I can recall one of my first football practices, I was in elementary school, my head was pounding
because of my tight helmet, and I was not happy. I heard the words of the coach, If you want
to be a running back or quarterback go stand by that tree. Obviously, the whole team flocked
to the tree. But my friend Logan Ball and I stayed. Why? Because we knew that we were too big
for that position. We knew we were linemen, and we embraced it. Of course everyone wanted
to be the superstar, but not us.
The question may often times pop up in our minds, What is it that I can do to help the
church? As Christians, we often times do not realize how many things need to be done in
order for the kingdom to grow. Think of it like a sports team, not everyone on that team has
the same role. Each person has a specific role that is crucial for success.
Thinking of the church as a sports team, we see everyone has an important responsibility that
they must fulfill in order for growth and success of the church. Dont get caught up living in the
moment. Dont sit back and watch others do the work, dont get overwhelmed with what is
going on and become hesitant to lend a helping hand. Think back to my team, if everyone was
a quarterback or running back, who would do the blocking?
Sitting back and waiting for someone else to take control is irresponsible. Some of us may be
better at things than others, for example, public speaking. Not all of us can be a preacher, but
there is a job we can all do to better the work of the church. Take into account 1 Corinthians
12:12-31, we need one another in order for the church to grow and function properly. Instead
of not doing anything, or wanting to be someone else, we ought to embrace our roles to help
the work of the church continue.
