Assignment 1.

Challenger
Material

a failure in the joint between the two lower segments of the right
Solid Rocket Motor. The specifc failure was the destruction of the
seals that are intended to prevent hot gases from leaking through
the joint during the propellant burn of the rocket motor

Assignment 1.3
Why do impurity atoms segregate to grain boundaries?

Grain boundaries have special properties of their own.

The lower bond density in the boundary is associated with a boundary surface
energy (0.5 J/m^2).
The more open structure of the boundary can give much faster diffusion in the
boundary plane than in the crystal on either side.
The extra space makes it easier for outsized impurity atoms to dissolve in the
boundary.
when an alloy contains more of the alloying element than the host metal can
dissolve, it will split up into two phases. The two phases are stuck together by
interphase boundaries which, again, have special properties of their own.

Assignment 1.4
A lead-tin alloy with composition Wpb=0.8 is held at a temperature T.
(a) At T=280C, which is the dominant phase
By the lever rule, liquid is dominant
(b) At T=200C, which is the dominant phase
By the lever rule, Solid Pb is dominant

Assignment 1.5
(a) When at 150C , only solid is present
(b)
(c)Solid is dominant
(d) Wpb= Q/(Q+P)=8/(8+1)= 8/9= 88.89% AND Wsn= 1/9= 11.11%
