HOUSEHOLD INCOMES

TO BE YOUNG AND RICH

The national median household income is $53,657, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and the average is $72,641. The Washington MSA had the highest percentage of ZIP
codes with a median household income over the national median, and tied with Boston for the most with an average household income over the national average.

It turns out our millionaires are on the

younger side, meaning our group includes
fewer retired folks than, say, Miami.

Plenty of bling is on our millionaires driveways in the Washington region. We rank second only to Los Angeles among top metro areas for number of cars in a single
household, further upping our net worth.

Not everything is multiplied for us despite having the highest concentration

of millionaire neighborhoods among our peers. The cost to buy a house in a
millionaire area here is in the middle of the pack for the largest regions around
the U.S. somewhere between the bountiful and cheap real estate in Texas and
notoriously expensive West Coast.

Washingtons millionaire ZIP codes

We have one of the most highly educated populations, thanks to an abundance

of professional and high-level government jobs in the region. And that might be
related to wealth as well. Here are the 10 most-educated ZIP codes among the
Washington regions wealthiest, as measured by average net worth.

how we compare

To understand just how big a deal it is to have more than half of adults with
graduate degrees in any area, Boston is the only MSA that out-intellectualizes
us, with nine ZIP codes having more than 50 percent of adults with graduate
degrees among those 50 (it is in Ivy League country, after all). Atlanta, Dallas,
Houston, Los Angeles or Miami had no ZIP codes based on that criteria.
