ASSEMBLY

All valves must be examined for signs of damage that may have occurred during transportation. Any
damage observed during the inspection should be documented in an inspection report. Serious damage
should be reported to WALWORTH in order to determine if repair or replacement of the equipment is
necessary.
Care must be exercised when unpacking the valve to avoid damage to the valve or injury to personnel.
Remove the end protectors from the valve ends. Clean the piping and valve of all foreign material. Weld
end preparations must be cleaned properly with a suitable solvent.
A pressure seal valve needs to have its body/bonnet bolts torqued down to the specified torque when the
valve is at operating temperature and pressure. This is necessary for the pressure seal ring to be properly
compressed. In order to ensure a pressure seal between the valves body and bonnet, it is essential that
bolt tightness be verified. Whenever open the valve and bring up the line pressure as close as possible to
normal operating pressure and temperature. Recheck and re-tighten body/bonnet bolts as necessary to
the values given in Tables 1. The bonnet is forced up into the seal ring with increasing pressure, which
in turn forces the seal ring to seal against the valve body.
The following procedure of recheck and re-tighten is used:
1. If possible fully open and firmly back seat the valve.
2. Remove one nut or cap screw at a time, thoroughly lubricate stud-nut threads and nut flats with an
approved lubricant or equivalent and torque to recommended values shown in Tables 1.
3. Remove opposite nut or cap screw and repeat procedure until all nuts or cap screws have been retorqued.
4. Recheck bolt torque by going once around clockwise.

Table1. Bonnet/Body Torque Values

The seal ring bolt tightness must be rechecked after operating test pressure and temperature has been
achieved. Without a live-loaded bonnet, bolt tightness will be lost when the system loses pressure. A
live-loaded bonnet may also lose some bolt load, due to vibration in transit or bolt creep. It is essential
to check live-loaded retainer bolt torque at operating pressure. Once torqued at operating pressure, no
future tightening of retainer bolting will be necessary, unless the valve has been dismantled. Check the
seal ring torque at operating temperature and if the leakage of seal ring happen, re-tighten the retainer
bolting.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Disassembly the valve only when the pipe line pressure is relieved from both sides of the valve.
Otherwise severe personal injury or damage to the valve may result. Put the valve in the partially
open position.
2. Before disassembling the valve refer to the valve drawing to become familiar with the
disassembly of the equipment. Ensure that all of the required replacement parts are available. A
chain block or similar lifting device may be necessary when disassembling large valves.
Disassembly of the valve can be performed either partially or totally. Partial disassembly of
either the valve internals or valve handwheel subassembly can be performed to allow access of
the area of the valve requiring maintenance.

NOTE
Use care when removing the bonnet assembly so as not to deform the seal ring or damage other critical
valve parts.
Use care when removing the stem-wedge assembly in order to prevent the wedge from detaching from
the stem and dropping into the body.
When removing the disc, carefully lift it out of the body in order to avoid striking the disc of seat and
causing unnecessary damage.

REASSEMBLY
The reassembly procedures are not as detailed as those provided for disassembly since, in most cases,
reassembly is performed in reverse order of the disassembly.
Ensure that the valve and all of the parts are thoroughly clean and free of oil, grease, rust, dirt or other
contaminants that may affect the operation of the valve.
