pH Control

Objective: To design and test a controller that will optimize

control of pH in a bioreactor
GROUP A-7
MINH DAO CHRIS MASE ADAM RICE HONG ZHANG

Overview
Bioreactor is modeled by a solution of
Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS).
Probe acquires real-time pH reading of
solution and sends reading to controller.
Controller outputs either positive or negative
voltages to power acid/base pump.
Settings of controller determine the response
time, offsets, or oscillations within process.

Results
P-Control: quick response,
offset
PI-Control: slow response,
no offset, oscillation
PD-Control: slow response,
offset

Results Continued
Utilized optimal P and I
parameters at P = 10% and I = 10s
PID with derivative time = 20s
produced the quickest response
time and no offset
Low derivative time produced
oscillation

Conclusions & Recommendations

PID-control produced the fastest response and eliminated offset when P = 10 %, I = 10 s, and D = 20s.
Ends of pump tubings should be hung above buffer solution.
Bring a USB Drive and organize data.
