A letter from the desk of

JA N E G RE E N

I am thrilled to tell you about my new novel, Falling, not least because
I have finally gone back to my roots with a big, sweeping love story, my
first true love story since Jemima J days!

As some of you know, ten years ago I moved to a tiny beach cottage in

Westport, Connecticut, and even though I really didnt like the beach,
or the feeling of sand between my toes, I fell completely in love with

living there . . . and shortly thereafter fell completely in love with my

landlord!

Beloved, as he has always been known, is now my husband. For the past
ten years people have asked me over and over whether I would write our
stor y, and I always said no . . . until now.

Although the story of Falling really isnt ours, it is Dominic and

Emmas. And Jesses. It is the story of an English girl renting a beach

cottage in a quest to find happiness and herself, only to fall in love with
her landlord, and his quirky, sometimes difficult, six-year-old son.

But life doesnt always go to plan, and fate inter venes to threaten
ever ything Emma holds dear . . .

I hope you love this book. And I am sending you my gratitude and love
for coming with me on the journey all these years.

Would you have been willing to

uproot yourself all alone and move

someplace where you had only one
person for support? Why or why not?

What did you think of the turn-

around Emmas parents made when they

met Jesse? Do you think that perhaps
Emma had the wrong impression of
her parents all along?

Have you met a person that you felt a

the friendship last over time?

Have you ever been on a path in

Were you surprised by the ending of

FALLING
One of the f irst steps Emma takes in upgrading her Westport cottage is fixing up
Dominics crooked shelves. Try some of these Falling inspired hacks and projects to give your
space Emmas fresh new look.

Use a high gloss paint on

bookshelves, and paint the back

a glossy dark color, or wallpaper
it, to make your books stand out.
Tip: You can remove the back
panel of your bookcase and use
spray adhesive or a hot glue gun
to lay down the wallpaper and
then screw the panel back on.

Turn a magazine rack or a folder

holder on its side to create a corner

bookshelf. Paint, stain or decoupage
your magazine holder (or leave it plain).
Pre-drill two holes for the screws and
mark your wall where the screws will
go, making sure they are level. Mount
your box to the wall, using washers so
the screw heads dont sink too far into
the wood.

FALLING

Use the spines of torn or

otherwise damaged books

to create a hidden storage area for

your bookshelf. Leave the front cover
on one of the books and the back
cover on another to use as the sides
of your box. This would be perfect
for spare remotes, cables, router, or
anything else you wish to keep out of
site but accessible. For step-by-step

DINE

Dominic is made for Emma, and these recipes from Jane Greens
cookbook, Good Taste, are made for your Falling book club meal.

Daily Baby Back Ribs

Every Christmas Eve, we decide to invite a handful of

friends for cocktails, hors doeuvres, and then, quite by
mistake, we seem to have stumbled upon the unlikely
decision to make ribs.
It started with my friend Glenn, the rib man, who
one year borrowed a friends smoker and made dozens
of enormous racks of ribs, dripping with a syrupy
glaze that were delicious. The friend with the smoker
disappeared, and I started to make the ribs myself,
experimenting with different rubs and glazes, for I am
not a huge fan of barbeque sauce.

I ngredients

3 racks pork baby back ribs

2 tablespoons onion powder
6 cloves garlic, crushed
tablespoon hot paprika
tablespoon salt
cup maple syrup

Glenn came over last year with his magic rub, and told
me to slow cook the pork, taking it out at the end and
covering it with brown sugar, putting it back in to melt
the sugar deliciously over the pork.
It was delicious, but it was also unnervingly sweet,
like eating dessert and dinner at the same time. Many
days later, Glenn admitted he had forgotten it wasnt
supposed to be brown sugar, but maple syrup.

M ethod

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

I started experimenting, and this is the recipe my whole

family has fallen in love with. It is also the food that I
am ashamed to admit I eat on a weekly basis. I cook
up huge batches, separate them, and have them at least
twice a week.

2. Combine onion powder, garlic,

paprika and salt. Divide into 3,
and rub into ribs.

5. Cook for 45 minutes uncovered.

3. Cover with aluminum foil and

cook for 3 hours.
4. Uncover and glaze ribs with
maple syrup.

Lemon and Almond Tart

One of my most favorite people in the world is my

sister-in-law, Fishy. I was already living in the States
when she became my sister-in-law, which is unfortunate on two levels. First, I dont get to see her nearly as
often as I would like and second, I dont get to experience her cooking.
My parents are always going over there for dinner and
reporting back about delicious roast chickens and fantastic lamb. She is the expert at delicious, traditional,
effortless comfort food and one of her best dishes, according to my mother, is her lemon and almond tart.

l cups almond flour

teaspoon almond extract
tablespoons sugar
large eggs, separated
lemon, boiled in water for
20 minutes, pips removed,
then pured to mash.
Pinch of salt
cup toasted slivered almonds
Confectioners sugar

There really is nothing better than lemon and almond

tart, particularly this one that is so densely citrusy,
thanks to the pured lemon. The almond extract and
thick, moist texture makes it almost taste like marzipan, and the entire tart is heavenly.

M ethod

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Butter and flour a 6 tart pan and line with
waxed paper.
3. In food processor combine almond flour
and sugar. Separately combine egg yolks,
2 tablespoons sugar, lemon pure and salt,
and beat until smooth. Add almond mixture. Beat egg whites to soft peaks, add
rest of sugar. Beat 1 large spoonful of egg whites into almond mixture, then fold rest
of almond mixture into egg whites.
4. Transfer to pan and bake for 35 minutes.
5. Carefully remove from the pan, garnish with blanched slivered
almonds and dust with confectioners sugar sprinkled through a fine
meshed sieve before serving.
