beasolidteammateineachrotation.Afterfamiliarizingmyselftothesysteminafewdays,Ifeltexcited
andmotivatedaboutusingmyhandsintheinterestofhealing.ItwasduringtheserotationsthatIlearnedto
workwithmyhandsandcompletesimplesurgicalprocedures.Despitebusyschedules,goodteamwork
betweendoctors,studentsandnursesboostedtheefficiencydramatically.Isawthevalueofteamwork
complementingleadershipfromsurgeons,andIwasexcitedtoseenewtechnologybothinresearchandin
theoperatingroom.Ilearnedthateachpatientandscenariocouldbringauniquechallengetowhatmay
seemlikeastandardsurgicalprocesssinceunexpectedthingscouldhappenandthesurgeonsmustalways
bepreparedfortheunexpected.Themostfeaturedpointofsurgicalservicetomeisthatitisproblem
focused,requiringnotonlysurgicalskillsbutalsoenormousknowledgeofmedicinetoevaluatepatients

surgicaltechniqueshasbeenobvious.AsaseniorstudentIvolunteeredtohelpoutbytutoringjuniorsin
anatomyclasswhileIwasinmy3rdyear.Iwastoucheddeeplybyhowateacherwhospendsextratime
canmakeadifference.Thelookofclarityandunderstandingthatwashesoverastudentsfacewhenheor
shesuddenlyfiguresoutadifficultconceptissomethingIwanttoreproduceinthefuture.

Intodaysenvironmentofspecializationandsubspecialization,Istillfindgeneralsurgeryisriveting.
