Math 7 Syllabus 2016-2017
RECOMMENDED MATERIALS:

A scientific calculator is essential for this course.

Spiral Notebook (Have a few extras on hand because one will not last you all year!)
Folder with pockets
Pencils with erasers

TEXTBOOK: Holt McDougal, Grade 7

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Math 7 provides students with opportunities to read, write, and understand the unique language of mathematics
to prepare them for a variety of problem-solving and assessment situations and to make connections
between what they learn in class and the world around them.

ONLINE RESOURCES:
Our textbook includes a great deal of online support. There are study guides and self-tests, as well as an online
version of the entire textbook on the website. Students and parents can access the information at the following
website: my.hrw.com
Username: mathrocks52
Password: wops1

TEACHING FORMAT:
Please come to class on time. Class will begin promptly with a warm-up activity. Once the warm up has been
completed, homework will be reviewed and discussed. The new lesson(s) will be covered through a variety of
learning strategies-possibly including reading, small and large group discussion, cooperative learning, investigative
activities, lecture, etc. Time will typically be given for practice and homework will be given on most days.

GRADING PROCEDURE:
Tests (70%)
There will be one test at the end of each unit. Some units may be broken into smaller unit tests. If you are absent on
the day of the test, be prepared to take it on the day you return.
Retest Policy: Students are given one opportunity to retake each unit test. Students must demonstrate
understanding of the missed objectives by completing Correctives beforehand.

Quizzes (20%)
There will usually be at least one quiz per unit. If you are absent on the day of the quiz, be prepared to take it on the
day you return.

Homework (10%)
Your homework should be completed in a spiral notebook and brought to class every day. Homework will be checked
daily and recorded based on completion. All work must be shown and all problems attempted in order to receive full
credit. Late assignments will receive credit. All missing and incomplete assignments must be completed by test
day or zeros will be assigned.

CHEATING:
Cheating of any sort (copying answers, providing answers, misuse of calculators, etc.) will result in a 0% on the
assessment or assignment.

GRADE REPORTS:
At the end of most units, students will be given a grade report with their overall grade for that unit including the
following percents: tests, quizzes, and homework. Additionally, grades may be checked on Parent Portal at any time.
Upon my return, my classroom website will also outline lesson coverage, assignments, and after school/lunch
availability.

EXPECTATIONS:
Respect: Treat other students, the teacher, and the classroom with respect.
Responsibility: Be on time to class. Come to class prepared with your own textbook, calculator, pencil, folder,
and spiral notebook containing completed homework.
Quality Effort: Participate in class discussions/activities. Use your time productively.

How can I help my child succeed in math this year?

Know what your child is doing in class each week.

Upon my return, visit my classroom website regularly to stay informed. Assignments, quiz/test
announcements, after school/lunch help availability, and online tools are just a few of the resources that
are/will be available.
o http://lundsmathclass.weebly.com
Check your childs planner for assignments on a daily basis.
View your childs progress on Parent Portal.

Help your child with their homework.

Encourage your child to manage their time; not all math homework needs to be done in one sitting.
Provide a quiet place at home with necessary materials.
If your child has trouble with the homework, encourage them to work toward the answer themselves instead
of telling them the answer. Ask them:
Do you understand what the question is asking?
Do you have a similar problem in your notes or book?
Have you seen a problem like this before?
Does your answer seem reasonable?
If your child still has trouble with homework, encourage them to ask questions in class or stay after school for
extra help.
If your child forgets his/her textbook at school, they may access an online version. See above.

Help your child prepare for tests.

Have them organize and review their materials (i.e. notes/warm-ups/vocabulary, homework, and quizzes),
complete more practice problems from the book, take quizzes online @ my.hrw.com, and write down
questions to ask the teacher.
