PHILIPPE BOUZEREAU'S FAMILY have been
{growers in Mersault for nine generations. His
father established the domaine in the 1960s
‘and today, from Aloxe-Corton to Santenay, the
family owns a mosaic of vineyards covering
almost 18 hectares.
Bouzereau has been in charge since
2005, farming ina sustainable manner—
‘my wine-grower's common sense’. For
this reason he’s wary of oak for its ability
tocompromise terroir; he seeks purity
and authenticity in his wines,
Vieux Clos du Chateau de Citeau, at
the at the foot ofthe Citeaux castle, is
the family’s 1.7ha monopole ~ ‘my
garden’, says Bouzereau. He believes the
21-year-old vines draw an energy from
the deep, stony soil which was farmed by
monks in the 11th century, giving silky,
fine and elegant wines,
In most years, 8,000 bottles are
produced, but this fel to 5,000 bottles
in 2014. Fermentation ison light lees,
inoak barrels, with regular stirring, Its
bottled after 12 months.
