Video Series Highlights Family Shops Growing Legacy

From large trucks to lawn tractors, the father-son team of
Joe and Augustine (Augie) Altamore, owners of Altamores
Automotive Services in Belvidere, Ill., can put it back into
service. And if customers leave feeling like theyre part of an
extended family, well, thats the idea.
Joe Altamores parents, who emigrated from Sicily in 1968,
purchased a restaurant and made sure everyone who dined
there felt special. Joe and Augie are continuing that legacy.
My grandfather would always talk to the customers, and we
do that here with our customers, says Augie Altamore. We
want people to trust us and they should, because we do honest
work.
The Altamores are the fourth auto service professionals
featured in The Part That Built Me, a video series developed
by ACDelco to honor technicians and encourage young people
to pursue careers as automotive technicians. (Watch at
www.youtube.com/acdelco)
Located about an hour northwest of Chicago, Altamores
Automotive Service is a full-service repair facility that handles
all makes and models and includes transmission and smallengine repair.
Its very special to me that my son is in the same business,
says Joe Altamore. Theres a huge difference in a corporate
garage and a family-owned business. We really care about our

customers and their cars because its our name on the sign. Its
our life. Its our reputation.
Three generations of Altamores have worked on cars and it
looks as though another generation is being groomed for the
garage.
As I grew up working on cars with my father as a young kid, we
would go to the local parts store. It always had to be ACDelco.
We were buying cars and restoring them. And I started doing
that with my son. And now Im starting to do what with my
grandson, Joe Altamore says.
I still love to work, but someday, when I cant do it anymore, I
would love to hand it over to Augie and maybe someday have
my grandson take over. And it goes on from there a familyowned business.

ACDelco Air Shock/Strut Replacement Tips

When servicing the air shocks/struts on 1995-2003 Oldsmobile Aurora; 1997-2005 Buick Park Avenue; and 2000-2005 Buick
LeSabre and Pontiac Bonneville models equipped with the automatic leveling system, there are several steps to take for correct
installation and a proper repair. The leveling system will add air pressure to the shocks to raise the vehicle up to a level ride height
under all types of load conditions. The system has a no load operating pressure of only 10-12 psi.
Verify Compressor Operation
Before replacing the air shocks/struts (P/N 504-165), verify
that the air compressor on the vehicle is cycling. The air
compressor must pressurize and maintain pressure in the load
leveling system.
Turn on the ignition and listen for the compressor to cycle. It
should cycle on approximately 30-45 seconds after the ignition
is turned on and then run for approximately 5-10 seconds to
pressurize the system. The compressor will only cycle at each
ignition cycle or until sufficient weight is added to the vehicle to
lower it against the level position sensor.
Use soapy water
to inspect any
suspected leaks
in the shock
absorber air
sleeves, air tubes,
air lines and
connections of the
leveling system.
Check the air lines and fittings for leaks.
Be sure to check
for damaged lines
due to abrasion with the body or impact damage from road
debris. Repair as necessary.
Cycle the Shock/Strut
Before installing new shocks/
struts, cycle the shock to
spread the lubricant inside the
diaphragm. To cycle a shock,
inflate the air diaphragm
through the air fitting until
the shock fully extends, and
then fully collapse the shock
by pushing the upper mount
all the way down. Repeat this
procedure at least three times.

Inflate the air diaphragm

through the air fitting to
spread the lubricant.

Be sure to follow the appropriate

service information for the
vehicle being repaired when installing the shocks/struts.

Test the System

After installation, testing the system is critical to ensuring
damper endurance and proper operation. The system must
maintain minimum operating pressure. Before test driving the
vehicle, perform the following procedure to check the system
for proper function:
Start the engine and let it run for 1.5-3 minutes.
The air compressor should cycle on and off within 3
minutes.
If the compressor cycles on and off, add approximately 200
lbs. in the cargo compartment of the vehicle. It is necessary
to compress the vehicle suspension approximately one
inch to activate the compressor and level the vehicle. The
air compressor should cycle on to level the vehicle within
1.53 minutes.
If the vehicle levels properly, proceed to test drive the
vehicle.
Replace the Air
Compressor Dryer
Spring to Enhance
Performance
On GM vehicles
equipped with a
leveling system, the
systems no load
operating pressure
can be increased
by replacing the
spring in the air
compressor dryer. A
Replace the dryer spring.
replacement spring is
supplied in kit P/N PK097 (88985665). The kit has everything
needed to install replacement shocks, including air lines, fittings
and the replacement spring.
The new spring will increase the minimum operating pressure
of the leveling system to 25 psi. This is required for enhanced
operation of the replacement shocks/struts.

