PGPEX - IIM Calcutta's one year full-time residential general management
program for executives gives mid-career professionals the ideal platform to
augment their existing skill sets as they endeavor to armor themselves for
senior and top management roles in the industry. The program, since its
inception in 2007, has spawned alumni who have demonstrated excellence
in the leadership positions that they have occupied in their organisation. The
PGPEX Class of 2016 comprises an eclectic mix of youth and experience. The
batch of 54 brings together nearly 9 years of average work experience
spanning 14 nations across 5 continents. Under the able guidance of the
country's leading management faculty, a passion for continuous learning
synergizes with experiences from diverse backgrounds to create an enriching
learning environment.

We started the Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPEX) in 2007 and today the
program is in its ninth year. Faculty members and other stakeholders of the Institute
envisaged the need of starting a specialized full time programme, designed to select
and incubate people with exceptional intellectual and leadership potential to meet
today's globally challenging business environment where they can remain competitive
by thinking strategically and tactically. We have recently restructured the PGPEX
curriculum, which was made operational from the Academic Session 2015-2016.
Individual research projects, introduction of pre work and workshop modes of teaching,
live projects within a course have been encouraged in the revised curriculum. Last
year, the PGPEX students with their rich and diverse domain experience launched the
first editionof the PGPEX online newsletter, "PGPEX Business Review".
The school has taken the initiative to earn accreditation from top global agencies. The
Institute has recently received the AACSB accreditation, one of the most coveted among
B-schools, which has been earned by less than five percent of the world's business
programmes. It takes a great deal of self-evaluation and determination to earn AACSB
Accreditation and an international accreditation gives us recognition that we are doing
fundamentally well. In addition to AACSB, IIM Calcutta has also received accreditation
from AMBA in March 2014. Through accreditation, IIM Calcutta has not only met
specific standards of excellence, but also made a commitment to ongoing improvement
to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver high quality education to its students.

PGPEX is the one year, full-time, residential, post-graduate program in management
of IIM Calcutta. It has been designed for executives with substantial work experience
and leadership potential. The program, currently in its ninth year, has created top

The extremely competitive selection process followed in the program ensures that only
the very best in terms of aptitude, initiative and experience qualify. A look at the batch
profile for the present class will show that they have about 9 years of average work
experience with significant international exposure. This is a diverse batch with work
experience in Information Technology, Consulting, Telecom, Manufacturing, Power and
Financial Services.
The PGPEX course is structured to harness and synergize management understanding
and techniques through courses offered by our in-house and international visiting
faculty. This is further augmented with consistent engagement with industry leaders
and CEOs who share with the participants their rich insights and practical underpinnings.
PGPEX students also go through an international immersion program to improve their
understanding of global business. On completion of the course, the students are able
to implement new ideas, play leadership roles and contribute significantly to the growth
and development of their organizations. The rigors of the PGPEX curriculum have met
the stringent accreditation norms set by AACSB. IIM Calcutta has also been placed
among the top 16 global business schools according to the ranking done by the
Financial Times.
The experience and domain knowledge of the students, backed by the management

IIM CALCUTTA
The first IIM to be established by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P Sloan School
of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and the Indian industry, IIM Calcutta has
evolved into a world-renowned institute with a distinctive culture.
Set in a 135 acre picturesque campus on the outskirts of Calcutta, IIM Calcutta has always attracted the best of students,
faculty and industry partners. Over the years, the institute has evolved into a melting pot of academia, industry & research.
The campus is fully residential with state-of-the-art classrooms, seminar and conference rooms and a 750-seat auditorium.
The B. C. Roy Memorial Library is one of the largest in Asia and is recognized by the World Bank as a regional repository
of knowledge.
The campus is almost entirely Wi-Fi enabled. Internet connectivity is available to students in their own living areas and in
the classrooms and IIM Calcutta's own computing infrastructure has a wide library of software suitable for Computer
Applications in Management. Students have access to proprietary databases, BSE/NSE trading platforms and market data
from around the world.

Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV)


IIM Calcutta has a vision to emerge as an international centre of management education with its foundation on Indian
ethos and values. Management Centre for Human Values is a significant milestone in achieving this vision and holds up
to humankind contemporary adaptations from the perennial and vibrant corpus of Indian philosophical wisdom. The centre
offers courses in Business Ethics, Value-based Leadership, NGO Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and also
conducts short duration Management Development Programmes and In-Company Programmes, and Workshop on these
themes besides publishing an international bi-annual journal viz the Journal of Human Values through the Sage Publications.

Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) Innovation Park (IIP)


The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at IIM
Calcutta is an initiative to achieve greater understanding
and analysis of these areas and to stimulate their development
for societal benefit. CEI's vision is to grow as a program of
international renown, where students, faculty, alumni, industry
and policy makers collaborate, learn and innovate. CEI is
involved in entrepreneurial research and case development
in collaboration with industry, to support creation of new
ventures and experience sharing with established
entrepreneurs, to enable budding entrepreneurs to make a
smooth transition from idea to implementation.

IIM Calcutta's efforts towards promoting Entrepreneurship


and creating an eco-system to nurture start-ups has got a
fillip recently as it has incorporated on 22 August 2014 a
not-for-profit company, called IIM Calcutta Innovation Park
(IIP) as a section 8 company under the Companies Act 2013.
The main objective of this newly formed company is to
promote start-ups in five broad areas - healthcare, education,
clean technology, lifestyle and analytics. The newly formed
company has planned to raise seed fund to the tune of Rs.
10 - 20 crore from our alumni to provide initial seed money
to the start-ups incubated at IIM Calcutta.

Financial Research and Trading Lab


The Financial Research and Trading Lab (the Finance Lab) at IIM Calcutta was set up in November 2008 to undertake
cutting edge research on financial markets using real time high frequency data from financial markets of India and around
the world. The Finance Lab uses a simulator to simulate trading in financial markets using actual prices.In 2011, there
was a grant from the Union Finance Ministry of Rs. 20 crore. The Lab has since augmented its physical infrastructure and
procured international databases & softwares. The Lab has over a dozen Bloomberg terminals and over 78 terminals.
The terminals are loaded with a trading simulator and contain data from six markets NSE- Cash and F&O BSE-Cash,
NCDEX, MCX and Currency futures.

International Immersion Program @ Germany


The contemporary business management practices make it
imperative upon the budding industry leaders to evolve a
global outlook and greater understanding of work environment
in diverse cultural settings. In line with this requirement, PGPEX
curriculum provisions for an international immersion program
through a partner B-School in organizing country.

SAP headquarters & BASF and to hidden champions of


German SME industry such as Hager and Krcher. It helped
in getting an insight into German business practices,
organizational work culture, level of technological adoption
in German organizations, and innovative approaches these
organizations employ to resolve complex challenges. Thus,
students could develop an understanding of the factors that
helped these organizations in maintaining a competitive
advantage through longstanding strategic positioning and
operational efficiencies.

Twenty eight students of the current batch went through this


program for two weeks to Mannheim Business School
Germany. Immersion program was based on the theme
"Doing Business in Germany". The program was designed
to develop an understanding about economic, cultural, and
geo-political drivers behind countries integral to European
economy. Students attended class room sessions by highly
qualified faculty with the focus on European economic
integration, international business management with German
perspective, and marketing and operational strategies of
European businesses.

The interaction with German business leaders and networking


event with students further provided an opportunity for peer
learning and building a strong relationship with these
professionals. Through such activities students could
understand some finer socio-cultural aspects of "Doing
Business in Germany".
The immersion program, thus, helped students in
transforming their business perspective about working in
a global environment and would go a long way in helping
them emerge as successful leaders in industry.

The class room learning was further reinforced by experiential


learning through on-site visits to German Central Bank,
global giants such as Mercedes,

I taught this group from IIM-Calcutta about the European economic integration during
their visit to Manheim business school. The group was extremely interested and had very
good basic knowledge of international economics. They were very much interested to know
how we try to solve our current problems in the Euro area. In the discussion they gave
extremely interesting comments which is quite unusual in classes like these. I enjoyed the
class very very much.

