to it how frightening it
was, he said last week by phone
from London, where he is in postproduction on the film, which
cost more than $150 million to
produce.
Rather than try to replicate the
first-person gaming experience
with filmmaking gimmickry,
Kurzel locked into the characters
and the narrative, exploring the
idea of genetic memory as well
as the rich, volatile history of the
Spanish Inquisition.
I spent most of my time with
the story and the real history,
Kurzel said. That was my main
focus not so much forensically
going through every aspect of the
game. It was: How do you make
this into a piece of cinema?
If Assassins Creed works on
those cinematic terms and, of
course, on box-office terms the
plan is to follow it with sequels
that will roam through history
like the game series, which has
ventured into such periods as the
Crusades, the Renaissance, the
American Colonial era and the
French Revolution.
The possibilities are kind
of endless, Kurzel said. When
weve been discussing where you
could take it, youre not sitting
around twiddling your thumbs.
Thats whats so intriguing for
people who love that universe,
said Fassbender, who added that
the arc of a potential Assassins
Creed trilogy has been sketched
out. I was talking to a friend
recently and he said he was talking to his 14-year-old son about
going away on a long weekend
together. He said, Where do you
want to go? and his son said, I
want to go to Florence. He wanted to check out the city because
of the game.

LOS ANGELES Batman

stands majestic in the drizzle. A
tattered Spider-Man glides past
a rumpled Captain America.
Superman tucks away a dollar
and combs his sheen. A camera
flashes. A tour guide hollers to the
squeak of a kid strangling an animal balloon as a stroller hurries
over spilled change and slippery
stars on Hollywood Boulevard.
Goofballs, foreigners and
deadbeats, says Batman with
the disdain of a superhero who
knows well the ways of Gotham.
He takes a breath. Two girls slip
under Supermans padded arms.
A couple of cops eye a gold-plated
Transformer. Sensing danger
or at least inquiries SpiderMan points his sneakers left and
disappears through the crowd in
a suspicious, red flash.
Its tough out here, says Batman, who for years has watched
pretty faces try to crack into the
movies one way or another only
to slink back home to places like
Duluth, Poughkeepsie and Big
Sky. People have their hearts set
on one dream, he adds, swirling
his cape in the morning rain and
posing for a picture with a woman
smitten with his pointy ears
and mysterious gaze. They set
themselves up for failure. But Im
constantly getting re-inspired, in
different ways.
He scans the boulevard. Tourists rush past the TCL Chinese
Theater, a tattoo kiosk and the
dinosaur peeking over the roof
at Ripleys Believe It or Not Odditorium. The scent of Ghirardelli
chocolate mixes with car fumes,
popcorn and perfume. A street
prophet rants into a breeze blowing over the starred names of
Groucho Marx, Frances Drake
and other celebrities, some long
dead, others still with us.
Before Batman was Batman,
he was Captain Jack Sparrow,
Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter.
Im not going to get anywhere
doing just Johnny Depp characters, explains Austin Franklin,
27, a former Ralphs checker
who struck out almost a decade
ago from Thousand Oaks and,
with a knack for costumes and a
showmans flair, headed 33 miles
east. He is an aspiring actor, the
chipped-tooth middle child of
an electrician and a stay-at-home

mom.
Schooled in video games and
comic book universes, Franklin is
an earnest superhero on a street
of panhandlers, shakedown artists and the tempting glow of
neon. It is a world of pretendpretend, a realm where costume
characters dress up as on-screen
costume characters in a blurry
loop between the real and the
imagined.
Would-be actors and hustlers
are as ingrained in this city as
those they imitate. Not much has
changed over the years desires
are much older than movies
except the quality of outfits and
tough-to-please kids attuned to
hi-def, pixelated entertainment.
Some, like Batman, are sleek,
but many are shabby. They work
in whispers and winks. A buck
here. Five dollars there. Dodging
drunks and steering clear of the
homeless.
Franklin brushes rain from his
cape. His sentences are bruised
with the career casualties of
friends: Matt, a cinematographer
and editor who quit the film scene
and switched to the safer bet
of computer science, and Max,
whose passion for becoming a
serious actor was ground down
until he got really discouraged
and tired of chasing things that
wouldnt come. He moved back
to North Carolina.
We dreamed of playing big
parts like Ben Affleck as Batman or Jared Leto as the Joker,
which comes out this year in
Suicide Squad, Franklin says.
Johnny Depp was an inspiration.
I loved his Jack Sparrow. I pieced
together my own Jack Sparrow

