a free member benefit in the form of SolidWorks Student Design KitEAA Maker Edition.

AIRVENTURE 2016 CHAPTER

GRAND CHAMPION!!!

The new benefit was announced Monday, July 25, by

EAA Chairman and CEO Jack J. Pelton with Suchit Jain
of SolidWorks and David Kasinskas of GSC.
The EAA Maker Edition of SolidWorks provides the ability to create fully detailed parts, assemblies, and drawings; the ability to generate complex surfaces, sheet metal
flat patterns, and structural welded assemblies; and will
include wizards to automate designs, check for interference, and perform simple stress and flow analysis.
Cirrus, MakerPlane, Rainbow Aviation, Sonex, Synergy,
and Zenith are among the aircraft designers using SolidWorks software.

It was a great honor for Chapter 237 being named the first
ever AirVenture (2016) Chapter Grand Champion at
the Chapter leadership breakfast! This award may have
started out as a fun way to get more members from other
chapters involved, but we took it seriously. Chapter 237
would like to believe that volunteering was also an important parameter!!
During AirVenture, and the week prior, Chapter 237
had 37 members volunteering in 13 areas and worked a
grand total of 1,296 hours!!! I am so proud, and lucky, to
be associated with such a great group of dedicated, motivated, talented, and the nicest people that truly do share
in the Spirit of Aviation!!
Chapter 237 will definitely be back next year to defend our
title with more of everything, including a cooler 237
(Cont. Page 6)
"bivouac"!

While the EAA Maker Edition license does not include technical support services, EAA members will
also receive guest membership to MySolidWorks,
which provides introductory lessons, (Cont. Page 7)

Ramblings from the Treasurer EAA Chapter 237

July, 2016
As I'm getting ready for AirVenture and making sure I don't forget something either personally needed
or something the Chapter needs hauled over I thought about all the other Chapter volunteers that contribute
their time, resources and expertise to EAA Chapter 237. We have a GREAT Chapter and a very busy Oshkosh
agenda. If you haven't signed up for any volunteer spots there, what are you waiting for?
As most members know we sold an RV-10 kit that was donated by some 3M employee's several years
ago netting us a good chunk of change! In the subsequent years we spent more than we should have but still
have a good reserve that would cover the costs of a new roof but that's about it. We depend entirely on donations to cover our operating expenses, including dues, hanger user donations, donations for food at our meetings and events, pedal planes, hydroplane, pancake breakfasts and events (DAD, GMAG, AOPA, YE rallies,
etc.) To give you an idea of our expenses covered by these donations, here are some of the larger ones:

Some pretty big numbers! Additionally our highest Gas/Electric bill last winter was $279 for ONE
month. Add in Name Tags, Printing, Air Academy (cost for giving kids this opportunity, we pay about half),
Hanger supplies( Trash bags, plates, plasticware, project hardware and tools), food for our events (PCB, Meetings, Movie Night, Builders Bash, Snacks and beverages in the hanger), AirVenture Campsites(4)and more add
a lot to our expenses.
When I became Treasurer in 2012 I got the Checkbook, some bank statements and a pile of receipts.
When I was able to piece together 2011's expenses it was apparent we were bleeding money and we had to liquidate one of three Certificates of Deposits to cover expenses. Since then we managed to cut expenses and with
our "donations" increasing, we have had a stable checkbook balance for the last few years.
I'm a bit concerned that is changing as our checking account balance is down about $1,000. Obviously
we want to minimize expenses such as making sure we cover the expense of the campsites at AirVenture, turn
the lights off and the thermostat down, and make a donation whenever we consume or use something that the
Chapter supplied. (Coffee for me! No Mark H, its not "free").
Hope this helps all of you understand a little more about Chapter 237's finances. If you think of anything we forgot already and need from the Hanger, let Kirk F, Curt S or me know!

Hope to see you all at AirVenture!

Mark Heule, EAA Chapter 237 Treasurer

August, 2016
AirVenture is now behind us and was absolutely inspiring! As Kirk has compiled volunteer hours, I'm
tasked with the money side. I think there was some misunderstanding about camping and wristbands.
The group that went out the week before got free camping through AirVenture. This got Chapter 237 8
campsites free and we paid for 4 additional campsites at a cost of $972 ( 4 sites for 9 days at $27/day). Wristbands were free for the early volunteers and we tried to use them wisely for any extra people to get in.
Bottom line is, if you camped with the chapter and were not one of the volunteers that went out a week
early, you owe the Chapter $25 for each night you were camping. So far I have received only $560 from various individuals. We operate on the honor system so if you camped, pay your fair share.
Mark Heule, EAA 237 Treasurer

(From Presidents Flight Deck Page 1)

Plans and ideas are already in the works. For 2017, we will be obtaining even more campsites and also be instituting a No Man/Woman/Child Left Behind for AirVenture policy. Chapter 237 will do whatever it takes to ensure
any member that normally could/would not come to AirVenture for various reasons (age, financial, mobility, lack
of camping equipment, etc.) will be able to attend, and possibly volunteer. AirVenture 2016 was one of the best
ever! Next year will be even betterand more fun!!

