Hardware selection
It is important to choose the right hardware when using Process Historian.
Before you opt for a particular hardware, the expected tag and alarm load must be
determined or estimated. It must be clarified in advance how long the data will be
stored in the Process Historian. These values should help you determine the hard
disk size. One can only determine the right hardware after completing this process.
Process Historian is not a circular log. This means that the data is not overwritten
after a predetermined period. The Process Historian generates database segments
until the hard disk capacity is exhausted. To prevent the hard disk capacity from
running low, you can automatically back up database segments and delete the
data from the database after a successful backup. This ensures that the PH is not
prevented from logging data due to a lack of hard disk space. For the database
segment backups, one needs to provide the necessary storage space.
Based on the available hard disk size, an IPC 847D can only be used for small
quantity structures. Hardware recommendations for small, medium and large
quantity structures can be found in the Process Historian product documentation.
Note
1.2
Note
Segmentation
With regard to the segmentation, please also take heed of the Process Historian
product documentation.
In Process Historian, there are runtime segments and archive segments.
A database segment in the Process Historian is the quantity of all the data in
a defined time range. If you choose a weekly segmentation, then a database
segment will contain all the data recorded in one week.
The preset value for the segmentation is:
Time range of one segment = 1 week
Number of prepared segments = 3
Total number of runtime segments = 8
This is a sensible preset value, which fits most applications.

1 Introduction
Runtime segments
Runtime segments are usually uncompressed and therefore take up more space
on the hard disk. Runtime segments are distinguished by the fact that they are
always in the online state and the PH can write data in the runtime segments.
The runtime segments are visible in the Segmentation menu of the PH
Management Console (MMC).
Figure 1-2

1 Introduction
The Process Historian creates segments continuously for a defined time interval.
To ensure that all data can be saved regardless of the time stamp, there is an
upper and a lower "catch-all" segment. The specific segments collect all incoming
data that lie outside the current runtime segments. These segments are called
"catch-all-upper" (CAU) and "catch-all-lower" (CAL). The CAL and CAU segments
are permanently available and cannot be erased, removed or set to offline.
Number of uncompressed segments = "Total number of runtime segments"
+ CAL segment + CAU segment = "Total number of runtime segments" +2.
In the above example: Number of uncompressed database segments = 4+2 = 6.
This means that 6 segments are always uncompressed.
Archive segments
Archive segments can be seen in the PH MMC menu "Backup/Restore".
An archive segment may be on an online or offline state.
If an archive segment is in the online state, the pH can have read access to the
data.
If an archive segment is in an offline state, it means that the data has been
successfully backed up in a backup file and the data has been deleted from the
database. The pH can only access the data again when the database segment
is in the "online" state.
In this sense, the meaning of "Set offline" = delete data of a segment from the
database. "Restore" = restore data of a database segment.

1 Introduction
Required storage period of the data in the PH database = 2 years = 104 weeks
Determining the number of uncompressed and compressed segments
Number of uncompressed database segments = 8 + 2 = 10 weeks
Number of compressed database segments = 104 -10 = 94 weeks
Required space for uncompressed values
10[weeks] x7[days] x 24[hours] x 60[minutes] x60[seconds] x800[variables/s]
x63[Bytes] /(1024[KB]x1024[MB]x1024[GB]x1024[TB]) = 0.277 [TB]
Required space for compressed values
94[weeks] x7[days] x 24[hours] x 60[minutes] x60[seconds] x800[variables/s]
x12[Bytes] /(1024[KB]x1024[MB]x1024[GB]x1024[TB]) = 0.496[TB]
Required space for messages
104[weeks] x7[days] x 24[hours] x 60[minutes] x 2[alarms/min]
x4096[Bytes]/(1024[KB]x1024[MB]x1024[GB]x1024[TB]) = 0.008 [TB]
Total required space
Required space for raw data = 0.277[TB]+ 0.496[TB]+ 0.008[TB] = 0.781[TB]
Required space for PH internal data aggregation = + 6% of the storage
capacity for tags = (0.277[TB] + 0.496[TB]) x 0.06 = 0.046[TB]
Planned buffer = 0.1[TB]
Total required storage space = 0.781[TB] + 0.046[TB] + 0.1[TB] = 0.927 [TB]
Conclusion
In this example, the hard disk should have a capacity of about 1 [TB].

CAUTION
Please also follow the pH and IS installation notes (see chapter 6 Related
literature).
The Process Historian 2014 and the Information Server 2014 are released
for use in both the PCS 7 and WinCC environments. Only the PCS 7
documentation applies with regards to the installation requirements in the
PCS 7 environment.
The installation requirements on the product DVD 1 in the path "<DVD
drive>: 27b_PH+IS_Install_and_Release Notes\German\InstallNotesPRHIdeDE.pdf" differ from the PCS 7 installation
requirements.
For example, in the PCS 7 environment the MS Server 2012 is not a valid
operating system base for the pH and the IS.

