Street Feeders of KL (SFOKL) Street Feeding Guidelines 2015

SFOKL conducts its operations on the understanding that all volunteers must comply with a Code of Conduct
whilst on the street.
We have developed these to ensure not only a meaningful experience for our volunteers, but also for the safety of
those working with SFOKL, and that volunteers are not offended by behavior of others.
The code also explains the rules of engagement when working with our street friends to protect their dignity and
has been developed by SFOKL over the years of working on the streets.
This Code of Conduct must be complied with, and SFOKL reserves the right to exclude volunteers who fail to
comply with them from either joining operations, or may request individuals to remove themselves from ongoing
operations as required.
Whilst each Group Leader will give a briefing at the commencement of each Street Feeding (operation), it is
important that all volunteers read this and understand their commitment whilst on the streets with SFOKL.
Come in a White top (unless you are coming as a group/company of which do let the organizers know of your
theme color in advance) and good walking shoes. Refrain from wearing or bringing anything expensive. Bring an
empty Backpack to carry supplies. Bring your own drinking water.
Current meet up point and base is under the LRT bridge just on the left after entering the open car park at Central
Market.
SFOKL covers a certain radius of the city which includes areas like the Underground tunnels by Pasar Seni LRT
Station (beside the Klang River), Pudu Raya (UTC), Kota Raya, Petaling Street, the district of banks (Bangkok
Bank), the Clock Tower area (by the Bar Council), Segi College, Masjid Negara.
There are always a few street feeding groups operating at any one night as well, but here are some of the general
guidelines we all follow:
1. If questioned by any person other than a member of the street feeding team about the activities please direct
such queries to the Group Leader who is authorised to respond on behalf of the assigned group.
2. REFRAIN from taking photographs/video directly of the homeless unless consent is given.
3. DO NOT use flash photography at night.
4. DO NOT give cash to the homeless, regardless of the circumstances.
5. DO NOT give out your personal details (mobile number, email, etc) to our street friends.
6. Remember at all times that our street friends are human beings. Please always show them respect.
7. Always approach the homeless from the front and never from behind as this sometimes startles them. Begin by
asking them if they are hungry before handing out any food supply. Take this oppurtunity to get to know them and
strike up a conversation; many are more open to share their stories than one would think.
8. If a homeless is asleep, DO NOT wake them up to give them food. Place the food packet next to them quietly
and leave.
9. ALWAYS follow and stay with the team. Listen carefully to all instructions and guidelines given by the Group
Leader. Safety is paramount especially when crossing main roads with a big team.
10. Please refrain from wearing any items such as gold, jewellery, expensive watches.
11. DO NOT TOUCH anything belonging to our street friends or around the area where they gather or live.
12. Always conduct yourself with dignity on the street. DO NOT hug, kiss or hold hands with any other volunteer
(regardless of whether they are spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend) while operational.
13. Refrain from smoking during a Street Feeding (except when at base) or handing out any cigarettes to any of

our homeless friends no matter how much they ask.

14. Stick in your teams at all times. If you have to be separated or leave early for whatever reason do inform the
Group Leader. Keep a good walking pace with the team to avoid being left behind (a buddy system would help in
terms of safety throughout a Street Feeding, especially when reaching out to the homeless).
15. SFOKL is not liable or responsible for any accident(s), mishaps or incident(s) that may occur due to any
individuals irresponsibility or negligence during a Street Feeding.

16. For CSR programmes SFOKL require a letter/ email (streetfeedersofkl@gmail.com) to the SFOKL
Committee, stating objectives, intention, numbers attending, sponsorship being brought. SFOKL will then meet
with the CSR team and advise on the protocol on the streets and make final arrangements for the CSR.
17. CSR programmes DO NOT include the general volunteers who regularly attend street feedings. CSR
programmes are a specific project between assigned Group Leaders and a particular company whose CSR is being
organized for.
18. Only official and sanctioned CSR programmes will be approved by SFOKL.
19. If you are planning on sponsoring or bringing supplies for an upcoming Street Feeding do get in touch with
Suresh Ragavan (suresh.ragavan@gmail.com) who is incharge of operations for all Street Feedings at least one
week in advance to avoid oversupply.
20. Here at SFOKL handing out food supplies is merely an act of building a relationship with the homeless
community. As the main purpose of any Street Feeding is to reach out to our homeless friends, do ensure your
focus is on them during a feeding. Get to know them, their stories, their experiences, their hopes and dreams. Ask
them about their day and how are they coping on the streets. (Do give SFOKL your feedback if you have any
suggestions from them on what is lacking or what are their current needs and if any individual is looking for a job)
Be that ear that listens to them as if they were your friends and family, because they are our people after all; they
are Malaysians. Let us show them the hospitality Malaysians are known for throughout the world because they
deserve it.
We greatly appreciate your assistance in complying with the above as we believe this will enhance the experience
for all of our volunteers, and also for our street friends.

If you would like to volunteer as a Group Leader (must have

journeyed with SFOKL for more than 4 Street Feedings) or
simply would like to contribute either in the form of monetary
support or in supplies or maybe you have resources or contacts to
do more for our street friends do get in touch with us via email
(streetfeedersofkl@gmail.com) or directly to Gary at
0122283493.
