Independent Technology

Project Plan
1 PLANNING SHEET
Description of project:
Students in Grades 2 or 3 will take part in a unit about Simple Machines.

What is the purpose of the end product you will create?

Students will:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Use multiple types of technology to learn about Simple Machines

Describe all 6 types of Simple Machines.
Understand the vocabulary associated with Simple Machines.
Demonstrate how each Simple Machine Works.
Create a Kidspiration with information they learned from each
lesson.

What technology will you use?

Students can use a PC, Mac, IOS or Android device for their lessons. Videos
from You Tube, online games and kidspiration will all be used throughout
the lesson.
Intended audience:
This unit can be used for 2nd or 3rd graders.

Information, materials and resources required: What do you need

to know to complete this project and where can you find the
information? (You must document all sources consulted and
used.)

Academic and /or NETS-S and NETS-T standards this project would
address:
Grade 3:
3.PS.1
Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of
balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
3.PS.2
Identify types of simple machines and their uses. Investigate and build
simple machines to understand how they are used.
3.RV.3.2
Determine the meaning of general academic and content specific words
and phrases in a nonfiction text relevant to a third grade topic or subject
area.
3.SL.2.2
Explore ideas under discussion by drawing on reading and other
information.
3.M.2:
Choose and use appropriate units and tools to estimate and measure
length, weight, and temperature. Estimate and measure length to
a quarter-inch, weight in pounds, and temperature in degrees Celsius and
Fahrenheit.
3.DA.2:
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths with rulers to the
nearest quarter of an inch. Display the data by making a line plot,
where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units, such as
whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Grade 2:

K-2.E.1
Pose questions, make observations, and obtain information about a
situation people want to change. Use this data to define a simple problem
that can be solved through the construction of a new or improved object or
tool.
K-2.E.2
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate and
investigate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve
an identified problem.
K-2.E.3
Analyze data from the investigation of two objects constructed to solve the
same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each
performs.
2.RV.3.2
Determine the meanings of words and phrases in a nonfiction text relevant
to a second grade topic or
subject area.
Project timeline and learning sequence:
Each day students will learn and discover a different type of Simple
Machine. Daily instruction will include a hands-on group project, reading
requirement, video, discussion, and quiz. A technology project from
kidspiration that each student will present in front of the class will also be
assessed.
Learning Sequence:
Monday:
Teacher will introduce Simple Machines with video found here:
https://youtu.be/6m2Udf7HlCU . Teacher will post learning timeline on
board. Teacher will also post all instructions and links to the class website
so that absent students can access information, parent know what the
daily requirements are and so that students will have link to homework
accessible outside of school. Instructions will be handed out for the
technology project; kidspiration with all requirements, due date and
grading rubric.
Lesson One: Lever (Please see attached Lesson Plan. All lesson plans will
follow that format.)
Lesson Two: Pulleys
Lesson Three: Wedges
Lesson Four: Wheels and Axes

Lesson Five: Screws and Ramps