costume. It cost about $600. My

friends said, Why are you spending $600 on a costume youll wear
just once for Halloween? But one
suggested I come to the boulevard and be Jack Sparrow. I drove
in and made 60 bucks in one day.
Batman works a stretch of
sidewalk near a Transformer,
the towering, gold-gleaming creation of Daniel Kaslov, who has
written six unsold screenplays
about ordinary souls forced by
circumstance into heroes, not
the superhero variety, more the
guy-next-door breed. Kaslovs
costume much of it looks
raided from a suburban garage
is a seamless montage of football shoulder pads, upside-down
flower pots, Nerf gun, air ventilation hose, vegetable strainer and
two blue eyes made from jewels
I found downtown.
This is what I do, man. When
someone buys one of my screenplays for a million bucks, Ill quit.
Or maybe Ill be buried in this, he
says through a black scrim hiding
his face. A kid runs up and grabs at
his gun. A Chinese family strolls
by; two lovers with Polish accents
stop and stare. They move on,
passing a guy with a skillet and an
apron whos talking about cooking into a camera.
Ive always dreamed of traveling the world, but Ive never
dreamed of people coming to
me from Europe, Africa, Mongolia. Who meets people from
Mongolia? I dont have a boss. I
can come out and make $20 or
$200. Its up to me. His jeweled
eyes glimpse a poster for the new
Captain America movie. Whats
that writer feel like when he sees

AUSTIN FRANKLIN, an aspiring acter

who performs as Batman on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame
that, sees his words come to life?
Misdemeanors and infractions flow over the boulevard.
A man dressed as Mr. Incredible was convicted last year of
punching and body slamming
Batgirl. Two Captain Americas
and a Spider-Man brawled in
2013, and two years before that
police questioned SpongeBob
SquarePants after a fracas involving two women. Police say they
have since increased their presence to deter aggressive panhandling characters are allowed
to receive only tips and stem
turf disputes.
Its gotten a lot better, says
one officer, watching as a man
in a Zorro get-up dashes toward
the Metro. Were assigned here
every day.
Face drawn, hair tousled,
Franklin played linebacker in high
school even though he has the
lean lines of a receiver. His words
meander with the rhythm of an
erratic train. He seems expectant, as if waiting for a villain. He
talks about staying in character
and often sees my Batman face
when glimpsing in a mirror or
at photograph. His biggest tips
came from a Japanese and a German, who each gave him $100.
The comic book world is
booming, says Franklin, who has
taken his guises to Las Vegas and
Comic-Con conventions. You
can be a professional costume
player. People will hire you for
events. Once I get more professional with my costumes, I can
move forward and make $500
in a couple of hours. Im tired of
seeing all these cheesy Batmans.
He pauses and looks around

