Third grade students will show growth in their ability to identify instruments
of the orchestra, characteristics of the instruments and how they are played,
and the family to which each instrument (or group of instruments) belongs.

Third grade music class meets twice per week for 40 minutes. The
instructional period will be 18 classes.

Baseline Evidence

A diagnostic assessment of third grade students knowledge of the


instruments of the orchestra was administered in September. Data analysis
indicated that the mean score was 40.8%. See attachments for baseline evidence

2. Student Population

The student population is 20 students in grade 3. Of these 20 students, 4


(20%) take private instrument lessons. 1 student (5%) has an IEP or 504 plan.

3. Learning Content
Standards

Maryland Music Standards:


1.0 1.a. Categorize band and orchestra instruments by sight and sound
according to the string, woodwind, brass, or percussion family

4. Target (Outcome)

Of the 20 students in the targeted population who attend 16 out of 18


classes, 55-85% of these students will improve by the following:
Tier 1, 0-19% will earn 59% or higher
Tier 2, 20-39% will earn 60-70% or higher
Tier 3, 40-59% will earn 70-80% or higher
Tier 4, 60-70% will earn 80-85% or higher
With this target goal, students will be closing the gap by half, which shows a
significant increase in their ability to identify instruments of the orchestra.

Highly Effective

85% of students will reach the target percentage for their tiered group on the
post-assessment (17 students)

90% of the students reached the target percentage for their tiered group on
the post-assessment (18 students)

5. Evidence of Growth

The pre-assessment and post-assessment will include 13 items (worth 20


points) that assess instrument identification and classification (assessment
attached to hard copy).
Progress will be monitored through classroom observation during activities
(see strategies for examples) and by written assessment midway through the
unit.
At midpoint, 11 out of 20 students had met their goal and the mean score
had risen to 65.8%.
By the end, 18 out of 20 students met their goal and the mean score was
80%.

6. Rationale

Most music standards are based on the understanding of the elements of


music. One such element is timbre. Being able to distinguish between the
sounds of different instruments helps students analyze music, appreciate
music, and later, make their own choices in creating music.
Additionally, fourth and fifth grade students are eligible to join band where
knowing about the instruments, their sounds, and how they are grouped can
help them decide what they want to play and better their understanding of
how their instrument relates to the other instruments in the band.

7. Strategies

Strategies include use of multiple representations, including visual, aural and


kinesthetic, to support music comprehension.
Activities will include:
- use of manipulatives
- music analysis
- musical games
