when Liz Millward presents her
book Making a Scene: Lesbian Community in Canada 1964 1984,
published last fall by UBC Press.
Making a Scene chronicles the
transformative years of the movement through interviews, diaries
and letters, surveying lesbian
spaces and actions from drop-in
centres to marches. Millward is
an associate professor of Womens and Gender Studies at the
University of Manitoba.

building awareness, fostering discussion and understanding our

timber procurement program from external sources. Working

the Veneer Plant management team, this individual will create

supply for the Veneer Plant operation. Duties will include:

It all began in 1956 with the first meeting. The following

founding members were present: Art Anderson, Howard
Anderson, Jim Seaton, Dr. G. Page, Alex Cumming, Dr.
Pat Fowler, John McLeod and E Archibald.
The Arrow Boat Club (as it was initially named until
1976) was located in Robson with docks and fuel facilities. Their mission, To promote interest in recreational
boating and boating safety, to protect the rights of boaters
and to improve local mooring facilities. Various fundraising activities helped the club to build and maintain their
docks. The club purchased 200 feet of waterfront, due to
the imminent construction of the dam, where they relocated from Robson to set up a marina and fuel dock at
their present location. Much work was done to build a
launch ramp, pilings, anchors and install booms.
The clubhouse was purchased in 1969 and it was moved
to its present location. During these years of relocating the
clubhouse and building again, a lot of work was done by
the volunteer efforts of the membership. As time passed, the
marina property and docks were sold to private interests.

In 2006 the club once again
built up their docks, organizing and expanding the
campground and began the
process of a land exchange
with the BC Government,
due to the very high fees
for leasing the campground.
The club sought to exchange
the campground land for
several acres which was ideally suited to sheep habitat.
This was successful after
many years of negotiations.
The club is presently working on extending the docks
into deeper water to ensure a
longer mooring season and the
clubhouse is being modernized
with a new roof and siding.
Throughout the years,
the Arrow Yacht Club has
been involved in promoting boating safety. Such as
being instrumental in the
establishing shore markers
(navigation aids) along areas
of the Columbia River and
Arrow Lake, promoting safe
mooring spots, campsites
and picnic areas. And in conjunction with the Ministry
of Environment, gathering
information on tagging fish
and boat safety inspections.
Arrow Yacht Club was
(and is) not all work! Social
activities have always been
on the annual calendar
dinners, cruises, commodores ball, parties, fishing
derbies, beach BBQs and
boat regattas. There have
been many social activities
throughout the years.
New members are always
welcome, come out and say
hello. Or join us on our 60th
anniversary celebration at the
Yacht Club, 5540 Broadwater
Road, Castlegar on Saturday,

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR INHERITANCE

IF YOU DIVORCE?
Lets say you get an inheritance.
Youre happily married, but you also
realize that not all marriages ultimately survive so what happens
to this inheritance if your marriage
breaks up?
Since March, 2013, under our new
family law rules for division of
property (and debts), family property
upon separation must generally be divided 50-50, no matter which spouse
owns it. But some things like property (say a fancy car) either of you
brought into the relationship and also
inheritances you receive while married are excluded property which
typically doesnt need to be split.
So what happens if you were to put
that inheritance, say a $500,000 gift,
into a bank account owned by your
spouse or its used toward buying a
house thats in your spouses name
only? Does it stay excluded and remain only your property? Or does it
become family property that must be
split? This question has been hotly
debated and led to differing results
in earlier cases. Our appeal court
has now recently dealt with it for the
first time.
Here, Peter (names changed) received a $2 million gift by way of
inheritance from a former employer.
The bulk of the money was used for

a house that was also placed in his
wife Helens name only (basically to
protect against potential future business claims Peter might face).
When their 10-year marriage broke
up, $2 million from that house sale
was set aside, with Peter saying this
money was still his and excluded
from division. Helen argued it belonged into the pot of family property.
The B.C. Court of Appeal agreed
with Helen. Theres an established
rule that if a husband simply transfers property outright to his wife
during the marriage (like putting
money in her bank account or a
house in her name), its presumed to
be a gift unless he can prove otherwise. Here (as often happens years
later, regarding what was intended
at the time), Peter couldnt prove or
persuade the court that he hadnt intended a gift to Helen. And like any
outright gift, you cant take it back
later even if the marriage breaks up.
The court pointed out Peter couldnt
have it both ways arguing thats
not my property, its my wifes had
there been business claims against
him, yet now saying it was his
property, not hers, after the marriage
break-up.
