Abstract

During the last decade, the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity among
teenagers has been a key goal for the whole international community. In spite of tremendous
improvements that has been made, unsafe abortion continuous to be a hindrance causing
more teenagers to die from complications However, the purpose of the study is to examine
the ways by which unsafe abortion can be reduced at Atebubu. The research seeks to
determine the immediate effect of unsafe abortion on the economy, to recommend
interventions that will reduce unsafe abortion in the community, to identify factors that
influence teenage abortion among teenagers and to investigate the extent at which unsafe
abortion is practiced.
The target population for the research were teenagers of Atebubu who were currently
on admission at Atebubu District Hospital as a result of induced abortion. The sample size
was 20 and the study used questionnaire for data collection. However, the sampling technique
employed was convenience sampling. The analysis was based on descriptive statistics.
The study revealed that the immediate effect of unsafe abortion on the economy is
that it puts a heavier burden on the young to support the old and also lead to an decrease in
the Gross Domestic Product (GDP, unsafe abortion can be reduced through abstinence of
unprotected sex, providing public education and also counselling, factors responsible for
unsafe abortion were partner did not want to get pregnant, too young, financial difficulties
and pressure from family and friends and the absence of needed structures has resulted in
high prevalence of unsafe abortion at Atebubu. Based on the findings the following were
recommended: providing information and tools needed to control their fertility hence
decreasing induced abortions, using social media to create awareness on reproductive health

issues and granting access to medical abortion and safe, legal abortion services to the full
extent of the law in extreme cases by the government.
