Jeremy Barrett!
We had a great time this past Sunday celebrating
Jeremy Barretts graduation from Marine Corps boot
camp. Jeremy is home until next Tuesday and then he
will travel back to San Diego for a month of advanced
infantry training, and then 2 months training as a
combat engineer in North Carolina. Please pray for
Kearah and Gwendolyn and lets ask God how we can
best support our church family in this time!

AWANA is gearing up for the Fall!

Mini-Conference/Training, Monday,
August 8th, at Bible Baptist, Champaign,
Illinois at 6:30-8:30pm.
Leaders meeting at CEFCM on Tuesday,
August 9th, at 7:00pm that should last
roughly 1 hour.
From Trish Barrett while she attended
Jeremys graduation in SanDiego:
I can't count the number of people who
told us what a great leader our son is (he
was a squad leader in bootcamp). His Drill
Instructor said anytime I needed to
motivate him I would tell him to think about
his wife and daughter, that is why you are
here for them and he always did great and
was exactly the kind of leader we want.
Many of his platoon stopped to thank him.

This past Tuesday night we had our final Evangelism

is Relationships training at Los Zarapes. We were
joined there by Bill Allison as we discussed sharing
our testimony and inviting others to accept Jesus as
their Lord and Savior. It was a great night!
If you are interested in finding out how Evangelism
is Relationships see Pastor Jason or anyone you
see in this picture. Our hope going forward is not to
train this in a classroom, but instead around tables
together at local restaurants, coffee shops and in our
homes. If we believe that Evangelism is
Relationships then it must start with how we train!

William Temple defined worship as: the

capture of our conscience by the Word of God,
feeding our minds with the truth of God, purging
our imaginations by the beauty of God, opening
our hearts to the love of God, and devoting
ourselves to the purpose of Godalone.
I believe that Gods majesty is worthy of all
worship. The vehicle of worship, the church as
God has called her to Himself, isnt the problem
- It isnt the church, it isnt the steeple, but if you
open the doors whats left? All the people. It
makes me think about the author who obviously
desired to remain anonymous: Church would
be great if it werent for all the people. The
problem isnt the place of worship, but instead
the people of worship.
Over the next 4 weeks I want to share 4
thoughts addressing how the people of worship
need to see temptation of worship, the
instrument of worship, the misapplication of
worship, to truly find the joy of worship.
#1 THE TEMPTATION IN WORSHIP
I believe that the temptation in every
expression of worship is to take God in all His
majesty and try to make Him fit into our
definition of worship. We can put together
words, write chords, sing songs and say things
to Him in a certain way and styles that for us
defines how we see worship and then apply
that to what we believe best glorifies God. The
problem is that in doing so we can be tempted
to worship worship rather than worship God.
David Santistevan writing for Charisma
Magazine said: The question needs to be
asked: Are we in danger of worshiping
worship? The mood. The atmosphere. The
melody. The crowd. The emotion. Your favorite
worship leader or your favorite speaker. The
band. The performance. The feeling. Are we
being moved by the right things? Are our hearts
aimed in the proper direction? The problem with

our worship culture is that we equate worship

with an experience, a moment. We end up
caring more about and loving the worship
moment more than we love God. We end up
talking about worship more than we talk about
God. Our culture has made worshipan end in
itself, rather than what it should be - a way of
life to glorify God.
If we do everything perfect, in the perfect style
without a passion for His glory then what we
are offering is performance, not worship.
Ecclesiastes 5:1 Guard your steps when
you go to the house of God. To draw near to
listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of
fools, for they do not know that they are
doing evil.
This is a real danger which is why John writing
to the Christian community closes his first letter
to them not with doxology, as all other New
Testament letters do, but a clarification and
stern warning.
1 John 5:20-21 Little children, keep
yourselves from idols.
It is possible for our worship for God to
overshadow and lose the quality of our worship
to God. A place where worship itself can
become an idol. Where the how becomes
more important than the who and the why.
When we read Gods Word there is nothing
about the style of our worship, but it does say
plenty about the heart of worship.
Jesus talked of this same kind of heart in the
Sermon on the Mount when He said, Blessed
are the pure in heart for they will see God.
This is how we are to come to God in true
worship. Whether we are gathering together to
study, pray, hear the announcements, the call
to worship, and listening to the message. We
need to come humbly, with meek and contrite
hearts - listening with a longing to hear,
listening with a longing to be obedient and a
longing to be changed.