Automatic Parking Assist Hits The Spot

The Automatic Parking Assist system available on 2014-2015

Chevrolet SS, Cadillac CTS Sedan and Cadillac XTS searches
for and steers the vehicle into parallel and perpendicular
parking spots, making parking easy for drivers. Ultrasonic
sensors detect the width and depth of either parallel or
perpendicular (reverse right-angle) parking spaces. The system
provides hands-free steering, but the driver must still shift
gears and control the brakes and accelerator.
Parking the Vehicle

cluster. The
system will begin
searching for a large enough parking space. Drivers should note
that the system cannot detect whether a found parking space is
a legal space.
If equipped with perpendicular parking mode, pressing and
holding the Automatic Parking Assist button during the search
process switches between parallel and perpendicular parking.
The vehicle always backs into a perpendicular parking space.

The system defaults to searching for parking spaces to the right

of the vehicle, but it can also search for parking spaces to the
left by turning on the left turn signal.
After completely passing a large enough space bordered by
two vehicles or other objects, the system provides instructions
on the DIC to shift to Reverse to engage automatic steering.
At this point, the driver lets go of the steering wheel and
accelerates or brakes as required. Once the vehicle has been
directed into the parking spot, a Parking Complete message is
displayed and a beep sounds.
If the vehicle does not steer into the expected space, the
system may be maneuvering the vehicle into a previously
detected space. In addition, if the steering wheel is used by
the driver or the vehicle exceeds 6mph (10km/h), Automatic
Parking Assist is disengaged.
System Components
The parking assist system components include:
Front and Rear Parking Assist Control Module
Front object sensors
Rear object sensors
Side object sensors
Parking Assist switch
Parking Assist switch indicator
Automatic Parking Assist switch
The Front and Rear Parking Assist Control Module uses the
side object sensors located near the wheel openings, along
with the front and rear park assist sensors, to guide the vehicle
into a parking space. The Front and Rear Parking Assist Control
Module provides a 12V reference and a low reference to the
object sensors. The individual signals from each of the sensors
are used to determine the location and distance of an object.

On models equipped with Spark

Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) 4- or
6-cylinder engines experiencing
a hard start or extended crank
condition, or black smoke from
the exhaust when starting, there
are several basics tests to perform
during diagnosis.
First, verify fuel quality. Next,
perform a compression test. On V6
engines, there should be 150185
psi average compression. No cylinder
should be less than 140 psi. On
4-cylinder engines, there should be
170200 psi average compression.
No cylinder should read less than
100 psi. Also install a vacuum gauge
prior to a cold start and watch the
needle for signs of a sticking valve.
In addition, perform a fuel system
check. The following tests should be
done after an overnight cold soak.
Set up the vehicle with the CH48027 Digital Pressure Gauge or
equivalent and J-37287 Fuel Line
with Shut-Off Valve or equivalent.
Run the engine to purge all air from
the fuel system and then shut off the
engine and let it sit overnight. Unplug
the injector harness connector.
The next morning, turn the key on
but do not start the engine. Use the
CH-48027 Digital Pressure Gauge or
equivalent to verify prime pulse fuel
pressure is between 5560 psi.

sensor reading, which should always

be close to what the Digital Fuel
Pressure Gauge reads for low side
pressure during this test. This will
also confirm if there is an off-set with
the fuel rail pressure sensor.
Next, crank the engine to see if
it fires. With the injector harness
connectors unplugged, the injectors
are electrically disabled so no fuel
should be delivered to the engine.
If the engine fires, one or more
injectors have been leaking and have
introduced fuel into one or more
cylinders.
Reconnect the injector harness
connectors, start the engine, let it
run for 10 minutes, and then shut
down the engine. Close the shut-off
valve in the J-37287 Fuel Line or
equivalent, which will now separate
the engine side of the fuel system
from the rear section of the returnless fuel system.
Using the Digital Pressure Gauge,
look for a drop in the high side of
the fuel system by monitoring low
side pressure. With the J-37287 or
equivalent valve closed, the system
should hold at least 60 psi for a few
hours. If there is a rapid decrease
in fuel pressure, this would indicate
a leaking high pressure fuel pump
or leaking injectors since the fuel
pressure cannot bleed off to the tank
as the fuel line shut-off valve
is closed.