Way to go Chapter 237 members and family volunteers!

You did us all proud!!!

September 12th. Elected officials and local residents active on airport commissions
and advisory committees are invited to join the
aviation community for a night of reminiscing
and honoring. This event allows aviators and on
and off airport business employees to share stories about the airport. Each year an individual(s)
is recognized by MAC for their extraordinary
contribution in the promotion of the airport.

EAAs Berlin Express, Chapter 237s Restoration Project

AirVenture attendees had the chance to contribute to
an iconic part of aviation history by supporting the
restoration of EAAs B-25 Mitchell, The Berlin Express. The booth was manned by many of our chapter members.
Curt and the team installed the nose section just prior to the opening of AirVenture. There were long
days manning the booth by dedicated members.
Chapter 237 has the distinct privilege to help restore
the B-25 and to share our story during AirVenture.
Sixteen B-25s were launched from the USS Hornet
and bombed Tokyo during the Doolittle Raid.

It gave people this big boost of we can do this, we can band together and win this war, said Chris Henry, EAAs museum programs
representative. It was the first taste of victory for America.
EAAs B-25 played three roles in the aviation classic film, Catch 22,
starring as The Berlin Express, the generals airplane, and one of the
syndicates. In addition to the airplanes current restoration, EAA
will be returning its B-25 to the Berlin Express paint scheme it wore
in the film.
What makes the history of the B-25 even more special is that many
were built by Rosie the Riveter women and then transported by the
women of WASP from factories to bases.
During the war everybody
pulled together to do their part
to defeat the Axis, Henry
said. Even if you werent in
the military you were still
fighting the war in your own
way, whether it was in a factory, whether it was at home
with a victory garden, whether
it was war rations, anything
like that, everyone fought in World War II.
He said through volunteer work and the gathering of donations, the B-25 restoration project hopes to evoke the World War II spirit of people coming together to
reach a common goal.
This volunteer work is done by your fellow chapter members. Thanks to the
team, and if you would like to join them the chapter will be having future work
parties.

Gree ngs all,
I wanted to share a story with all of you today. On Saturday, my wife and I opted to explore 4R5, a.k.a. Madeline Island, just north of Ashland, WI, in Lake Superior. (A great day-trip that I highly recommend.) The people
there are very friendly and we were able to get a ride to town with a local couple we pped a round at Toms
Burned Down Caf (cola for me). A2er an enjoyable day, we grabbed a bite at Grampa Tonys Pizza before
searching for a ride back to the aireld. While enjoying our meal, I couldnt help overhearing the exuberant descrip ons of the Duluth Air Show and the camera drone opera ons from that mornings Point to La Pointe
Swim by the young boy of the family at the adjacent table.
Perfect trade! I thought to myself. I asked if the boy liked ying and airplanes. Of course, yes was the reply. I always carry Young Eagles forms in the plane. So I oered a lap around the island for the two kids if the
family would be kind enough to give us a li2. Instant deal! A2er giving the whole Y.E. story, the story of my
plane, and explaining you dont have to be rich to be a pilot (but it would help), the dad asked if he could also
ride along. I did the math, and since I was at half tanks, no problem. Id just need to clear out the cooler and
snacks. When I apologized for the mess on the oor from the kids Id own the day before, everything
stopped!
The mess was peanut shells, and the boy has a peanut allergy. Had I not casually indicated the mess was peanut shells, the unthinkable might have happened! I could have been up in unfamiliar airspace with unfamiliar
ci es, and unknown medical facili es when an in-ight anaphylaxis reac on occurred. The peanut debris, dust
from my vinyl and cloth seats, or even the mic foam on the headsets could have ini ated a life threatening reac on.
No harm caused, just a disappointed kid (who lives near my home eld, so well reschedule).
I will be cleaning my aircra2's interior soon and again before Y.E. Rallies. I also have a new No Peanuts in the
plane, car, and hangar policy. Fortunately, all is good...but the what ifs are unpleasant. What would have
been my 113th & 114th Young Eagles own might have been memorable for the wrong reason.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the following are the most common allergies in kids: milk, eggs, peanuts, soy,
wheat, tree nuts (i.e. walnuts and cashews), sh, and shellsh. All Young Eagle pilots must become more aware
of these allergies and ensure their planes are "clean". A "No Nuts" (including candy bars) policy should be
adopted, except for the big one in the le2 seat.
Regards,
Michael J. Grzincich
