TUBES, ALLOY STEEL, ASTM A269


FOR USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMPRESSION FITTINGS.

1.

GENERAL.
This MESC specification covers additional requirements and restrictions for the manufacturer and/or
supplier, when ordering stainless steel tubes in accordance with ASTM A269, all as specified in the
purchase order and/or relevant MESC description.
All standard codes (including amendments) and documents mentioned in this specification shall be
of the latest issue.
Tubes are intended to be used with compression fittings with metallic ferrule(s) as defined in MESC
76.39.

2.

MATERIAL.
The following materials, specified in the relevant MESC description, are subject to these
requirements:
- Aust. Stainless steel tube to ASTM A269-TP316 -UNS S31600.
ASTM A269-TP316L-UNS S31603.

3.

DESIGN.
The maximum working pressure shall be 413 bar at 38 degr C.
The tube safety factor shall be 4:1. (tube bursting pressure shall be at least 4 times the maximum
working pressure)
To ensure a leak-proof metal-to-metal seal, the ends of the tube shall have plain ends, be at a right
angle and the surface shall be free from scratches. The tubes shall be absolutely free from scale and
dirt.

DIMENSIONS.
Tube sizes:
- imperial: outside diameter in inches.
wall thickness in British imperial standard wire gauge (SWG).
- metric: outside diameter and wall thickness in mm.
Tubes shall be supplied in straight random lengths of approx 6m, unless otherwise specified.

5.

TOLERANCES.
The tolerances on the tube size(s) shall be according to the following standards:
- tube OD metric sizes
- to ISO 4200
- tube OD imperial sizes - to ASTM A269

6.

TESTING.
Electric Test:
- Eddy current testing in accordance with the requirements of ASTM A450 shall be carried out.
Hardness Test:
- Hardness of the tube shall not exceed HRB 90 at any point.
All examinations shall be carried out after final heat treatment.

MARKING.
Each length of tube shall be marked permanently over the entire length, in accordance with ASTM
A450.
Stencil marking shall utilize a water insoluble ink.
In addition to the marking requirements of ASTM A450, marking shall include the size, the wall
thickness in SWG or mm, the charge or heat number and the mill's/manufacturers symbol. this
symbol must be a specific manufacturers mark instead of a combination of standard characters.
Marking to be repeated at intervals of 500 mm.

8.

CERTIFICATION.
Tubes shall be provided with an ISO 10474-3.1 certificate.
The certificate shall be in the English language and shall state at least:
- mill's/manufacturers name and symbol.
- certificate identification number and date of issue.
- quantity covered.
- charge or heat number.
- material and manufacturing standard.
- chemical analysis.
- mechanical test results.
- temperature of heat treatment.
- the results of the examinations, as required by the relevant material standard and this
specification.
- dimensions, including SWG number or specified wall thickness (mm).
- number of different samples tested, as required by the relevant material standard and this
specification.
Stockist certificates are not acceptable.

9.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE.


Tube ends shall be plugged-off with plastic caps/plugs.
Tubes shall be shipped in seaworthy boxes in accordance with ASTM A700 or by agreement
between purchaser and manufacturer/supplier.
