Comm 1010 Informative Outline Sample

Specific Goal: My audience will learn the financial and patient benefits of using CEREC technology
in a dental office. CEREC technology allows for porcelain restorations to be completed in the office
in the same day.
Application: The audience may save money on treatment performed that they can extend to their
patients, making dentistry more affordable, or they can choose to add to their profitability.
Ethos: Primary I have been in the dental industry for 12 years, and have seen the financial benefits
as well as the patient benefits of CEREC technology.
Secondary Ethos: I will cite four references out loud in my speech.
Pathos: I will mention the embarrassment and frustration felt from patients and doctors in taking
impressions and relying on temporary crowns, but my main focus will be the option to increase
affordability and acceptance of treatment in a dental practice with CEREC technology.
Logos: I will use my current offices annual lab costs versus the annual costs of running a CEREC
machine to show how the savings can affect a dental practice. Also, in my PowerPoint I will include
an x-ray of the margins of a lab crown versus a CEREC crown, along with results from studies that
have been done.
Audience Assessment: My audience likely knows about CEREC technology, but have passed it over
because of the initial investment required.
Adaptation to Audience: Not all practices have the same fees, therefore, I will keep the
calculations simple, so they can apply it to their own situation.
Pattern of Organization: Chronological in the Introduction, Topical in the Body.

Introduction
Hook: Lab costs are reducing the profitability of your dental office.
A. There is a way to cut out the majority of lab costs incurred.
B. By using CEREC technology to complete porcelain restorations in-house rather than
sending them to the lab, the overhead of cost will be reduced, thus adding to the profit
of the office.
Thesis: The following report details the investigation of the implementation of CEREC
technology in a dental office and how it can decrease production costs, leading to long-term
profitability.
Preview: Ill share how to best incorporate CEREC and reduce your long term costs and
increase patient acceptance.
A. I will first discusses patient benefits.
B. I will then discusses the cost benefits of purchasing the technology comparatively with

the amount spent on lab costs last year.

C. I will also cover the initial costs that will be accrued when purchasing the necessary

equipment to begin doing restorations in-house with CEREC same day technology.
D. Finally, I will cover the training required to successfully integrate the technology into

your office.
1

Transition: Now that Ive given you a preview, lets look at what a CEREC is all about.
Body
I.

CEREC, which stands for Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics,

provides technology for completing ceramic restoration in-house during one dental visit.
(Kendall, Rohde and Associates, 2016) Because the software is digital, there is no need
to:
a. Take messy impressions, which can often be uncomfortable and cause some patients
to gag.
b. Send information to a lab and wait for weeks for the crown to be delivered to the
office and ready for placement.
c. The overall survival rate for the IPS e.max system has been calculated to be 96.6%.
(Fleming,2014)
a. This study gives us the ability to confidently place these crowns in patients
mouths, knowing that they are going to last.
b. Additionally, because they are digital images, there is less room for distortion
and the margins of the crowns are impeccable.

II.

CEREC restorations reduce the treatment timeline, and you dont have to rely on a
temporary crown that may be prone to falling out, or restrict patients chewing abilities.
(Logan, 2013)

Transition: Now let me show you just how much you could be saving.
I. The software has expanded in the last few years to make it possible to complete bridges,
implant abutments and implant crowns in office as well as single unit crowns.
a. Last year our lab costs totaled around $90,000 for 516 e.max crowns, 12 bridges, and 50
implant cases.
The following is a list of immediate lab savings that can be seen with the use of CEREC technology.

Crowns
Bridges
Implant cases
(abutment, scan post
and crown)

CEREC Cost

=$118.65

Total Saving per

case
$94.50
$345
$281.35

If the same amount of lab cases were completed with CEREC technology, the savings would look
like this:
516 crowns
12 bridges
50 Implant cases
Total:

Lab cost
$64,500
$5,400
$20,000
$89,900

CEREC Cost

$22,930.50

Difference

$4,140
$14,067.50
$66,969.50

As you can see, thats almost $67,000 in lab cost savings. With that amount of savings we could
explore the option of reducing the price of crowns for patients, which could be an added patient
benefit.
Transition: The savings are great, but Im sure you are wondering how much the initial cost is.
The following equipment and supplies will be required to begin using CEREC in your office:

CEREC AC With Omnicam

$68,995.00

CEREC MCXL Milling unit:

61,000.00

Ivoclar Programat Furnace:

5,600.00

Freight:

390.00

Estimated Taxes (6.85%)

Total Investment:

I.

$9,314.98
$145,299.98

Patterson recommends ordering scan bodies, implant abutment blocks, and bridge blocks on
a case by case basis, so you are not overrun with inventory.
All purchases made are a tax write-off for the practice and go toward your Patterson
Advantage Dollars which can be used to purchase or upgrade equipment.

II.

Transition: Now that the savings and cost have been covered, I will explain the training available.
I.

Free Introductory course. Patterson Dental Company is who you will be working with
for the purchases. Our local representative, Tammy Ota and CEREC Specialist, Jason
Wheeler extended an invitation to visit Sironas symposium in Scottsdale, AZ for free.
a. This course offers a chance to sit down with CEREC beta testers, for some hands on
experience and to see how the software is applied in an actual office setting.
b. They have live patient appointments scheduled that you can watch to see the timeline
of getting a crown done in the same day in less than two hours.

II.

Free Initial Training. After the purchase of the equipment there is a jump start training
that will be completed in your office at no cost.
a. This gives us the basic operating knowledge to begin using the software in our office.
Jason, our CEREC specialist will complete the training with the Doctor and all
assistants.
b. There is also a Webinar for our front office staff that will help them with the learning
curve of scheduling same-day appointments.

III.

Free Level 2 Training. Patterson recommends taking the Level 2 course after using the
equipment in your office after two months.
3

a. Waiting two months allows for a better knowledge of the learning curve, and gives
the users the opportunity to develop questions to ask the instructors, therefore
contributing to the class by making it more personalized.
b. The cost of the class is:

$2,500 Doctors
$900 Team Members

c. Tammy and Jason will authorize a training voucher for the Level 2 course for the
doctor and two assistants with the purchase of CEREC technology.
i. Thats a $4,300 value.
ii. A shuttle to the branch is available and meals are provided.
iii. We would be responsible for hotel reservations, which are offered at a
discount of 20% when booking for Sirona events.

Conclusion
CEREC has the potential to greatly increase not only our patient benefits and satisfaction,
but also, our profitability, expertise and relevance in the dental industry.
a. It is something we can get excited about, and in turn, our patients will be excited about
it as well.
I will leave you with a short testimonial from Dr. Brian Toorani on how CEREC
technology has impacted his office:
I believe that traditional dentistry can become repetitive and boring. Think about it:
you poke, you drill, you take a goopy impression, you temporize and you ask the patient to
come back a few weeks later. Then you poke them again, work in an irritated environment
and keep your fingers crossed that the lab did a great job, adjust contact, adjust occlusion,
polish and cement.
Now, with CEREC it all changes. Dentistry is no longer boring! It truly feels like I get paid to
play a video game all day. The best part is, you have less sensitivity, no temporary to come
off, no irritation of the tissue, and perfect occlusion, color and contact. Further, CEREC has
given me the full control of my restoration. I dont have to depend on anyone but myself and
my direct team. Additionally, I have significantly reduced my lab bill. With what I have
saved (after taking into account the additional payment for my CEREC machine), I will be
able to pay off my CEREC in less than 18 months. (Fleming, 2012)