Introduction
PCS 7 OS server and OS single stations for PCS 7 V8 are used for the long-term
storage of data using the Process Historian. The "PH-Ready" component must
be additionally installed for communication between the OS and the PH.
There are two options here:
1. Installation of an OS server for the Process Historian
2. Subsequent installation of the "ProcessHistorian Ready" component on an
existing OS server / single station
After completing the installation of the PH-Ready component on the OS, the
"CCCAPHServer" service is installed to aid communication with the PH.

NOTE
The Process Historian is mainly designed for use within a domain or workgroup.
Please note that the rules and restrictions of the respective domain group can
hinder the installation. In this case, the computer must be disconnected from the
domain before Microsoft Message Queuing, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and
WinCC can be installed. Log on to the computer concerned locally with your
administrator rights. Carry out the installation. After successful installation, the
WinCC computer can be reconnected to the domain.
If the rules and restrictions have no effect on the installation, the computer must
not be separated from the domain during installation. Please note that the domain
specifications can also affect the operation. If these specifications cannot be
circumvented, it is recommended to operate the WinCC computer in a workgroup.
To do so, contact the domain administrator if necessary.

The installation wizard for the creation of the Process Historian database is used
exclusively for creating and setting up the initial configuration of this database.
The installation wizard for the PH database runs once after running the PCS 7
setup program. If the same network path is selected in a renewed manual call
of the installation wizard, the existing database will be deleted.

hard disk access time is too high for all the data to be written to one hard disk.
The distribution of the data to be written can be achieved with the "Advanced"
installation mode. From about 3000 tags / s, one should distribute the data
across different hard disks.

4 Commissioning
There is no connection to a physical data source and there are no tags and alarm
messages saved. Every OS system with data stored on it is regarded as a source.
The PH receives the configuration data from each configured Runtime OS system.
When using a redundant OS, the two physical devices are regarded as a source
system and the archive configuration data is transmitted from both devices. In
a redundant OS, runtime data is only sent from the current Master OS to the PH.
2. Open the WinCC Explorer on the OS server and start the loaded OS project.

Scenario
The operator station is configured for storing long-term relevant archive tags on the
PH-computer. The OS has been loaded and is in runtime mode. The PH is also in
runtime mode, but no tags and alarm messages are stored.
Recommended system tests and measures
1. Use the PH computer name to ping the PH-computer from the OS. The reply to
the ping should be received within a few ms. If the ping does not work, there is
a network problem.
2. Use the OS computer name to ping the OS computer from the PH. The reply to
the ping should be received within a few ms. If the ping does not work, there is
a network problem.
3. Use the PH computer name to ping the PH computer from the PH itself. The
reply to the ping should be received within a few ms. If the ping does not work,
there is a network problem.
4. If you have network problems, check if the "hosts" file is being used and if all
registered IP addresses point to the right computer names. You can find the
"hosts" file in the directory "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc".
5. Check if the "CCCAPHServer" service has started on the OS.

5 Troubleshooting
Check whether the "ProcessHistorian.cfg" file was created and if the PH computer
name is correct.
The engineering system creates a "ProcessHistorian.cfg" file for each OS project,
whose data is stored on the PH. This file is present in each OS and includes the
PH computer name and the names of the MS message queues used. The
"ProcessHistorian.cfg" file is located in the root directory of the OS project.
If the "ProcessHistorian.cfg" file has not been created, check the PCS 7 project in
terms of PH configuration and compile the OS.
NOTE
If the OS single station runs on the ES, you have to use the "Assign Archive
Server" button, located in the object properties of the OS.

5.4
Scenario:
The operator station is configured for storing long-term relevant archive tags on
the PH-computer. The OS has been loaded and is in runtime mode. The PH-Ready
configuration on the OS has been checked but no tags and alarm messages are
stored on the PH.
Recommended system tests and measures
1. Use the OS computer name to ping the OS computer from the PH and vice
versa. The reply to the ping should be received within a few ms. If the ping
does not work, there is a network problem.
2. Check whether the status of the PH is set to "Active". If the PH-Status is not
"Active", set it to "Active" from the PH management console. Just choose
"Start" and then click "Go".

3. Use the Automation License Manager and the PH MMC to check whether all
necessary licenses are available. The PH does not function without a valid
license.
Figure 5-15
4. Check if PH errors are shown in the PH MMC "Diagnosis" menu and remedy
any problems.
5. Check whether queues have been generated on the PH. To do this, open

If you then receive data results, the PH has received the configuration data from
the OS.
If you get no results after this SQL query, yet the PH seems to be fine, check the
OS. Restart the PH. If possible, restart the OS, and check again to see if the PH
now receives configuration data from the OS.
5. If it is a redundant OS system, check whether the store and forward buffer on
the OS is synchronized.
