CHENANI NASHRI TUNNEL PROJECT

The IL&FS Transportation Network Limited (ITNL), a leading surface transportation

infrastructure company and one of the largest private sector BOT road operators in India, has
undertaken development of a very prestigious and a strategic Road Tunnel Project in
the sensitive State of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) of India. The project involves the
development of the new alignment section of NH-1A measuring 38 Lane Kms, including a
nine kilometre long two-lane tunnel with a parallel intermediate lane escape tunnel from
Chenani to Nashri on NH-1A in the State of Jammu & Kashmir. This would be the longest
road tunnel

The concession has been awarded by NHAI on DBFOT (Annuity) basis for a period of 20
years, including an initial construction period of five years, pursuant to a concession
agreement dated June 28, 2010. The concession period commenced from May 23, 2011. The
Project is expected to be complete in November, 2015.

This Tunnel connects Chenani, in Udhampur District to Nashri, in Ramban District. The
tunnel will reduce a longer road through steep, hilly and difficult terrain of about 41Km to an
all-weather road of just 10.9 Km. ITNL has appointed Leighton India Pvt. Ltd. (Leighton) as
the EPC Contractor for the Project. Leighton is

is using New Austrian Tunnel Method

(NATM) of Sequential excavation and support system, the most advanced tunnelling
technology available in the world.

With 9 km long single tube-bi-directional tunnel and Parallel Escape tunnel with 29 cross
passages, total tunnelling involved is 19 Km out of with 17 Km tunnel excavation is
completed as on May 31, 2014. The Tunnel is being constructed in the Lower Himalayan
Ranges under the most challenging and difficult Geology of the young Himalayan
Mountains. In this region, climate is the main challenge during construction with extreme
climatic condition like heavy Snowfall in winter. Working in such a condition is very difficult
and first demands for clearing the snow and muck accumulated for making the path for
mobilisation periodically.

Even then, our workforce has undertaken the construction of the Project with courageous
efforts. The tunnel excavation for the Escape Tunnel had started from both ends
towards the center of the Tunnel and have now joined on 02.06.2014. Although it is the

CHENANI NASHRI TUNNEL PROJECT

Longest road tunnel in India, the Escape tunnel of 9Km long has been completed in a
record time of 33 months. This event is a significant Engineering achievement.

About 2000 workers and engineers are working round the clock, 24x7 with a singular aim of
completing the Project before the scheduled time i.e, 22nd May 2016. After completion the
Tunnel will be opened for traffic coming to this region from all over the Nation and
particularly for the people of J&K. Out of the total workforce, 94% of our work force is from
J&K and this has substantially contributed to boost the local economy of the area. Safety
during construction is given top priority and all safety precautions are being taken at the
Project Site .

As on date we have completed 68% of the Project work and it will not be out of place to
mention here that of all the tunnels being presently constructed in J&K state the progress of
Chenani -Nashri Tunnel is by far the best.

Simultaneous to Tunnel Construction, we have undertaken many CSR initiatives in the areas
of Health, Education and Skill Development for the local population. These initiatives have
significantly contributed to improve the quality of life of the local population. These initiates
have been welcomed and accepted by the local population who has participated with their
willingness and enthusiasm.
