ALERT
CONSULTING SERVICES DEPARTMENT
SUBJECT: SPECIFICATION CHANGE FOR
MATERIAL SELECTION FOR WET, SOUR
SERVICE

ALERT NO.
001/04

DATE:
04/28/04

SUMMARY:
The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) standard MR0175 Sulfide
Stress Cracking Resistant Metallic Materials for Oilfield Equipment is no longer a valid
industry standard and should not be referenced in Saudi Aramco documents. NACE
has stopped publishing or supporting MR0175, replacing it with a new international
standard MR0175/ISO 15156 Parts 1, 2, &3. This new ISO specification is a guideline
only and cannot be used in the same manner as MR0175 for equipment/material
procurement.
CSD will develop a new in-house specification to replace MR0175. The new
specification will mirror material requirements as given in the 2002 version of NACE
MR0175 and expand the scope to include material selection for wet, sour refinery
service. Once the new standard is completed, applicable Saudi Aramco SAES and
SAMSS documents referencing MR0175 can be editorially revised to reference the
new document.
Prior to issuing the new standard, any referral to NACE MR0175 should be made to
the 2002 version, not latest edition.
If you have any questions or inquiries regarding this alert please contact M. Al-Anezi
