Robb and Brienne Stark are a young,
married couple with a mixed-use
housing space above a law office
located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Robb is an American musician and
Brienne is a Finnish freelance
photographer. Together they enjoy
traveling, photography, and collecting
records. The Starks prefer a
Scandinavian style with modern
elements throughout. Custom
designed built-in storage with display
spaces is a necessity within the home
as well as a music room.

The Italianate architectural style was
popular in commercial buildings
throughout the 1880s and spread
across the country (Italianate). This
spread was a reaction to the classical
ideas and rigid planning of the
Renaissance period (Italianate). The

CONCEPT STATEMENT
Stark Residence Concept Statement

The Stark residence will be clean and tailored to fit the young, modern couple. The
residence will exude a bright, sleek, dramatic, and welcoming image that is
representative of the Scandinavian tradition. The use of monochromatic tones with
splashes of unique bright blues and copper accessories will provide a sense of harmony
within the residence. Bold vertical lines will be used throughout the dwelling offset by
the use of minimalistic horizontal lines to provide a dramatic contrast while preserving a
sense of flow. Clean edges and an open floor plan will provide a sleek, comfortable,
and accommodating residence for the couple. Modern furniture in a variety of solid
textured fabrics will provide a cool, relaxing, and serene ambiance to the space. The
open floor plan, unique furnishings, cool color palette, and use of bold vertical lines will
cohesively work together to produce a clean, modern Scandinavian design.

CODES ANALYSIS/UPDATES
Rationalize why or why not the existing building should be expected to conform
to the code
The existing building should not be expected to conform to this code from the
2015 International Building Code for Existing Buildings. According to Section
804.2.2 the building is required to have automatic sprinkler protection when exits
or corridors are serving an occupant load greater than 30. This would not be
applicable to this building.
The existing building should be expected to conform to this code. According to
Sections 804.4.1.6 a fire alarm system shall be installed in work areas of Group R-2
apartment buildings as required by the International Fire Code for existing Group
R-2 occupancies.
The existing building should not be expected to conform to this code.
According to Exception 12 under Section 803.2.1 one- and two-family dwellings
are excused from this code.
The existing building should be expected to conform to this code. According to
the Exception under Section 803.4 any existing interior finish materials that do not
comply with the interior finish requiremetns of the International Building Code
shall be permitted to be treated with an approvded fire-retardent coating in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to achieve the required rating.
Importance of Codes

Discuss how important codes are in residential design. Explain how knowing this information
will specifically advance your future application of code factors while designing. Provide at
least two examples.
Codes are essential in the designing process and having in -depth knowledge of these codes will save
both time and money while providing the safest space for clients. If a designer takes the time to
create an entire set of construction documents but fails to include any of the important safety codes,
then time will be wasted when the plans have to be completely redrawn to bring the documents up
to code. This would waste valuable time on a building or renovation project costing the client more
money as well as wasted time. A very important code that always needs to be adhered by when
renovating is the Means of Egress code from the International Existing Building Code Section 805. This
code dictates how many exit doors are required for a space, the type required, and the maximum
distance from multiple locations within the space (2015). If this code is not properly followed plans
would have to be redrawn and a whole new layout may have to be created. Another important
code that is important to know is the Automatic Sprinkler System guidelines located in Section 804.2 of
the International Existing Building Code. This code outlines which buildings are required to be
equipped with an automatic sprinkler system, how they are installed, and where they are to be
placed (2015). When planning a space, it is important to know if a sprinkler system will need to be
installed because plumbing will be needed to provide water for the system. If a designer creates an
entire layout and neglects the need for sprinkler plumbing that plan would have to be completely
redrawn to meet the code. Having knowledge of different codes, and where they apply, before
planning a project will save time, energy, and money for both the client and the designer while
maximizing safety in the space.
Sprinkler Systems

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using sprinklers in residential applications.

Identify if sprinkler systems are required in new residential construction in your locality. Explain
if you feel they should be required in all renovations of existing residential buildings.
There are many advantages and disadvantages of using sprinklers in a residential application. One
disadvantage is the cost of installation. Sprinkler systems can cost around $2,000 to install in an
average townhouse averaging 2200 square feet (Cost 18). That is a large sum to add when building
or renovating a residential building. Another disadvantage could be the aesthetic look of the sprinkler
head within the residence. However, studies have proven that sprinkler systems within a residential
home are actually very beneficial for the homeowner. According to the U.S. Department of
Commerce National Institute of Standards and technology, a homeowner would essentially save
about $5,000 over a thirty-year period with a sprinkler system within the residence. This is based on
fatalities, injuries, uninsured property loss, as well as an insurance credit for owning a home equipped
with a sprinkler system (Cost). In Swansboro, North Carolina sprinkler systems are not required in new
residential construction; however, there are some circumstances where they might be encouraged.
The International Existing Building Code has an extensive section on automatic sprinkler installation
and requirements and sometimes existing residential buildings will require sprinklers, while others will
not (2015). Sprinkler systems are proven to eventually save money, reduce loss of life, and protect
uninsured property within the home.

JUSTIFICATION
Justification
The Stark residence is a combination of modern Scandinavian furniture, finishes, and
accessories that work cohesively together to create a cool and comfortable house for
the couple. I developed my design concept based on the client profile, interests,
building style, and functionality. My design goal was to provide a pleasing space for
the young couple that would appear effortlessly clean, aesthetically pleasing, and
reflect the couple. The furniture is very Scandinavian in design and has different
elements that accommodate the Starks. Accessories throughout the house such as the
globe and bicycle in the living room reflect their love of travel. Similarly, the
gramophone in the dining room is symbolic of their love of music. Working through
different schematic plans helped me to identify different areas of the home that
needed to be tweaked in order to provide the Starks with the best possible layout of
rooms as well as furniture. It was important to consider how the Starks would live within
the space and how they would interact with the pieces. I had to keep clearances and
convenience in mind while designing the area for the Starks.
REFLECTION
Reflection
I have thoroughly enjoyed working through this class and completing the different
exercises. The main concept that I will carry on throughout my studies is the process of
working, reworking, and then finalizing any interior design decisions. This process of
repeatedly setting up a space really helped me to see different advantages and
disadvantages to each different design. This will help provide the best work for the
client. The second concept that I will use is perspective drawing. I realized that my
perspective skills were not very good and have continued to attempt to improve. This is
helpful for assisting clients in visualizing the space before committing to a design. The
final concept that I will continue to use is the drafting techniques. When setting up the
different schematic floor plans I improved my skills within AutoCAD. I look forward to
continue honing these skills as I believe that AutoCAD will be instrumental in my career.
I think that the compiled construction drawings, presentation boards, and project
notebook could all be beneficial to me within a portfolio.
