Sociology
DEFINITIONS
Sociology
He science of society and the social interactions taking place. Its focuses attention on all kinds
of social acts, social relationships, social organizations, social structures, and social processes.
The social facts it gathers include the recurrent and repetitive forms of behavior; the attitudes,
beliefs, values, norms, and social institutions which make up the social order. Sociology
studies not only the structure and function of social organization but also the changes which
take place within it. (Panopio, Isabel S. Sociology: focus in the Philippines, QC: KEN
incp., c1994., Fil 301 P91 1994, Filipiniana Section, University Library)
Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of
human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies,
and how people intera+ct within these contexts. Since human behavior is shaped by social
factors, the subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from
organized crime to religious cults; from the divisions of race, gender and social class to the
shared beliefs of a common culture; and from the sociology of work to the sociology of sports.
In fact, few fields have such broad scope and relevance for research, theory, and application of
knowledge. (http://www.asanet.org/page.ww?Section =Sociologists&name= What+is+
