Instructions: Have students practice counting the syllables of some common words. Then explain
that a haiku is a three-line form of poetry from Japan in which the first line has five syllables,
the second line has seven, and the last line has five. The subject is usually nature. Invite students
to develop a nature haiku on scratch paper, then write it on the lines. Finally let students draw a
picture to accompany their poem, and invite them to share their haiku with the class.
