Progressive Discipline Steps

Progressive Steps for Addressing Inappropriate Minor Behavior

Before a student is referred to the office for a negotiable (minor) offense,
follow these steps:
The teacher follows and documents the progressive discipline steps
(with fidelity) for NEGOTIABLE infractions. Those steps should be:

Offense #1 - Verbal warning

Offense #2 - Counseled with the student about his/her behavior/issued
Offense #3 - Tried at least one corrective strategy (Model Behavior,
Isolation/Change Seating, Review Expectations)

Offense #4 - Contacted parent and documented the conversation (call

or conference)

If the teacher has NOT followed all of the steps of progressive

discipline with fidelity for NEGOTIABLE infractions, the Counselor
must send the referral back to the teacher with the statement:
There is no evidence that the progressive steps of discipline have been
followed with fidelity. Please be reminded that the following should happen
for ALL negotiable offenses:

Verbal warning
Counseled with the student about his/her behavior/issue
Tried at least one corrective strategy (Model Behavior, Isolation/Change Seating,
Review Expectations)

Contacted parent and documented the conversation (call or

conference)
If you need assistance with implementing these steps, please see your
grade level administrator.

If the teacher has followed all of these steps with fidelity, then the
Counselor should begin to follow her progressive steps for NEGOTIABLE
infractions. Those steps should be in this order:
Check to see if the student has an IEP, if the student has an IEP, consult
his/her behavior plan (and SPED chair) for behavior
modifications/consequences. COUNSELOR MUST SUBMIT FORM to signal to
Sped department that a BEHAVIOR PLAN is needed IF THE STUDENT has an
IEP.

behavior plan has been requested prior to providing an action for Offense #5.

OFFENSE #5 - Create a plan of success for the student that explains his/her
expectations, what will happen if they dont follow the plan and what will
happen if they do follow the plan. The teacher, the student, and counselor
should sign the plan. If the student has a 504 or IEP. The behavior plan should
be created/reviewed at this step. Counselor documents her work with the
student on the PDS form and gives a copy to the teacher. Counselor keeps a
copy for herself.

OFFENSE #6 - If the student is written up for this issue again, the parent must
come in for a conference. When the parent conference is held, all of the
students teachers should be present and complete the pre-parent
conference form BEFORE the conference is held so that the discussion will
flow smoothly and the parent will walk away with possible suggestions.
Counselor documents her work with the student on the PDS form and gives a
copy to the teacher. Counselor keeps a copy for herself.

must attend group intervention. Counselor documents her work with the