at nothing particular. I need to

build a fan base on social media.
Ive got to get on Vine and Instagram and YouTube. I want to be
an actor. But now Im perfecting
my costumes.
He doesnt like urethane. His
breast plate was made from it,
and it became scuffed and faded.
He prefers latex, pointing to his
mask, which fits tight and was
made by a friend who is teaching him to make his own. His
new suit is spandex and his $150
cape is polyester. His snug, black
motorcycle gloves cost $20 online
and match his leather boots, a
$2,000 value bought for $350
online. Black eyeliner shades his
cheekbones, and when the wind
is right and his cape flutters, it
seems he might fly away.
A Russian from Siberia, a caricaturist new to the boulevard,
was curious about what I looked
like under the mask, he says.
But I thought, when the mask
is off shell see me for the first
time. All that pressure. Its an odd
thing with masks. They create
imagination. When it was off, she
told me, You need help with your
style and your haircut. She was
painfully honest. But she totally
got me. We got hitched in Vegas
in May 2015.
She really wants to pursue
fine arts, he says of his wife, but
sometimes she thinks shes not
talented enough. And I tell her,
Honey, you are.
The real Batman may not have
been so quickly smitten. The boulevard, though, has its own rules,
a tangle of shtick, gaudiness,
yearning and the rare moment
of escape, in the night more so
than in the day, when a man in a
costume can see himself beyond
the bounds of expectation. Some
characters know this, others dont
care and some, like the ragged
Captain America, hurry with
their crumpled tips to buy lottery
tickets.
The tourists have expectations
too. They roam in packs, selfie
sticks at the fore.
Guys want to play like theyre
beating up Batman and have their
picture taken, Franklin says.
Drinking crowds can get a little
too touchy. Women in short skirts
sometimes lean up against Batman and pull their legs up. Thats
where I draw the line. Batman
wouldnt do that.
He is quite sure of this.

MOVIE REVIEW: MONEY MONSTER

Foster does what she

can with complex thriller

By Colin Covert

Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

Lee Gates, the main man

in the complex thriller
Money Monster, plays
a popular stock specialist
on live television, telling
viewers what to buy, sell or
hold. He looks and acts like
the classic stereotype of a
Wall Street whiz on TV
$5,000 suit, winning smile,
sharp patter.
Lee, played by the handsome and genial George
Clooney, is big on TV
because even when his
proposals are risky, they
sound brilliant. If he warns
that your retirement savings will tank unless you
stockpile Nigerian hedge
funds, his polished presentation could convince
you. Provided he stays in
character. And you dont
know Treasury bonds from
bail bonds.
Remorselessly vain
Lee is like the friendliest gaming table croupier
youll ever meet. When one
of the biggest bets he is
pushing crashes, a furious
young investor bursts onto
his show with a gun and
explosive vest, and overinflated Lee finds himself
to be, sadly, a mere mortal.
Police-o-rama raids, hostage negotiations, gripping
action sequences and high
ratings for Lees broadcast
ensue as his life falls apart.
Money Monster, the
fourth feature directed by
Jodie Foster, resembles
Lee. Its fairly smart and
has fetching features. But
its only kind of good.
At the plot level, its
sometimes murky when
you want it to snap into
plausibility. While it often
feels like Fosters instincts
as a director outpace the
abilities of her screenwriting team, what she delivers
is infernally attractive.
The film is a sort of
crime thriller and a kind
of critique of malfeasance
by Wall Streets masters of the universe. But
mainly, its a portrait of a
man whose life is quickly
turned upside down,
inside out and nearly shot
full of holes. Clooney is
great as a narcissist with

