PURPOSE
The subject of the instruction is a guidance of preparing and performing post welding heat
treatment (PWHT) of cladded elements with the use of electric furnace.
2.
GENERAL
PWHT can be performed only by competent operators with theoretical and practical knowledge of
PWHT issues and furnace service.
The furnace should be efficient and the uniformity of the temperature during process verified and
measured. All equipment which measure, control and record the temperature shall be calibrated
in specified intervals.
The main type of applied PWHT is stress relieving, which reduces excesive hardness in heat
affected zone (HAZ) of base material and stress in cladded metal and thus decreases risk of
cracks.
All necessary PWHT parameters are described and included in specified WPS, prepared by
welding engineer, according to standards, material certificates, contractual requirements and
technical data.
3.
4.
PWHT PROCESS
a) operator should familiarize with health and safety regulations of the work place;
b) before commence of process operator should check the compatibility of marking on the treated
detail with technical documentation and get acquainted with all relevant documentation and WPS
that will be followed;
c) detail subjected to treatment should be placed on furnace bottom on supports (i.e. pieces of
metal section, pipe etc.) to assure proper hot air circulation and uniformity of temperature during
the entire process and to avoid direct contact of the detail with furnace bottom thermal insulation
and heating elements;
d) to control and record the temperature of the detail continuously during heat treatment, one or
more thermoelements should be attached according to Ref. 5 and each of them deliver separate
measuring result, marked by different color on PWHT diagram. The number and location of
thermoelements depend on the size and shape of treated detail. Thermoelements are connected
to PC so all informations, parameters and diagrams of PWHT can be recorded, stored, forwarded
or printed out if necessary;

e) before covering the furnace bottom with casing operator should check the corectness of
arrangement of treated detail and thermoelements attachment;
f) PWHT parameters should be set according to relevant WPS, prepared by welding engineer,
and should be controlled during the entire process;
g) after PWHT is finished, the casing can be lift up and if the detail reach ambient temperature, it
is transported from furnace bottom to designated area with visible marking Hot element;
h) the treated detail is subjected to visual test, the marking is checked and cleaned and the
hardness is measured on surface which was cleaned from oxidies and scale and grinded to the
sound metal;
i) Heat Treatment Certificate that is printed and attached to the documentation shall contain at
least: the number of batch, informations that identify the treated detail, date of heat treatment,
number of furnace and controller, number of WPS and diagram, which describes PWHT
parameters (see Ref. 6);
