Laboratory-Quality Fluids lvleasurements at Reservoir Conditions

- in Real Time

NUMAR's MRILab provides a direct measurement of

contamination of live oil flowing from the reservoir as
they pass into the Reservoir Descripfion Tooi (RDTru)
sample chamber. MRILab provides downhole laboratory quality fluid measurements as an integral component of the RDT. MRILab measured relaxalion times on
reservoir fhids in-situ at kue reservoir conditions is an
important industry first, especially as the measured T1
and T2 and the self-diffusion coefficient D of the reservoir fluids tie directly into important fluid characteristics such as gas/oil ratio and viscosity. This is superior
to traditional reservoir fluid sampie processing involvirrg lransferring samples uphole at the well site for conventional laboratory analysis and more precise than
optical type devices, These measurements are significant for complelion and reservoir engineering plus
reservoir understanding,And they're available at the
rigsite well site immediately, where they will have the
most value.
This new MRI tool gives the operator measurements of
the hydrocarbon properfies that are:

Available immediately and at vastly reduced cost

compared to conventional laboratory measurements.
Surface laboratory PVT analysis is both expensive and
can take weeks or months to produce results. The aclual task of collecling a reasonably unconLaminated reservoir fluid sample itself can require significant rig time,
And during that time fhe clock is running on the well

operators' and other conLractors' time, rental equipment, and personnel costs. It is not uncommon for
physical drill stem tests for viscosily and other key
fiuid properties to cost the operator hundreds of thousands of dollars when all the expenses are calculated.

More accurate measurements of native oil than other

methods. Since the MRILab measurements take place
downhole, on reservoir fluids in place and unaltered,
there is no direct human manipulalion and no opporh, rnity for the errors that can occur in surface lab work.
The well operator can have complete confidence in the
viscosify and GOR measurement results on the native
oil in place in the reservoir.

Results available in real time at the rig site or by

remote viewing. Viscosify and GOR are important for
making complelion decisions, Producing this informaiion right away, at the rigsite, makes MRILab data infinitely more valuabie than surface lab data that may be
deiayed for over a month, Similarly, the MRILab is
equipped with real-time telemetry capability that
makes the results of the measurements viewable
remotely over a secure connection belween eiient and
the MRILab.

Technology
MRILab's patented process is
another breakthrough in NUMAR's
development of nuclear magnetic
resonalce imaging technology for
oil and gas operators. MRIGb com-

services and extends the application
of MRI technology in reservoir
fluids determination.
MRILab is specifically designed to
work with the Reservoir
Description Tool (RDTru). It can be
conveyed on wireline or drillpipe.
MRILab measures the magnetic resonance properties of the reservoir
fluids as the RDT pumps from the
reservoir into the borehole or sample chamber. Maximum working
pressLue 20,000 psi.
The Resonance Section contains the
magnet and the transmitter coil and
receiver coils. This section takes the
critical measurement - T1. The T1
measurement is made while flowi.g. Tz and diffusion are static
measurements.
The T1 distribution is important in

differentiating between highly

refined oil base mud filtrates and
native oil. The T1 characteristics of
these common filtrates are measured and cataloged so the data from
oil based filhates can be distin-
