GlobalEditorBasics
TheGlobalEditorisoneofthemostpowerfultoolsinPHDWin.Itallowstheusertoeditall,oranysubsetofcasesinthe
projectatonce.ThistutorialwillcoverthebasicfunctionalityoftheGlobalEditor.Specifictasksmayhavetheirown
tutorialsundertheappropriatesectionofthetutoriallist.
Aftercompletingthistutorial,youwillbeableto:

GlobalEditor
Whiletheterm"global"mightimplythatthechangeswillaffecteverythinginthefile,thatisnotquitethecase.Featuresin
PHDWinsuchasfilters,andpartnersmaylimitthecasesthatareaffectedbytheGlobalEditor,beforethiswindowiseven
open.TheGlobalEditorcanonlyaffectthosecasesthatarecurrentlyvisibleintheCaseList,sothosecasesthatare
filteredout,orthatdonotexistinthecurrentlyactivepartnerareautomaticallyexcludedfromtheappliedchanges.
Inaddition,theCaseSelectiontaboftheGlobalEditorgivestheuserultimatecontroloverwhatcasesaretobeaffectedby
theeditsmadehere.BydefaulttheCaseSelectionTabwillselectPredefined:AllCases.Ifleftonthissetting,theglobal
editwillindeedaffectallthecasesintheCaseList(again,withtheexceptionofthosefilteredoutbyotherfeatures).The
dropdownmenuwillcontainany"ReportGroups"createdbytheuserinthisproject.
Note:IfyouareunfamiliarwithFilters,PartnersorReportGroups,thatisokay,thesearealloptionalfeatures,andthe
GlobalEditormaybeusedwithoutanyofthoseineffect.

GlobalEditorTabs
TheGlobalEditorismadeupofmany"Tabs"thatlogicallyorganizethefunctionsthatmaybeperformedonagloballevel.

Toselectagroupofcases,firstyouwouldhitthe"ClearAll"button.Thisremovesallthecasesfromthelist,allowingyou
toessentiallystartwithacleanslate.
Next,clickingthe"Select"buttonwillopenyourCaseList.OncetheCaseListopens,youmayselectthedesiredcasesby
draggingthemfromtheCaseListtotheGlobalEditorwindow.Youcanuseanyofthemethodsforquicklyselectingcases
intheCaseListasdescribedintheCaseListBasicsTutorial.

GlobalEdits
Oncethecaseshavebeenselected,thenextstepistolocatethetaskthatyouwouldliketheGlobalEditortoperform.As
mentionedpreviously,thetasksthatcanbeperformedthroughtheGlobalEditorarebrokendownbytabstomakethem
easiertofind.
MostofthetabsintheGlobalEditorhaveaverysimilarlook.Thetopportionofthewindowshowsalistofavailabletasks
thatmaybeperformed.Thebottomsectioniswheretheuserwillfillinanyadditionaloptionsthatpertaintoselectedtasks.

Toselectatask,theuserlocatesitinthelistatthetop,thendragsittothebottomsection.Onceataskislistedinthe
bottom,additionalfeaturesandsettingsmaybefoundinthecolumnslistedinthebottomsection.Theexampleabove
showstheoptionsforapplyingapricemodel.Oncetheoption"ApplyModel"hasbeendrugfromthelistofavailable
optionstothebottomsection,theusermustthenspecifywhattypeofmodeltheyareapplying(PriceModelorEscalation
Model),thentowhatproductthemodelistobeapplied,andfinallytheymustidentifywhichmodelistobeapplied.
Asshownintheexampleabove,theuserisnotlimitedtoonetaskatatimeintheglobaleditor,andmayevenbringthe
sameoptionfromthelistofavailablefieldsintothebottomsectionmultipletimes.

UsingtheGlobalEditorExercise
Followtheinstructionsfortheexercisebelow.Theexercisemustbecompletedcorrectlybeforeyoucanmoveforwardwith
thetutorial.

AutoBackups&TheGlobalEditor
BecausetheGlobalEditorissuchapowerfultool,thechangesmadeherearewidespread,andtheycannotbeundone,it
isoneofthefeaturesthatcanbeprotectedbytheAutoBackupfeature.AutoBackupisasettingthatcanbeturnedonin
theMiscTaboftheSystemPreferences.Whenturnedon,PHDWinwillprompttheuseriftheywouldliketocreatea
backupfilebeforeperformingtheglobaledit.Thissafetynetofsortsallowstheusertoprotectthecurrentstateofthe
project,beforeapplyingtheglobalchange,justincasetheresultsarenotwhatwasexpected,ordesired.
Oncetheuserhits"Apply"toapplythechangessetintheGlobalEditor,theywillbepromptedtosaveabackupcopyof
thedatabasebeforethosechangesareapplied.

Note:RememberthatyoumustcloseanyopenprojectsbeforeyouwillbeabletoaccessyourSystemPreferences
windowfromtheFilesMenu.
