1. What should the people of Patabog do to improve their ways of living?
The people of Patabog should become responsible citizens and must try to learn and become
knowledgeable in order for them to understand many things. By understanding they will be able
to help one another to alleviate their suffering as a community. All of this are applicable with the
help of the doctor and midwife in the movie. These are some ways: The people should learn
ways to manage their garbage such as using the 3Rs and by segregating their wastes. They can
also ask help to be able to provide their community clean source of water and a good water ways
system so that they wont have to void anywhere and decrease the risk for diseases. They can
also be given training or workshop on alternative livelihood programs. That way they can
increase their income and be able to provide better for their family. The people should always
clean their environment and take good care of their animals. They can make houses for their
animals and always keep them clean to prevent contamination and spread of diseases. Aside from
trainings they can also be given seminars regarding proper hygiene, health status, first aid
techniques, health services that can be provided to them for free, and other promotive and
preventive teachings that can help them. In this way they will become more knowledgeable of
their right as citizens and be able to provide care to themselves and to their families; making
them a more independent individual and a self-sufficient community.
2. What are the factors affecting the health of the people of Patabog?
These are the factors:
Employment, Income and social status- higher income and social status are linked
to better health. The people of Patabog are very poor. Their only source of income
is fishing which is not stable and their working condition is very hazardous.
Education-low education levels are linked with poor health, more stress and lower
self-confidence. Most of the people of Patabog did not go to school. Because of
their lack of proper education they are easily misguided and lack understanding in
what is good and bad for their health.
Physical environment-safe water, clean air, safe houses, communities and roads
all contribute to good health. In Patabog they do not have a clean source of water,
their environment is much polluted. They do not have a good waterway system
and they do not have a proper place to void and secrete their waste. They do not
throw their trashes properly and their road (bridge) is not safe to use which makes
transportation very difficult.

Health services- accessibility and availability of health services that prevent and
treat diseases influences the health of the community. The hospital in their area is
very far. The only health centre in their area has limited facilities and lack
manpower (ex. dentist and nurse).
Politics- the local government especially the officials have great responsibilities to
those people they serve; ensuring that they are well provided, informed and
guided in regards to their health. The officials in Patabog do not pay close
attention to the needs of the people. The mayor always makes promises that are
not met and neglects the people of Patabog.
Personal behavior and coping skills-balanced eating, keeping active, smoking and
drinking, and how we deal with lifes stresses and challenges all affect health. The
people of Patabog do not always eat three times a day and lack proper nutrition
since they do not have the luxury of having variety of foods. The men have bad
habits such as drinking and smoking. Most of the people in Patabog have a
negative outlook in life and loses hope in a better future because of what they are
currently experiencing.
Culture-customs and traditions, and belief of the family and community all affect
health. The people of Patabog believe and follow customs that are harmful to
them and unsanitary. They consult an albularyo and follow beliefs that are
fallacies. All these affect gravely on the communities health.
Social support network- greater support from the people that surround you is
linked to better health. In the movie the parents are busy and do not take very
good care of their children. The families have issues within them that are not
easily resolved. Some families are broken families which cause other problems to
arise.

3. If I am the nurse, These are my nursing measures/management in response to the factors

that affect the health of the community:
In all these measures /management the nurse together with the healthcare team is vital for
the success:
Employment, Income and social status- Money is always an issue for the
community. As nurse in the community I can collaborate with people who can
provide livelihood education to the people to be able to give alternative source of
income and provide employment for them as well. In this way they would be able
to have better working environment (safer and more stable than fishing).
Education- Education is a basic right. I can include this as a need for the officials
in the community to prioritize. In this way everyone would have an equal
opportunity in education; a chance to have a better understanding and awareness
with regards to their health.

Physical environment- the environment is a major contribution to the

communitys health. As a nurse I would set an example in maintaining the
cleanliness and order in the environment. I could also provide health educations
on why they should clean the environment, how they should properly clean the
environment and etc. this way they would better understand that everything that is
taught and reminded to them are vital for their health. In this movement constant
monitoring and keen observations are needed to be able to perform these tasks
well.
Health services- health services at times are not always properly distributed and
delivered. As a nurse I would make sure that each person in the community would
be able to get the attention needed for their complete wellness. I could ask help
from other health care teams to work with us in the community. As well as the
government and non-government agencies in conducting medical missions and
other preventive activities done in a community setting.
Politics- In the movie government officials are very neglectful of their duties. As a
nurse I would personally see to it that the needs of the community are provided
and is processed in due time. If not, I would look for other ways such as seeking
help from other government agencies to address the problem. I could also ask help
from groups and organizations from the private sector to help the community in
terms of its primary needs such as rebuilding of the bridge, clean water way
system, medical supplies etc.
Personal behavior and coping skills- The people of Patabog have bad habits which
is why health teachings with proper guidance and monitoring is needed for them
to be able to eradicate these habits. The common ones are smoking and drinking; I
would provide health teachings regarding what these are, their effects to them and
to the people around them and ways/tips aid them in stopping these habits. I could
also ask speakers to provide dialogues/talks, open forum, recollection etc. as a
form of self-actualization for the people to have a better understanding of
themselves. In this way they would understand the different stages of
development, what they should expect and how they should face these things in
their life. Through self-actualization the people would have better coping skills
and be able to have a good outlook in life.
Culture- I would try to understand and learn more about their practices, beliefs
and traditions. I would dwell on the history of their culture and their standing on
these things. Later on I would provide health education regarding these practices
and effects/implications to their health without disrespecting their cultures in the
community. Together with the healthcare team we can also conduct seminars
regarding promotion of health and prevention of illnesses in the community such
as proper hygiene, disposal of waste (3Rs and recycling), cleanliness of the
environment, proper sanitation etc.

Social support network- As a nurse I could engage with them in a

dialogue, open forum, recollection, outing together as a community to
promote strong and binding relationships within the community. Having a
strong, united and loving support network helps reduces the weight of
problems/trials/stress a person can experience. Through this the people
will have a stronger bond within themselves; doing so helps boost their
confidence, trust and understanding with each other which in a way could
reduce incidence of quarrels.
