The singular and plural names of

God

PRAISE
All through scripture we are commanded
to praise the NAME of the Lord.
David is the most prevalent person in the
bible to openly offer praise, and many of
the songs we sing today are derived from
the psalms he wrote.

Psalm 8:1 O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy NAME in

all the earth.
Psalm 29:2 Give unto the Lord the glory due his NAME.
Psalm 7:17 I will praise the Lord according to his
righteousness, and will sing praise to the NAME of the
Lord most high.
Psalm 66:2 Sing forth the honor of his NAME :make his
praise glorious.
3

Psalm 100:4 Enter into his gates with

thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be
thankful unto him, and bless his NAME.
Psalm 103:1 Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and all
that is within me bless his holy NAME.
Psalm 135:3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is
good, sing praises unto his NAME for it is
pleasant.
4

David offered praise in times of joy and in times

of sorrow. Whenever he was in a difficult
situation he would call out to God through song.
As you know Saul would often call David to play
and sing for him when he was troubled.
And on the worst day of Davids life he went to
the Lord for strength, direction and solace.

Why We Are To Praise The Name

of the Lord
In bible times a man just wasnt given a
name to keep from confusing him with
someone else. Your name expressed the
kind of person you were or were hoped to
become.
This is why God sometimes changed a
mans name. His intent was for the
persons character to be reflected in his
name.

EXAMPLES
Abram to Abraham Gen. 17:5
God changed Abram = Exalted Father
Abraham= Father of many
Jacob to Israel
Gen. 32:27
Jacob- the supplanter became Israel-one
who struggled with God and overcame.
He became the father of the nation of
Israel
7

More Examples
Jesus also changed some mens names
Simon was changed to Peter. What he was
saying is you will no longer be like the waves of
the sea, but you will be Petra or Peter, and upon
this rock I will build my church.
Saul to Paul. Jesus changed Saul=the asked for
one to Paul=little one. Small in stature but strong
in the Lord.

GODS NAMES
In the case of God, he gives himself
names that are extensions of Himself.
The name reveals his nature and his
character.
Later we are going to focus on the
compound names of God, but first lets
look at four of the more general names he 9
has given himself.

Elohim meaning plural

The first verse of the Bible Gen.1:1
In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens, and the earth.
Elohim appears over 2700 times in the Bible. The prefix El means
one who is great, mighty, and dreadful. It is also plural which
signifies the trinity.
Some say the word means to swear, which implies the covenant
nature of God. I swear by my name.
To the Hebrew children this would have meant the great mighty
three in one God who establishes and keeps his covenant forever.

10

El Shaddai- used only 48 times in the Bible and

always translated The Almighty One.
We first see this name in Gen.17:1 when Abram
was 99 years old the Lord appeared to him and
said I am the Lord Almighty God (El Shaddai),
walks before me and be blameless.
This is also when God also changed his name to
Abraham, and promised him that he would be
the father of many nations.
11

Adonai- The third name God uses for himself.

This name appears about 300 times in the OT, and
suggests Lordship and ownership.
When God uses Adonai to name himself he is saying I
am the One who owns and rules everything. Isaiah used
this name in chapter 6 vs.1 when he wrote, In the year
that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord seated on a throne,
high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the
temple.
This focus was on the truth that God owns and rules
over everything.
12

Yahweh- I Am That I Am
The most frequently used name for God, it appears over 6800 times
in the Bible.
Yahweh also means Jehovah
The great Jewish commentator on the OT of the middle ages,
Moses Maimonides, said this about the name Jehovah.
All the names of God that occur in the scriptures are derived from
His works except one, Jehovah. And this is called the plain name
because it teaches plainly and unequivocally of the substance of
God.
The word Jehovah means I AM. It comes from the verb which
means to be or to exist.
13

In Exodus 3:14 when Moses asked God what his name

was so he could tell the Israelites who had sent him, we
read, And God said unto Moses, I AM WHO I AM.
[Yahweh or Jehovah]
This is what you are to say to the Israelites; I AM has
sent me to you
Jehovah- The Eternal One. The Ever-Living One, The
Self-Existent one.
He lives from Eternity past to Eternity future, and
everything else that lives gets its life from HIM.
14

COMPOUND NAMES
The rest of the Names we are going to study are used in
conjunction with this name Jehovah. They are the
compound names.