International Immersion Program @ US


Immersion program has become an important part of
curriculum for PGPEX students. It gives an opportunity for
students to get exposed to pedagogy of other prominent Bschool abroad. In addition, there are industry visits which
help to widen the perspectives and build on the established
foundation.
This year, 26 of the PGPEX students went to Foster School
of Business, University of Washington at Seattle. The Program
was based on the theme of "Global Leadership and Strategy".
True to its theme was its content. Classroom sessions covered
important aspects of strategy, leadership, marketing, analytics,
innovation and decision making. Professors provided relevant
industrial experiences to augment the learning. Emphasis
was made to showcase how companies are getting impacted
by the challenge of globalization and what these companies
are doing in turn. Classroom sessions covered how innovation,
values and cultural aspects were creating a competitive
advantage for present day companies.Importance of
leadership traits that stood the test of time and are much

needed in today's dynamic environment were stressed upon.


Visits to Fortune 500 companies - Boeing, PACCAR, Starbucks
and COSTCO Wholesale - provided a golden opportunity
to see how these companies are marching from strength
to strength each day. These companies have achieved
operational efficiency in different areas while not diluting
customer centric approach. To know about technology
disruptions and how these companies have embraced the
new technologies or how they are gearing up for changes
ahead was admirable. Executives of these companies
reiterated the importance of values and organizational
culture in creating a formidable position. They made the
students aware of what it entails to be a global company.
Immersion program takes the students a step ahead to look
at forthcoming challenges with different perspectives and
in turn overcome such challenges innovatively and optimally.

One challenging year at the beautiful IIM Calcutta campus was an enriching
experience in varied dimensions. Living and breathing Management studies, amongst
some very bright minds and under the tutelage of exceptionally competent Professors,
prepared me well for the Corporate life after having spent nearly 20 years in Indian
Army. My soft landing process was greatly aided by the camaraderie instilled during
hours of burning the midnight oil together in groups. My present assignment, in
Corporate Planning, needs a blend of nearly every subject studied at the campus
with the past experience gained.

With substantial work experience prior to joining the
PGPEX program, I had my moments of doubt whether
taking a break at that juncture of my career was the right
thing to do. Also, ours would be the pioneer batch and
there was no legacy behind us.

I had 11+ years of experience in Business development,


Client management and Growth strategy before joining
IIMC PGPEX program. Program gave excellent exposure
to finance, strategy, marketing, operations etc. In a way,
I acquired skills and knowledge for running any business
function of an organization.

However once I landed in the IIMC campus, all my doubts


were dispelled. PGPEX program completely changed my
perspective of looking at business, economy and
philosophically at life in general. The program was
extremely rigorous, but the fun and excitement of learning
was worth all the effort we put in. Thanks to the eminent
professors, their pedagogy style and a highly experienced
and diverse peer group, the one year experience at IIMC
became a memorable one for me.

The key differentiator of PGPEX is the diversity of student


experience which makes class discussions very enriching
and enjoyable. It's a very well managed program with a
very collaborative learning environment.
Apart from academics, I had good time playing tennis
and participating in IIMC music club & social sector focus
events. With my wife and 2 kids in campus, it was bestof-both-world for me. We truly made lifetime friends and
will cherish the memories for years to come.

Post PGPEX, I joined TCS in the domain of Business


Analytics. I have been engaged in defining business
analytics vision and strategy for many Fortune 500
companies across the globe. The learnings from PGPEX
program came in very handy in all these engagements.

PGPEX has created tremendous positive impact and has


opened a world of opportunity for me. I highly recommend
PGPEX program - It a remarkable experience!

Looking back, the decision to invest in myself through


PGPEX was one of the best decisions I have taken in my

of IIM Calcutta. This year's annual sports event had PGPEX representation in various categories and many current batch
students proved their mettle by winning multiple accolades too. Regular fitness freaks and joggers from PGPEX find haven
in "Armageddon Club "which is dedicated to adventure freaks, trekkers and joggers. Few students stay with their families
on campus in the family hostel. The spouses are welcome in the social events at campus and the kids find ample space
and natural playgrounds to nurture their young minds at the green campus.

"Passion Drives Excellence"


The theme of Lattice 2015 - "Passion Drives Excellence"
is about the power of passion, be it in any walk of
life, an undisputed driver of excellence. In this dynamic
age of innovation, disruption and, immense
competition, there is nothing as important as passion.
The event is scheduled for 10th of October' 2015.The
idea is to invite people who have become successful
by pursuing their dreams and to gain insights from
their invaluable experiences. This year, the thrust is
also on making Lattice a rendezvous event for the
entire PGPEX alumni base which will serve as a
platform for the current batch to interact and learn
from the real life success stories first hand.

