Choices RE 1

School: St. Gabriels School

Year Level: Reception
Topic/Title: Religion/Choices
Content Description (Catholic Education SA): Begins to demonstrate an awareness that choices have
consequences for themselves and others (Learning Outcome P.6)
Lesson Outcomes:
Students will begin to understand the relationship between choices and consequences and how best to make
choices that positively impact themselves and others.
Lesson Outline:
Introduce:
-

Gather students and discuss the concept of good choices introduced to the group by Mr. Williams the
previous day.

Play the choices song.

Tell the students that you are now going to read a story about making good choices.

Read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud

Discuss that when you make good choices you are also filling buckets and when you make sad choices
you might be emptying your own bucket or making someone else sad and emptying theirs.

Reiterate the importance of making good choices. Good choices make you feel better too.

Investigate:
-

Split the group into two, Amy to take one and Jordan to take the other.

Students to sit in a circle and in the centre are two bucks- a good choices bucket and a sad choices
bucket

Teachers have a pile of scenarios and ask students who are sitting nicely to decide whether it is a good
choice or a sad choice and place it in the appropriate bucket (have one student to pick up a scenario and
then ask one or two others to comment on why they agree or disagree with the choice made- note all
comments on a poster with the students name to assist in gauging student understanding)

Bring the class together and discuss what they found and what good and sad choices they were
exploring- do any of the scenarios apply to their daily lives, what sorts of choices do they make in their
day?

Remind them of the story of Zacchaeus bible story that Mr. Williams introduced them to in the last lesson

Introduce the worksheet to the students and explain that it will be assessed. To get a two you need to
demonstrate an understanding of good and bad choices and to get a three you need to explain some
choices that you make everyday, you can write them, or draw them or tell a teacher about them.
