Absenteeism
Introduction
Absenteeism refers to unauthorized absence of the worker from
his job. Absenteeism can be defined as failure of employees to
report for work when they are scheduled to work. Employees who
are away from work on recognized holidays, vocations, approved
leaves of absence allowed for under the collective agreement.
Definition of Absenteeism
Absenteeism is the term generally used to refer to unscheduled
employee absences from the workplace.
Objective:
To find out the various causes of absenteeism and how they effect
their organization and how can control it and to provide
suggestions to reduce the absenteeism.
Typ e s o f Ab s e n t e e i s m
There are two types of absenteeism and these are as under.
Vol u n t a r y Ab s e n t e e i s m :
An employee deliberate or habitual absence from work and
without valid reason.
Involuntary Absenteeism :
Employee can be absent from work for several reasons such as
illness, death in the family, and the personal reasons for absence
are unavoidable and understandable, many employers have sick
leave policies that allow employees a certain number of paid
absent days per year for these.
Causes of Absenteeism
Excessive workload on the employees:
Effect of absenteeism
Labour absenteeism is a harmful to the both employees and
the management.
Normal workflow in the organization is disturbed because
due to absenteeism normal work is disturbed from it.
Disciplinary Approach:
Many employees use a disciplinary. People who are absent the
first time and receive the oral warning, but subsequent absence
bring written warnings, suspensions and dismissal.
Positive Reinforcement:
Positive reinforcement include such method as giving cash,
recognition, time off or other reward for meeting attendance
standards. In which organization give the benefits to the
employees and use the positive step for controlling absenteeism
through courtesy words.
Combination Approach:
Combination approach ideally reward desired behaviours and
punish undesired behaviors. This approach uses policies offenders
and develops various programs and reward for outstanding
attendance.
No Fault Policies:
Here the reasons of absence do not matter but the employees
must manage their time rather than having managers make
decisions about excused and unexcused absence. Once
absenteeism exceeds normal limit, then disciplinary action up to
and including termination of employment can occur.
Attendance Reward:
It is the good step for controlling the absenteeism because if
every employees have good attendance percentage then
organization give reward to those employees and other
employees also influence it who are absent from their job
Provide Incentives
An incentive provides an employee with a boost to their
motivation and avoids unnecessary absenteeism. Incentives like
two hours of bonus pay for every month of perfect attendance
can improve a lot.
Sickness Reporting
Tell employees that they must phone in as early as possible to
advise why they are unable to make it to work and when they
expect to return.
Bradford factor
Can also be used to identify and cure excessive absenteeism.
Conclusion
To conclude, employees dissatisfaction towards jobs and welfare
measure, hedic work schedule stress, health problem are some of
the major causes o absenteeism. This can be reduced by the
management by implementing various employee satisfactory
changes in the organization. People are the major assets of any
organization and taking care of their welfare and satisfaction is
their duty as awhole apart from earning profit