"Synergy of Youth and Experience: India's Future"


The theme of Lattice 2014 - "Synergy of Youth and
Experience: India's Future" explored emerging cross
generational issues and discovered possible synergies
amongst these seemingly polar groups to benefit
organizations. Through the various guest speakers
and panel discussions by the likes of Mr. Pankaj
Pachauri, Dr. Chandan Mitra representing the
government and commerce industry , and other events
chaired and hosted by seniors from companies like
Ebay, Reebok and Aditya Birla Power to name a few,
the event focussed on how today's populace can
work together with the seasoned employees with years
of experience to realize our country's growth potential.

2012

Lattice 2013, with the theme, "India - The Time


Ahead" was conducted over two days in October
2013 with many different speaker sessions and
panel discussions. We had the privilege to hear
from media luminaries like Mr. Shekhar Gupta,
Mr. Prashant Pandey about the state of media
industry in India, personal experiences of
entrepreneurs like Mr. E SarathBabu (Foodking),
Mr. Ashish Chaturvedi (uFony) and speakers
from various sections of the society discussing
on the human cost of industrialization. These
dialogues touched upon various economic,
business and social aspects of future India and
were enriched by the opinions of our respected
speakers.

Lattice 2012, with the theme "Winds of Change",


aimed to usher in a wave of new ideas
amongparticipants who will go on to make a
meaningful difference in the corporate world
and the society as future change agents. The
event turned out to be a diverse mix of ideas
from contributions from the eminent speakers
such as Mr. M. Goutham Reddy, Executive
Director, Ramky Group; Mr. Vijay Mahajan,
Founder and Chairman of BASIX; and Mr. Aritra
Sarkar, VP, Strategy of ABP Group.

Information sessions and real-time interviews can be conducted using our
videoconferencing facilities, if a recruiter is unable to visit the campus. Please
contact either the placement executives or student placement co-ordinators
for assistance regarding scheduling and arranging for interviews/information
sessions.

Placement process and policies


At IIM Calcutta, we want recruiting our students to be easy and flexible. We also
want to optimize your success and deliver highest yield possible based on your
offers and marketing efforts. With this in mind, we have outlined a set of
guidelines practised by organizations that tend to have the highest acceptance
rate.
Unless explicit permission has been provided by the Placement Committee,
participants are restricted from approaching companies directly for individual
placements. Companies are requested to interact either through student
placement co-ordinators or executives of the Placement Committee.

CAMPUS VISIT POLICY


Companies may visit the Institute before the scheduled placement days to conduct industry talks and discussions.
Following guidelines shall be applicable in this context :
Any on-campus activity which is not a part of regular academic curriculum is defined as company-participant
interaction. Companies can conduct a maximum of two interactions for PGPEX (slot for interaction will be assigned
on a first come first serve basis)
All campus activities must be scheduled in conjunction with the PGPEX placement committee.
The fixed joining fee per student is charged for the services offered to the company throughout the course of
recruitment from the campus.
All placement charges should be settled within one month of students joining the organization. The institute however
does not guarantee that the student will join the company or will remain in the job for a specified duration of time.
Service taxes, if applicable, will be charged in addition to the fees.

COMMUNICATION
Recruiters are required to communicate the offer details to the PGPEX Placement Committee in order to enable
the Committee to streamline the placement process for both recruiter and participant.
We advise our students to consider each opportunity as a long-term commitment and to accept offers where they
can make contributions over time. The placement committee understands your need to finalize business planning
and encourage students to make their decisions as quickly as possible. We encourage you to stay in close contact
with the PGPEX Placement Committee throughout the recruiting season and offer process so that we can ensure
students are adhering to our guidelines and assisting you with any helpful information.
Employers are expected to honour any offers they extend. If an offer must be rescinded, employers should contact
the account manager immediately to work out a positive communication strategy.

GRADE NON - DISCLOSURE


PGPEX students have substantial work experience and have been admitted through a rigorous evaluation of
each applicant's educational background, intellectual capabilities, professional experience and global outlook.
Successful completion of this programme at IIM Calcutta signifies each participant's academic success, management
potential and cultural awareness. The school treats its students' grades as confidential information and therefore
has adopted a policy of grade non-disclosure.
The Placement Committee reserves the right to amend the rules/guideline stated above and will inform the
companies of any changes accordingly.