multiple divorces and a

messy emotional life being
publicly dragged through
the whole nine yards.
When he begins connecting with the blue-collar
guy holding him prisoner
(Jack OConnell), is Lees
increasing decency another act for the camera?
Clooneys shifting approach to this antihero
part is so different in terms
of energy that when he
steps away from his glib
broadcast role, its a relief.
OConnell, playing an unruly one-man riot, is asked
to do little more than brandish weapons and shout
threats, which he does with
chaotic energy.
Julia Roberts adds a
grace note to the story as
Lees producer, remaining
in the control room and
trying to handle the crisis.
Stage managing her anxious
star performer through the
lifeline of his earphone, she
guides him into conversations with the terrorist
that prevent the siege from
literally exploding. Keeping
circumstances on the edge
of total collapse with good
advice, she is genuine and at
times wrenching. She also
has the nearest thing to an
emotional connection to the
main character, talking him
out of the slick persona he
peddles on camera and back
to real humanity.
Foster has made a long,
excellent acting/producing/directing career out of
working with gifted people
on excellent films and
recent TV fare like House
of Cards and Orange Is
the New Black. She takes
a surprising step here, and
doesnt stumble. She carries
the story across multiple
hairpin turns as accusations
of dishonesty trigger investigations into stock manipulation, high-tech detective
work, and the appearance of
a billionaire tycoon with an
agenda of his own.
The movie transmutes
from high stakes suspense
to the human comedy while
it hops from Manhattan to
Korea, South Africa and Iceland. Thats a lot of shifting
to do, and Foster manages it
without stripping the gears.

Jack OConnell in Money Monster.

Jack OConnell Powers

his way to acting career

By Rick Bentley
The Fresno Bee

LOS ANGELES Jack OConnell

grew up in the United Kingdom
wanting to be the Red Power Ranger. It wasnt that the star of Money
Monster was thinking he could
become an actor and portray the
colorfully clad creature conqueror.
He wanted to actually be the Red
Power Ranger.
I thought it was a real vocation,
OConnell says with a smile.
He never did get his chance to
slip on the red suit, but OConnell
has been able to take on a host of
other challenges through his alternative decision to become an actor.
His latest work has him playing Kyle
Budwell, a disgruntled investor who
takes over a cable financial news
program in hopes of confronting
the man whose company lost all of
his investment because of a glitch.
George Clooney plays the host of
the money program, who becomes
Budwells bomb-wearing hostage.
It was good that OConnell and
Clooney got along so well during
the filming, because a majority of
their scenes take place on a single
set, giving the movie an almost
play-like feel.
Shooting in one location for
such a long, long time made a lot
of things possible to us, OConnell
says. We had numerous TV cameras as well as film cameras. So you
were never off camera.

It wasnt until OConnell saw

the final edit of Money Monster
that he realized some of the scenes
in the movie were captured when
he didnt know the cameras were
working.
It was easy for Jack OConnell to
find the right motivation to understand how to play his character in
Money Monster. Ambition, just
like what he had to be a Power
Ranger and then an actor, is what
drives the character.
He wants to better himself and
his environment, and hes been
encouraged to do that all his life,
OConnell says. He lives in a world
where we are told that if you do
everything just right, it might just
pay off.
He did everything right. Hes
done his research and tried to be
smart about what he does.
Once OConnell decided he wanted to be an actor, he committed
himself to all of the work needed to
make it his career. When OConnell
was 8, he had an insatiable desire to
be the center of attention and to make
people laugh. At the end of the school
year he was given an award as class
clown and as a charmer. He eventually found an outlet through acting.
OConnell, who was born in
Derby, England, credits his acting
career to the Labour Party, which
was in control when he was young.
One of the things the Labour Party
did was spend a lot of money on
creative arts, which opened the door

for OConnell to study acting.

Landing an acting career wasnt
easy and took sacrifices. Thats why
OConnell tells those who want
to become actors to be ready for
hard work, because if it was easy,
everyone would be doing it. To
this day, he still questions whether
it has been worth all of the effort to
be an actor.
OConnells been a professional
actor for more than a decade, but in
recent years hes been sharing the
screen with many of Hollywoods
stars. Along with Clooney and
Julia Roberts in Money Monster,
OConnell was directed by Angelina Jolie in Unbroken and works
alongside Judi Dench in the upcoming Tulip Fever.
Its not like OConnell decided
he was only going to work with
A-listers its just a coincidence.
He points to a list of smaller films
where his co-stars would have to
wait for a table at most Los Angeles
restaurants rather than getting star
treatment.
But even his director on Money
Monster is another top name in
Hollywood Jodie Foster.
There were times perhaps when
I wasnt hitting it for her, and she
would come over and ask me to do
the emotion for her. She lets an actor
find their way. She gives you what
you need. She sets up the parameter for you to work in and talks a
little about where the cameras are,
OConnell says.

