BendingStressinBeams
Normalstressoccursinabendingbeam.Althoughitisanormalstress,theterm
bendingstressorflexuralstressisusedtoindicatethesourceoftheofthestress.The
lowersurfaceofthebeamexperiencetensilestress(whichcauseslengthening).The
uppersurfaceofthebeamexperiencescompressivestress(whichcausesshortening).
Thereisnostressalongahorizontalplanepassingthroughthecentroidofthecross

Bendingstressvarieswithlocation(depth)withinthebeam.Itiszeroattheneutral
axis,andincreaseslinearlywithdistancefromtheneutralaxis,aspredictedbythe
