Ajig'sprimarypurposeistoproviderepeatability,accuracy,andinterchangeabilityinthemanufacturingof
products.[1]Ajigisoftenconfusedwithafixtureafixtureholdstheworkinafixedlocation.Adevicethat
doesbothfunctions(holdingtheworkandguidingatool)iscalledajig.
Anexampleofajigiswhenakeyisduplicatedtheoriginalisusedasajigsothenewkeycanhavethesame
pathastheoldone.Sincetheadventofautomationandcomputernumericalcontrolled(CNC)machines,jigs
areoftennotrequiredbecausethetoolpathisdigitallyprogrammedandstoredinmemory.Jigsmaybemade
forreformingplastics.
Jigsortemplateshavebeenknownlongbeforetheindustrialage.Therearemanytypesofjigs,andeachoneis
customtailoredtodoaspecificjob.Manyjigsarecreatedbecausethereisanecessitytodosobythe
tradesmen.Somearemadetoincreaseproductivitythroughconsistency,todorepetitiveactivitiesortodoajob
moreprecisely.Jigsmaybewellmadeforfrequentuseormaybeimprovisedfromscrapforasingleproject,
dependingonthetask.
Sometypesofjigsarealsocalledtemplatesorguides.Jigsincludemachiningjigs,woodworkingjigs(e.g.
taperingjig),welders'jigs,jewellers'jigs,andmanyothers.

Drilljig
Adrilljigisatypeofjigthatexpeditesrepetitiveholecenterlocationonmultipleinterchangeablepartsby
actingasatemplatetoguidethetwistdrillorotherboringdeviceintothepreciselocationofeachintendedhole
center.Inmetalworkingpractice,typicallyahardeneddrillbushinglineseachholeonthejigplatetokeepthe
toolfromdamagingthejig.
Drilljigsstartedfallingintodisusewiththeinventionofthejigborer.
SincethewidespreadpenetrationofthemanufacturingindustrybyCNCmachinetools,inwhichservocontrols
arecapableofmovingthetooltothecorrectlocationautomatically,theneedfordrilljigs(andforthejobsof
thedrillpressoperatorswhousedthem)ismuchlessthanitusedtobe.