Jehovah-Jireh
Jehovah-Rophe
Jehovah-Nissi
Jehovah-MKaddesh
Jehovah-Shalom
Jehovah-Tsidkenu
Jehovah-Shammah
Jehovah-Rohi

REVIEW
Elohim-- implies the covenant nature of God. I swear by
my name.
El Shaddai-- I am the Lord Almighty God
Adonai-- I am the One who owns and rules everything.
Yahweh (Jehovah)--The word Jehovah means I AM. It
comes from the verb which means to be or to exist.
Remember that GOD gives himself a name when he
wants to reveal a characteristic of himself
16

COMPOUND NAMES
The first compound name we are going to
look at is Jehovah-Jireh, and the first time
we find this is in the story of Abraham
taking Isaac to sacrifice him because God
asked him to. Lets pick up the story at
verse 9: Read Gen. 9-14.

17

JEHOVAH JIREH
Jehovah-JirehGod is my provider
Do you think its mere coincidence that the first time God supplies a
sacrifice thats its a Ram- a member of the sheep family. Later on
Jesus is called the Lamb of God who gave his own life willingly for
our sins.
In verse 15 we read that the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham
and said I swear by myself. We learned last week that Elohim
sometimes means to swear.
And in verse 17 God tells Abraham that he will surely bless him and
multiply his descendants, and through his offspring all nations will be
blessed, because Abraham obeyed him. So when you have a need
call to God by name, Jehovah Jireh, and he has promised to provide
all our needs.
18

JEHOVAH ROPHE
The next name is Jehovah Rophe. Lets read Ex 15:26.
The word Rophe means to heal, restore or cure. God
doesnt just heal, he is healing.
Malachi 4:2 God says But for you who revere my name,
the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its
wings.
Jesus is referred to as the sun of righteousness in Luke
1-78:79 when Zechariah was prophesying over his son
John the Baptist, John would go before the Lord to
prepare a way for him by which the rising sun will
come to us from heaven to shine on those living in
darkness..
19

JEHOVAH- NISSI
Jehovah-NissiGod is our banner
Read Exodus 17:15
Background of this story is that while Joshua was
fighting the Amalekites in the valley of Rephidim, Moses
stood on the mountain with his hands lifted to the Lord.
As long as Mosess hands were lifted the Israelites were
winning, but when his arms grew tired and he lowered
them they began to lose.
So Aaron and Hur sat Moses on a stone and they held
his arms high until Joshua won the battle.
So Moses made the altar and called it Jehovah-Nissi.
20

JEHOVAH-MKADDESH
Jehovah-MKaddesh-I am the Lord which sanctifies you.
Lev 20:8 Please read this.
The name MKaddesh was used to refer to the various
parts of the temple which were sanctified, or set apart for
the worship of God.
In the New Testament we become the temple of God
when we ask Jesus into our hearts. He comes and takes
up residence as God himself as Jehovah-MKaddesh, or
the Holy Spirit, and makes us holy for his use. He
sanctifies us!

21

JEHOVAH-SHALOM
Jehovah-Shalom- God is Peace
Please read Judges 6:24
Israel was being oppressed by the Midianites, because they were
doing evil in the sight of the Lord. Every-time they planted they
would be invaded and their crops would be destroyed.
They were at the point of hiding in the rocks, then God sent an
Angel to Gideon. Gideon was scared as you can imagine, but God
spoke to him in verse 23 and said Peace be unto thee; fear not:
thou shalt not die. So Gideon built the altar and called it JehovahShalom, meaning God is our peace.
The next time you are stressed or in fear call out to Jehovah-Shalom
for peace.
22

JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU
Jehovah-TsidkenuThe Lord Our Righteousness
Jeremiah 23 vs. 5-6 Please read
Background- King Josiah had instituted reforms to try
and bring the people back to God, but they were still
rebellious.
The spiritual leaders had lied to the people and scattered
the followers of God. But as we read in vs. 6 Jeremiah
prophesied that the Lord would bring forth a righteous
branch of David, (Jesus) that will reign wisely, and do
what is just and right in the land. He will be called the
Lord of Righteousness. Jehovah-Tsidkenu.
23

Righteousness
Romans 4:3 Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as
righteousness.
Romans 4:13 It was not the law that Abraham and his offspring
received the promise.but through the righteousness that comes by
faith.
Matthew 5:6 In the beatitudes Jesus says, Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
1 Cor. 1:30 Paul says that it is because of God that we are in Christ
Jesus who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our
righteousness, holiness, and redemption.
2 Cor. 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in
him we might become the righteousness of God.
24

Righteousness
When we fall, stumble or sin Satan tries to tell us
that we are unworthy and guilty, or inadequate
to do anything for God.
That is when we have to stand firm and remind
Satan that Christ who lives in us has made us
righteous. We must confess our sins and declare
the name of Jehovah-Tsidkenu. We can be bold,
not in our righteousness, but in HIS!
25

JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH

Jehovah-Shammah God is with us.

Ezek 48:35
In this chapter Ezekiel is describing the Holy City of God and a new temple
and he declares that the name of the city will be The Lord Is There.

Earlier in chapter 10 Ezekiel had a vision of the Glory of the Lord departing
from the temple. But in chapter 48 he sees the Glory returning.

The fire that left the temple in Ezekiels day returned on the day of
Pentecost and rested on the Apostles, and now dwells inside all who
believe.

God is HERE, he lives inside of us. You are never alone, JehovahShammah lives inside you, and he has promised never to leave you or
forsake you.

26

JEHOVAH-ROHI

Jehovah-Rohi-The Lord is my Sheperd

This is an observation of Harriet-Louise Holland Pattersons of shepherding

while she was visiting Palestine.

Shepherding does not change much in Palestine, where wild beasts may
descend still upon unprotected sheep and suddenly destroy them. The
Palestine shepherd lives night and day with his animals. He establishes a
degree of intimacy with them which is touching to observe. He calls them by
their names, and they knowing his voice and hearing his only, heed.

He protects the sheep from thieves and preying animals who would devour
them at night by sleeping in the often makeshift sheepfold and they, sensing
his watchfulness, fear no evil.
He provides pasture and water, even in the wilderness and the presence of
enemies and they, casting all their anxiety upon him, are fed. There is a
singular communion between the shepherd and his sheep which, after one has
visited Palestine and observed it, makes the symbol of the Good Shepherd ,
peculiarity apt and the Twenty-third Psalm strangely moving.

27

PSALM 23
Psalm 23
This psalm contains all of these names!
The Lord is my shepherd (Jehovah-Rohi); I shall not
want. (Jehovah-Jireh our provider).
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth
me beside the still waters (Jehovah-Shalom our peace).

He restoreth my soul (Jehovah-Rophe our healer): he

leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names
sake (Jehovah-Tsidkenu our righteousness).
28

Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of

death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me (JehovahShammah- He is with us); thy rod and thy staff they
comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of
mine enemies (Jehovah-Nissi our standard of Victory);
thou anointest my head with oil (Jehovah-MKaddesh
our holiness; our sanctification); my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days
of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

YOUR NAME

We have learned a lot about the names of God today but do you know what the
most important name to God is?
It's Your name.
The only name God really cares about is YOUR Name, and he wants to write it
in the lamb's book of life. The bible says that he knew you before you were
formed in your mother's womb, so he knows your name, and he wants to
inscribe it in the book of life, but the only way he will do that is if you give him
permission.
And the only way to give him that permission is to accept his Son as your Lord
and Saviour.

It also says in Zephaniah that he will write your name on a white stone in
heaven.

Are you willing to give him permission to write your name in the book and on a
white stone in heaven?