Chadwick Boseman continues superhero streak as Black Panther

project was announced.
That worked out perfectly for Marvel. Studio
chief Kevin Feige said Boseman was their first choice
for the role.
He is an incredibly talented actor who possesses all of the qualities that
we wanted to inject into
the character, Feige said.
Weve been seeding the
notion of the Black Panther
and the nation of Wakanda
all the way back to Iron
Man 2, so it really felt like
the time was right to bring
in a character that had his
own agenda.
In Captain America:
Civil War, TChalla/Black
Panther stands apart from
the other Avengers as they
argue over whether to
accept government oversight. He cant be distracted
or dissuaded from his own
personal mission.
Marvels first black

superhero was introduced

in comic books in 1966, but
Captain America: Civil
War marks his cinematic
debut. Black Panther will
headline his own Marvel
movie in 2018, but the cat
has Bosemans tongue
when it comes to spilling
details about it.

He wont say if the

script will be based on
the new Black Panther
comic-book series by celebrated journalist and
author Ta-Nehisi Coates,
which debuted last month.

Marshall in an upcoming
biopic of the first black
Supreme Court justice.
Still, Boseman plans to use
his body. Hell lose 25 Panther pounds to play the
legal superhero, and exercise his powers of speech.
Theres just as much
gymnastics, just as much
spectacle in the spoken
word as there is in the
physical body. The tongue
is a muscle, too, Boseman
said. It really doesnt matter whether Im running
or doing capoeira or Im
speaking long speeches,
its an exercise regardless.
And its something hes
been practicing and loving
since he was a kid.
Weve all played superheroes before, he said with
a laugh. What you were
doing as a kid, the fun of
it was if you actually had a
suit, you would use it, and
you got up and you did the
movements. You took on
the voice. You took on all of
it. So its not really different
here. Its just bigger.

LOS ANGELES
Chadwick Boseman joins
the Marvel universe as
Black Panther in Captain
America: Civil War, but
this isnt his first time playing a superhero.
His breakthrough role
was as Jackie Robinson in
the 2013 biopic, 42. The
following year, he became
James Brown in Get On
Up. So stepping into a
third super-powered part
as Black Panther is nothing
really new for the 39-yearold actor.
Yeah, I would say that,
said Boseman with an easy
laugh that belies the sincerity and conviction with
which he approaches his
craft.
To play TChalla, Black
Panthers alter-ego and heir
to the throne of the fictional
African nation of Wakanda,
the 39-year-old actor did
more than read every Panther comic he could find.
He also made several trips
to the real continent of Africa, and even took a role in a
small film so he could play
a South African character.
You know how comedians, before they do their big
HBO standup show, they
do the Comedy Store or a
smaller venue? Boseman
asked. To me, this was an
independent film, so it was
a chance to play a character from the continent of
Africa before doing Black
Panther.
Boseman first discovered the Black Panther
comic books while a student at Howard University,
and he wanted to play the
character before any film

direct the film.

Boseman is willing to
share what he put into
creating the character for
the screen in Civil War,
from working with two dialect coaches on TChallas
Wakandan accent to studying various martial arts for
Panthers stealthy, catlike
fighting style.
He embraces the physicality of the role as a means
of understanding it.
The physical part is
what makes it fun for me
and helps me get inside the
characters, he said. The
spirit of the character is
going to begin to come out.
Boseman trained on the
baseball field to play Jackie Robinson and danced
eight hours a day to portray James Brown. For the
Panther role, he practiced
capoeira, karate, kung-fu
and jiu-jitsu.
Part of it with Panther is
theres an unpredictability,
he said.
Bosemans next job is
decidedly less physical but
nonetheless demanding
