Lab Report marking

Section

Under expectations

Objective and Relevant theory

We provide most of this information on
the work sheets. Details of the aim/
purpose and a diagram or photograph
of the equipment are to be included.
Theory should be related to the lab
work and linked in to the data collected
and the calculations. The source
reference must be given.
Assumptions
These must relate to the equipment
and processes used.
Method of data collection
Step by step detail description of what
you do in the lab.
Health & Safety
This is an essential component of any
industrial report and we are trying to
get you used to considering workplace
safety.
Raw data collected.
This must be the actual data collected
before any processing. Starting values
and set up values must be noted.
Calculations
These must be given for at least one
element in a spreadsheet for the full
set of data.
Use of Graphs/ charts/ tables
Most of the labs involve the
construction of at least one graph. The
students need to draw these correctly
and use the information in their
calculations.
Discussion
These must relate to the work
completed and the results produced.
New information must not be presented
here.

2 3 Met expectations

4 5
Exceeds expectations

Theory that is relevant and partially connected to the

work done.

State objective clearly in your own words.

Clear and concise theory related to the work
done and why it applies.
References given.

A simple list of relevant assumptions

Detailed list with an explanation and possible

impacts

Cut and paste from lab sheet

Brief description of the method followed with a

diagram or photograph of the equipment used.

Only immediately obvious

hazards mentioned.

Obvious hazards in the use of the equipment are

discussed and a wider laboratory view is considered.

Copies of the original hand

written data sheets are
included.

Tidy, neatly presented results, usually as a table.

Detailed information on how the work was

done written in own their words with
annotated pictures of the equipment used.
Obvious hazards in the use of the equipment
are discussed and a wider laboratory view is
discussed. The human consequences of
failing to adhere to safe practice are
discussed relevant to the particular situation .
Tidy, neatly presented results.
Any anomalies are identified for comment.

error

Calculations with no error

Calculations presented in a spread sheet. +

a set of sample calculation

Hand drawn graphs and the

information is not used or
commented on.

Correct type of graphs/ charts used

Lines are drawn correctly
Gradients / info are analysed correctly.
The results are used in the calculations.

Graphs/ charts are drawn correctly using the

values from a spread sheet table.
The results are used in the calculations.
The results are correctly interpreted and
relevant comments made.

Minor discussion.

The results are correctly interpreted and related back

to the underpinning theory.

The results are correctly interpreted and

related back to the underpinning theory.
Comments are made regarding the accuracy
of the results and suggestions for
improvements are made.

Conclusions

Not
includ

Conclusions are made but

not well connected to the
underpinning theory.

Section

The conclusions connect the results to the theory and

comment on the validity of the results.

objective and the results