New Direct Injection Training Course

Takes Pressure Off Fuel System Diagnosis
The piezo fuel injector found in a spray-guided direct fuel
injection system typically uses a voltage of around 140 volts
to expand the piezo stack, which actuates the injectors pintle
valve and allows the fuel to precisely and evenly flow from
the injector. When a piezo injector is replaced, an injector
adjustment procedure must be performed that allows the
control module to learn the spray characteristics of the new
injector.
The new ACDelco Direct
Injection course (S-EP0810.01ILT) covers the
operation and service
of fuel injectors, high
pressure fuel pumps and
the other components of
direct injection systems
for gasoline and diesel
engines.

Gasoline direct injection high pressure side components,

operation and diagnosis
Diesel direct injection high pressure side components,
operation and diagnosis
Diesel direct injection fuel return system components,
operation and diagnosis.

Information is presented in the course through a variety of

case studies that demonstrate proper direct fuel injection
diagnosis of several components. The case study format
provides participants with real-world vehicle conditions that
are consistent with repairs that would be found in the service
bay. They include a descriptive event with the information
needed to find the root cause and determine the most effective
correction.

Direct injection system

Direct injection fuel systems recently have been adopted by all

manufacturers. By injecting fuel directly into the combustion
chamber at a high pressure instead of injecting into the intake
manifold, direct injection can decrease emissions (better
atomization of the fuel), use less fuel (to produce equivalent
horsepower) and provide better performance (reducing preignition and detonation). These benefits mean more vehicles
with direct injection will be on the road.
The training course presents an in-depth look at each aspect of
the direct injection system. Gasoline direct injection systems
are divided into the supply side and the high pressure side while
new diesel direct
injection systems
are divided into a
supply side, a high
pressure side, and
a return side.
High-pressure fuel lines
Direct Injection information for both gasoline and diesel
engines includes a review of system components, system
operation, diagnosis and repairs. Topics include:
Direct injection overview
Gasoline direct injection supply side components,
operation and diagnosis
Diesel direct injection supply side components, operation
and diagnosis

Fuel return lines

One example on a 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine
illustrates how a fuel concern in one section of the system
can affect the operation of the entire system and shows
the importance of performing all the steps in a diagnostic
procedure. The vehicle in the case study ran rough and lacked
power and there was low fuel pressure in all operating ranges.
First, the high pressure fuel pump was replaced, but the lack of
power was still present. The diagnostic information advises to
check for a restriction in the supply lines or a restricted filter.
Replacing the fuel filter repaired the performance conditions.
In the course, all of the related documents for the case studies
are provided to give participants a better understanding of
the diagnosis as well as specific information that may apply to
certain components, systems or manufacturers.

Chevrolet Introduces All-New 2016 Camaro

The sixth-generation, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro offers higher

levels of performance, technology and refinement and is
designed to maintain the sporty car segment leadership earned
over the past five years.
Its faster, more nimble driving experience is enabled by an
all-new, lighter architecture and a broader powertrain range.
In fact, vehicle mass has been reduced by 200 pounds or more,
depending on the model. Six all-new powertrain combinations
are offered, including a 2.0L Turbo, an all-new 3.6L V-6 and the
LT1 6.2L V-8, which is SAE-certified at 455 horsepower (339
kW) and 455 lb-ft of torque (617 Nm) for the most powerful
Camaro SS ever. Each engine is available with six-speed manual
transmissions or new eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Camaros leaner, stiffer platform and slightly smaller

dimensions are accentuated by a dramatic, sculpted exterior.
Meticulously tuned in the wind tunnel, the exterior contributes
to performance through reduced aerodynamic lift for better
handling while enhancing efficiency. Inside, a driver-focused
interior integrates class-leading control technologies, including
a new Driver Mode Selector, configurable instrument cluster
and a customizable ambient lighting feature.
Only two parts carry over from the fifth-generation Camaro
to the new Gen Six: the rear bowtie emblem and the SS badge.
The 2016 Camaro goes on sale later this year with an all-new
convertible model, too.

The Very First Camaro

During the introduction of the 2016 Camaro, Chevrolet
displayed a number of historic models, including the very first
Camaro to roll off the assembly line. Carrying VIN #100001,
this 1967 Camaro is documented as the first of 49 hand-built
pilot assembly vehicles built at the Norwood, Ohio, plant in
mid-1966 early models built for evaluation before regular
production commenced. It was fitted with a 3.7L inline-six
engine and a three-speed manual transmission. It was the car
Chevrolet used for the public introduction of the Camaro in
August 1966, shortly before the car went on sale. It was also
used in a number of public relations photos and promotional
films. It eventually went to an Oklahoma Chevrolet dealer
and passed through several owners before being turned into
a drag racer in the 1980s. It was purchased by Cory Lawson
around 2009 and he oversaw its restoration to productionline condition, with documentation assistance from the GM
Heritage Collection.
