Welcome to U.S. History!

In eighth grade social studies you will be studying United States history from the beginnings of the Revolutionary War
until the turn of the 20th century. We will investigate the U.S. culture, government, economy, and geography. Here are
my classroom policies that I expect to be followed to help class run smoothly:
*Rules and Consequences Springfield Middle expects students to follow the three Rs: Being Respectful, Being
Responsible, and Being Able to Resolve Issues and Problems. In each teachers room, there is a poster describing how these qualities
can be shown during class time and what the consequences will be if behavior problems occur. Ive copied them on the back of this
letter for you also. Please carefully read the tardy policy, which is described on the reverse side as well.
*Grades They will be based on a point system. Each assignment will be worth a total number of points. For example, a test may be
worth 100 points and a homework assignment may count for 25. I will add up how many points you have earned and divide it by how
many points were possible to determine your percentage. I do allow re-dos on most assignments for students who are willing to put in
extra time or effort to show an increased understanding of the skill or topic being assessed. These opportunities are allowed at my
discretion and must be accompanied by a written request from the student. Please use ParentVue and StudentVue to monitor
academic success during the marking period.
*Absent & Late Work It is your responsibility to make up any work that you miss. Check your assigned mailbox when you return
for any copies of work that needs to be completed and hand in those assignments within a week.
Your assignments, whether they are classwork or homework, are to be turned in on the day they are due. Late work will be accepted
for full credit if there is a reasonable explanation for why it could not be turned in on time. Students who frequently turn in
assignments past the deadline, without a good reason, may be required to make up work during lunch or after school in order to
receive full credit.
*Books & Supplies - Several textbook resources will be used in U.S. Studies I, so students may not be assigned a book to carry with
them. Students have the option of using an online version of the adopted text at home or a hard copy can be requested. Students are
expected to treat any books that they use with respect and will be responsible for returning borrowed items the next day. If there is
any damage to the book you were using or a borrowed text is lost, you may be charged up to $75.00 to replace it. Students need to
bring a pencil or pen and notebook paper to class on a daily basis. It would be very helpful for other supplies, such as markers,
colored pencils, rulers, and glue sticks, to be brought individually. These items are used frequently, but will be provided for students
who cannot bring them.
Parents If you have any questions or concerns, I may be reached by phone every afternoon from 2:30-3:30. My email address is
FaceLei@wcps.k12.md.us. I would love to have yours! If you need to meet in person, please call our guidance office to schedule an
appointment.
I hope to have a great year that is full of fun activities and lots of learning!

Mrs. Faces Three Rs

Respect
Responsibility

Be in your seat and ready to begin

assignments when the tardy bell rings.
Make sure materials are put away before
leaving.
Listen carefully when the teacher is speaking
in order to be successful, academically and
behaviorally.
Follow directions, when they are given, in a
timely manner.

Raise your hand and wait to be recognized.

Listen quietly when teacher is speaking.
Remain quiet during class when doing
individual work.
Respect the opinions of others.
Use appropriate language and tone.
Respect the schools property, keeping all
chair legs on the floor.

Resolve

Leave the drama at the door. This means that when class begins, you focus on your academic responsibilities
above all else.
Report issues with other students to the teacher before bigger problems arise.

Behavior Consequences
If you are found not following the Three Rs, the following disciplinary measures will be taken:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Verbal Warning
Seat Change
Student/Teacher Conference (Infraction Notice #1)
Parent Contact (Infraction Notice #2)
After-School Detention (Infraction Notice #3)
Office Referral (Infraction Notice #4)

Teachers reserve the right to bypass the consequence steps and write an office referral if the students behavior is such that
it disrupts the class and/or student learning.

Tardy Policy
Any student who comes to class after the tardy bell rings, for any reason, without an excused pass will be considered late.
Three unexcused tardies to my class will result in a half-hour after school detention. If a student receives two after-school
detentions because of unexcused tardies, they will be referred to the assistant principals office.
