Thisisanintroductorycourseinjurisprudence(sometimescalledlegaltheoryorphilosophyoflaw).The
coursewillbeteamtaughtbyJonathanCroweandJimAllan.
Theterm'jurisprudence'capturesavastprovinceofintellectualspeculationaboutthenatureandroleof
law,legalsystemsandjustice.Jurisprudenceasafieldoflegalstudyislessconcernedwithknowledgeof
specificlawsorspecificlegalsystemsandmoreconcernedwiththeunderstandingofthephenomenonof
lawgenerally.Itaddressesquestionssuchas:
*Whatcountsasalaw?
*Whataretheessentialpropertiesoflaw?
*Whatformsdoeslawtake?
*Howislawcreatedorformed?
*Whatistherelationshipoflawtojusticeandmorality?
*Whatisthesocialpurposeoflaw?
*Whatarethebasictoolsoflegalanalysis?
Lawasasocialphenomenoncanbestudiedthroughtheprismsandwiththemethodsofjustabout
everydiscipline.Therearestudiesonthesociologyoflaw,anthropologyoflaw,psychologyoflaw,
historyoflaw,philosophyoflaw,economicsoflawandlogicoflaw,tonamejustafewmethodological
approaches.
Itisobviousthatonecoursecannotcovertheentireprovinceofjurisprudenceorevenanysubstantial
partofit.Whatispossibleistogivestudentsatasteofthekindsofspeculationsthathavedominated
legaltheorythroughtheagesandtointroducethemtonewwaysofthinkingaboutthelawthatwill

examinationwillonlybegrantedintheeventofacertifiedmedicalconditionorotherexceptional
