ANSWERS TO COMMON RTEP QUESTIONS

Q. What is RTEP?
A. RTEP is the Ryerson Test of English Proficiency. The RTEP is designed to test reading
comprehension, listening comprehension and writing skills. Applicants required to show proof of
proficiency in English, who live in Ontario, are invited to write the RTEP after they apply for admission to
Ryerson.
Q. How much does the RTEP cost?
A. The RTEP fee is $125, subject to change. Payment can be made by cheque or money order. Cash
and other forms of payment will not be accepted.
Q. When can I write the RTEP?
A. You will receive a communication from Ryerson inviting you to sign up for the next available RTEP. It
is in your best interest to write the test as soon as possible, as your application is not considered
complete until you have met the English Proficiency requirements. Test dates will be posted
approximately 2 weeks in advance of the next available test on the EP website:
www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/english
Q. How do I prepare for the test?
A. We suggest the following types of preparation:

Ryerson offers both in-class preparatory English language courses

Read brief selections from university-level material
Listen to talks and lectures and practice taking down information
Write timed essays based on specific information
The CAEL (similar to the RTEP) test taker practice materials may be viewed at www.cael.ca

Q. How is the RTEP scored?

A. The RTEP is a Pass/ Fail examination and a numeric score is not published. The manner in which
pass-fail scores are determined varies from program to program. You will receive notification through your
Choose>Ryerson portal if you are not successful in the RTEP; otherwise, we will continue to assess your
application in accordance with the selection procedures for the program(s) of your choice. The RTEP is
simply a part of the assessment of your application. You will be notified of final decisions through your
Choose>Ryerson portal at choose.ryerson.ca.

Q. What happens after I have written the test?

A. Your application will continue to be assessed in accordance with the selection procedures for the
program(s) of your choice. The RTEP is simply a part of the assessment of your application. You will be
notified of final decisions through your Choose>Ryerson portal at choose.ryerson.ca.
Q. When will I receive my test results?
A. Test results are only acknowledged if you do not pass the test at the level required by the program(s)
you have applied for. The notice will state that your application has been cancelled for a given program as
a result of failing the RTEP.
Q. What happens if I fail the RTEP?
A. If you have been notified that you failed the RTEP, you may request to write the RTEP again by
completing and submitting the English Language Proficiency Test Reconsideration Request Form
Permission to re-write the RTEP is at the discretion of the English Proficiency Appeals Committee. You
will be notified of the Appeals Committees decision through your Choose>Ryerson portal.
Please be aware that applicants who fail the RTEP cannot subsequently use an alternate English
test result (i.e. TOEFL, MELAB, IELTS, CAEL) as a substitute, even if the score is acceptable. The
RTEP result always takes precedence over any other English test score.
