NARRATIVE REPORT

I, Ramces M. Soliman, a Civil Engineering student of Tarlac State University

had acquired a total of Sixty Four (64) hours of office and field practicum in Du-Jon
Construction and Development Corporation from June 15, 2016 to June 24, 2016. As
I transferred in Dahn Berger Philippines Construction Corporation, I had acquired a
total of Two Hundred Twenty (220) hours of office and field practicum from June 29,
2016 until August 2, 2016. Summing up all the hours, I had completed the required
Two Hundred Eighty (280) hours of practicum.
As we started our journey as trainees at Du-Jon Construction and
Development Corporation, we felt nervous to commit mistakes because we are
newbies at that time. Many things came up in my mind like, what this company
might expect from us and what impression we should give them so that they will not
be disappointed for having us in their company. Mr. Allan Guiao the Project Manager
was our supervisor at that time. He oriented us about the things that their company
might share so that we can gain some knowledge when it comes to actual practice.
The workers and staffs gave us a warm welcome as we became a part of their
company.
I have learned many things in their company especially when it comes in
construction of town houses. From footing, our supervisor taught us they are not
doing the traditional way of excavating the footing one by one, instead they will
excavate the whole area of the project so that they can move freely when they are
working. When it comes to concreting I also learned that using heavy equipment
called Pump Crete is the fastest way in pouring of concrete in slabs and columns,
rather than using a simple mixer. I have noticed that instead of using an angle bar
in making trusses they prefer using purlins that are made from Korea. Lastly, I have
learned that they are not making septic tanks instead the Clark Development
Corporation provided them a line, connecting all the sewage system of all the
houses and establishments in the area.
Even though we have learned a lot of knowledge in Du-Jon Cons. and Devt
Corp. we decided to transfer in other company which is Dahn Berger Philippines
Construction Corporation (DBPCC). DBPCCs specialties are SM Prime Holdings Inc.
projects like BPOs (Business Processing Outsourcing) and Supermalls. As we
started our practicum in DBPCC we felt afraid and nervous when having
conversations with our supervisors. It was a big challenge for us interacting with the
Engineers in this company because at that time we are still in the process of
adjusting in our new environment. Mr. Marzon Ragos, CAD Operator, Head
Documentation Officer and Engr. Anjelo Manalang, Office Engineer, Quantity
Surveyor oriented us about the rules and regulations of the company.
On the first day of our practicum in DBPCC, as usual we felt nervous but still
we are confident that we can accomplish all the works that they will assign to us. As
time goes by, I didnt regret transferring in this company, because we had gained a
lot of experience and knowledge about constructing a BPO owned by SM Prime
Holdings Inc. aside from having the experience of constructing town houses.
The experiences and knowledges that I learned from this company are as
follows. Starting it from the types of scaffoldings that our used in site like H frames,
A frames and Telescopic frames. These types of frames have different lengths and
purposes. In line with frames are the joint pins that are used to connect several

frames vertically. Base jacks serves as the footings of the scaffolding so that it will
be stable. Adjustable or Fixed U heads are used to hold different types of headers
namely Truss, I-beam and Wooden type. These headers have different length, Truss
type is 3.0 meters, I-beam type is 1.2 to 1.5 meters and Wooden type is 3.0 to 3.3
meters in length. I have learned that these materials must be properly constructed
in site to secure safety in construction.
When it comes to concreting, I have learned the used of Tie rod with bolt
threaded cast plate, zocalo ,spacer blocks, shear separators, tubulars and the
function of stiffener columns and lintel beams. Tie Rods are used to secure the
beams when concreting to avoid bursting that may cause misalignment of beams.
On the other hand spacer blocks are used to separate the reinforcement and the
phenolic board so that when pouring of concrete they will attain the concrete cover
required. Shear separators are used to separate top and bottom bars when it comes
to slab. Tubulars having a dimension of (2x 2x 6m)are used to secure the faces of
the beam with the help of phenolic boards (1.2mx2.4m) to acquire the desired
dimension. Stiffener columns and lintel beams with dimensions of 150mm. x 400
mm. are used to secure CHB. Lastly in concreting, zocalo which is 150mmx150mm
in dimension is used as water tightness in every partition.
Polyethylene and Styrofoam are also used in the site. I have also learned the
purpose of these two materials. Polyethylene sheets are put on slab on grade to
avoid the infiltration of water that comes from the concrete when pouring.
Styrofoams are used as separator for beams and CHB, columns and CHB to avoid
the destruction of the CHB when an Earthquake occurs.
I also learned things not just by observing and asking with our supervisors
but I also learned from my experiences in the site, when our supervisors told us to
check for the punch list. Punch list consist of the things that must be removed,
cleaned or to be corrected by the subcontractors. One of the most important things
that I have learned in this company is Estimates. Because of this we acquired a lot
of knowledge on how important estimate is.
One of the greatest feelings in this company DBPCC is that we are always
welcome and they treated us like co-workers or sometimes we felt that we are just
brothers and sisters. We shared our happy, worst and sometimes love stories. We
enjoyed each others company every day. My day will not be complete if I havent
talk to them, because you will miss the feeling of belongingness. We are very lucky
to be part of this great company with great staffs and great workers. Even though
were close enough, the respect is still there. All I can say is that these people are
worth missing for. My experiences with these people are the greatest moments that
I will treasure in my entire life. The belongingness that we didnt feel in Du-Jon is
fulfilled by Dahn Berger Philippines Construction. In this company they filled us joy,
laughter, experiences and specially knowledge that we can apply in the future.
I have two memorable experiences in my whole practicum program. The first
one is from Du-Jon which goes like this. One afternoon me and my co-trainees, took
a nap inside the office before going to site at 1:00 pm, while we are resting the
President of the company came. He shouted on us and said Go out! Go out! we
are all shocked and hurriedly went to site. After it, our chairs in the office were
removed as directed by the President. We are wondering why he did that to us. So
we felt like were not welcome in their company. It is one of the reasons why we
decide to transfer in other company. My second memorable experience is that when
we are already at DBPCC, after visiting the SM Clark admin office. While we are
walking, we are surprised by our supervisors and treated us in a fast-food chain. It

was the first treat of our supervisors so we are very happy on that time. We felt the
happiness with them every day until our practicum ends.
My advice to those who will take their practicum in the near future is that
never choose a company just because it provides allowance, but rather choose a
company that will provides you knowledge and experiences that money cant buy.
OJT is just the start of our chosen career. Be brave, gain a lot of self-confidence,
patience and be dedicated to your work. Respect each other, love each other and
always be thankful for what theyve shared to you. Remember, in the near future we
will all become a LEADER that says Lets Go! not a BOSS that says Go!.
